"Cael?"
The child's voice came from beneath the throne.
Cael stopped breathing.
Everyone else stared into the newly revealed staircase.
But Cael knew that voice.
Not from High Keep.
Not from the Ashen Brotherhood.
From the years before he had learned to fight back.
From nights spent chained beneath Saint Orlan's.
A child's voice whispering through the wall of the cell beside his.
Cael lowered the broken remains of Kingsbane.
"No."
Toby moved beside him.
"Who is it?"
The voice came again.
"Cael... are you there?"
Cael's face had lost all color.
Gareth noticed.
"You know that child."
Cael nodded.
"His name was Finn."
"From the laboratory?"
"Yes."
Mira stepped closer.
"Was he another experiment?"
Cael did not answer immediately.
"He was my friend."
The words sounded more vulnerable than anything Toby had heard from him.
"What happened to him?"
Cael stared into the darkness.
"He died."
Naturally.
In this family, that answer no longer ended anything.
---
They descended.
Gareth went first.
Cael followed despite every attempt to stop him.
Toby stayed beside him.
Mira, Lyra, and Evelyn came next.
Seraphine followed with Veyron.
Edric remained above with Aldren to secure High Keep.
The staircase was older than the castle.
Older than the chambers where Azrath had been imprisoned.
Symbols covered the walls.
Not dragons.
Flames.
Five flames arranged around an empty circle.
Evelyn touched one.
"Five around one."
Toby looked at her.
"What does the middle mean?"
"I don't know."
Cael did.
Or feared he did.
"Six."
The others looked at him.
"The voice."
"Finn?" Gareth asked.
Cael nodded.
"He used to draw this."
His finger traced the empty circle.
"Five flames around a blank space."
"What did he say it meant?"
Cael swallowed.
"He called it home."
---
The staircase ended at a small chamber.
No ancient temple.
No magical prison.
A child's bedroom.
Toby stared.
A wooden bed stood against one wall.
A small table.
Broken toys.
Drawings covered the stones.
Cael entered slowly.
"I know this room."
Gareth looked around.
"You've been here?"
"No."
Cael touched the wooden horse on the table.
"But Finn described it."
Toby examined the drawings.
Most showed six children.
Five standing together.
One slightly apart.
In another drawing, the sixth child had no face.
Mira whispered:
"Who was Finn?"
A sound came from beneath the bed.
Everyone raised their weapons.
"Don't."
Cael crouched.
"Finn?"
A boy crawled out.
Perhaps eight years old.
Thin.
Pale.
White hair.
His eyes were ordinary brown.
No Sovereign Crest.
No black veins.
No obvious magic.
He looked at Cael.
Then smiled.
"You got old."
Cael's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Finn ran toward him.
Cael caught the boy instinctively.
For several seconds, he simply held him.
Toby saw his brother become someone else.
Not the angry survivor.
Not the Black Prince.
Just the child who had once needed a friend.
"I saw you die," Cael whispered.
Finn hugged him tighter.
"I know."
"How are you here?"
"I waited."
"For ten years?"
Finn pulled away.
"I don't know."
Gareth approached carefully.
"Finn."
The boy looked at him.
"Are you Cael's father?"
Gareth glanced at Cael.
"Apparently."
Finn smiled.
"He used to talk about you."
Cael froze.
"No, I didn't."
"You didn't know his name."
Finn looked toward Gareth.
"But you talked about what you'd do if you ever found your family."
Cael's face reddened.
Toby smiled.
"What did he say?"
"Nothing."
Finn ignored him.
"He said he'd punch his father first."
Gareth raised an eyebrow.
Cael sighed.
"I was eight."
"And then," Finn continued, "he said he'd ask why nobody came."
The humor disappeared.
Gareth looked at his son.
Cael looked away.
"I know why now."
Gareth stepped closer.
"Knowing doesn't make it hurt less."
Cael met his eyes.
"No."
Gareth put one hand on his shoulder.
"But I'm here."
Cael nodded.
"Yes."
Finn watched them.
Then whispered:
"That's why I called you."
Cael turned.
"What?"
Finn's expression became sad.
"Because I need you to leave."
---
The chamber doors slammed shut.
Veyron drew his sword.
Gareth moved toward Finn.
"What's happening?"
The boy backed away.
"I told him you wouldn't do it."
Cael stared.
"Told who?"
Finn began crying.
"The man under the room."
Everyone froze.
Toby looked down.
Another level.
Of course.
"What man?" Seraphine asked.
Finn shook his head.
"He doesn't have a name."
Evelyn's two marks suddenly ignited.
Her gold crest remained stable.
The place where the black crest had disappeared began burning again.
She screamed.
"Evelyn!"
Mira caught her.
"What do you feel?"
"Nothing."
"Nothing?"
Evelyn looked terrified.
"That's the problem."
Every supernatural presence they had encountered carried something.
Memory.
Fear.
Anger.
Grief.
The thing below carried none.
Lyra whispered:
"The empty circle."
Five flames around nothing.
Finn nodded.
"He calls himself the Hollow."
Gareth's hand tightened around his sword.
"What does he want?"
"The flames."
"Why?"
Finn looked at Toby.
"To turn them off."
Silence.
Cael frowned.
"Meaning?"
"No more Veil."
Toby stiffened.
"We already dealt with that."
Finn shook his head.
"No more Shades."
"That sounds good."
"No more magic."
Cael lowered his weapon slightly.
"Still sounds manageable."
Finn looked toward Gareth.
"No more memory after death."
The chamber became silent.
Evelyn understood first.
"No possibility of consciousness surviving."
Finn nodded.
"No ghosts."
Then Mira.
"No resurrection."
"Never."
Ancient threats would end.
No Nhalor.
No Shades.
No dead returning.
No Veil.
No children trapped beyond death.
Gareth asked:
"What's the price?"
Finn looked at the five siblings.
"The flames."
Toby touched his arm.
"Our marks?"
"More."
"What more?"
Finn began crying again.
"You."
Gareth stepped forward.
"No."
Finn looked at him helplessly.
"All five flames have to disappear."
Cael understood.
"Die."
Finn nodded.
"Together."
Gareth drew his sword.
"Then the Hollow can remain hollow."
The floor cracked.
A voice came from beneath them.
Calm.
Male.
Emotionless.
"You misunderstand."
The stone floor opened.
Not violently.
Perfectly.
A circular section descended.
Darkness waited below.
The voice continued.
"I do not require their deaths."
Gareth stared.
"Then what?"
"Their existence."
Toby frowned.
"What's the difference?"
"You will understand."
---
The lower chamber was white.
That disturbed Toby more than darkness would have.
No shadows.
No carvings.
No dust.
At its center sat a man.
Young.
Maybe twenty-five.
Plain gray clothing.
No crown.
No weapon.
His eyes were colorless.
He looked at the five siblings.
"Tobias."
Then Cael.
"Mira."
Lyra.
"Evelyn."
He knew them.
Gareth raised his sword.
"Name."
"I have none."
"Finn called you Hollow."
"A useful description."
"Are you human?"
"Once."
Seraphine stared.
"When?"
"Before Azrath."
Silence.
Aeron and Ancient Lyra had believed their era was the beginning.
It wasn't.
Toby whispered:
"How old are you?"
The Hollow looked at him.
"I do not know."
"What are you?"
"The first person who refused remembrance."
Cael frowned.
"That sounds unnecessarily mysterious."
The Hollow almost smiled.
"Death frightened my people."
"So?"
"We created rituals to preserve memory."
Toby understood.
"Before Azrath created the Veil."
"Long before."
"Did they work?"
"Yes."
The Hollow looked toward Evelyn.
"Too well."
Gareth asked:
"What happened?"
"The dead remained in the minds of the living until memory became indistinguishable from presence."
Nhalor before Nhalor.
"People stopped living," the Hollow continued. "They spent their lives maintaining the dead."
Mira whispered:
"So you stopped it."
"Yes."
"How?"
"I erased myself."
Silence.
Cael laughed once.
"What?"
"From memory."
"Everyone forgot you?"
"Eventually."
"Why?"
"Because remembrance itself had become the prison."
Toby looked toward Finn.
"Then why is he here?"
The Hollow's colorless eyes moved toward the child.
"Finn is not dead."
Cael froze.
"What?"
Finn lowered his head.
Cael crossed the room.
"What does he mean?"
"I'm sorry."
"You died."
"No."
"I watched them carry you away."
Finn began crying.
"They told you I died."
"Where were you?"
"Here."
"For ten years?"
Finn nodded.
"Why?"
The Hollow answered.
"Because Finn has no Vaelor blood."
Gareth frowned.
"Then why keep him?"
"Precisely because he has none."
Toby understood.
"A control."
Seraphine's face filled with disgust.
"The experiments."
Finn nodded.
"They wanted to know whether the marks could be transferred into ordinary children."
Cael looked sick.
"Did they hurt you?"
Finn did not answer.
That was answer enough.
Cael turned toward the Hollow.
"And you left him here?"
"I found him here."
"When?"
"After the laboratory abandoned this chamber."
"You could have freed him."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you?"
The Hollow looked at Finn.
"He asked me not to."
Cael stared at his friend.
"Why?"
Finn whispered:
"Because I knew you'd come back."
Cael's anger collapsed.
"Idiot."
Finn smiled through tears.
"You came."
Cael pulled him into another embrace.
This time he did not care who saw.
---
The Hollow rose.
"Your family has spent generations trying to solve the wrong problem."
Gareth looked at him.
"Which is?"
"You ask whether the dead should return."
He looked toward the five flames.
"The real question is why the living cannot let them leave."
Toby thought about Mercy.
The valley chanting.
One for all.
The Hollow continued.
"The Veil exists because grief seeks somewhere to go."
Evelyn asked:
"Then if we destroy the flames?"
"The supernatural boundary collapses into the natural one."
"Meaning?"
"When people die, they die."
No Shades.
No ghosts.
No magical memory.
No resurrection.
Toby looked at his siblings.
"And we survive?"
"Yes."
Gareth's suspicion sharpened.
"Then what's the cost?"
The Hollow looked toward the five flames.
"You lose every supernatural part of yourselves."
Cael shrugged.
"Fine."
"Every inherited memory."
Toby hesitated.
"Fine."
"Every connection to those who came before."
Mira nodded.
"Fine."
Evelyn asked:
"And me?"
The Hollow became silent.
There.
The real price.
Toby stepped forward.
"What happens to Evelyn?"
"Her body is sustained by the flame."
Gareth's face hardened.
"No."
Evelyn looked down at herself.
"If the flame disappears..."
"You disappear."
Silence.
Cael immediately said:
"Then no."
Mira agreed.
"No."
Lyra stepped beside Evelyn.
"No."
Toby did not speak.
Evelyn looked at him.
"Toby."
"No."
"Listen."
"No."
"You told everyone to let the dead be dead."
"You're alive."
"I was never born."
"You're alive now."
The Hollow watched silently.
Evelyn smiled sadly.
"Heavy."
Toby's eyes filled.
"You said you liked being heavy."
"I do."
"Then stay."
"Toby."
"Stay."
Evelyn touched his face.
"What if my staying means this keeps happening?"
"It doesn't."
"What if another Mercy appears?"
"We stop it."
"Another Nhalor?"
"We stop that too."
"Forever?"
"Yes."
Cael stepped beside him.
"He's unreasonable."
"Good."
"I support him."
Mira joined them.
"So do I."
Lyra took Evelyn's hand.
"You're not a key."
Gareth smiled.
"My children are learning."
The Hollow regarded them.
"You would preserve generations of danger for one person."
Gareth looked at him.
"Her name is Evelyn."
The Hollow's expression changed.
Very slightly.
Perhaps he remembered what it meant to have a name.
---
A bell rang above.
Veyron looked toward the ceiling.
"High Keep."
Another bell.
Then another.
Alarm.
They rushed upstairs.
A soldier met them halfway.
"Sir Gareth!"
"What happened?"
"The king."
"Aldren?"
"Yes."
"What?"
"He's gone."
Edric appeared behind the soldier.
His face was devastated.
Gareth understood.
Aldren had been dying.
"How?"
Edric shook his head.
"Not dead."
"What?"
"Gone."
"Explain."
Edric held out a piece of parchment.
"He left this."
Gareth read.
Do not follow me.
The Five Flames must not be sacrificed.
There is another way.
I should have told you years ago.
The answer is where our family began.
Below was a map.
Not of High Keep.
Of the northern mountains.
One location had been marked.
Seraphine stared.
"The Valley of Kings."
Edric shook his head.
"No."
He pointed toward a smaller symbol beyond it.
"Farther north."
Gareth read the ancient name.
"The First Keep."
The Hollow appeared behind them.
For the first time, genuine emotion entered his colorless eyes.
Fear.
Toby noticed.
"You know that place."
The Hollow said nothing.
Cael smiled grimly.
"Good. We're going."
"No."
Everyone turned.
The Hollow's calm had vanished.
"You cannot go there."
Gareth folded the map.
"Why?"
"Because High Keep was not the first prison."
Silence.
Toby looked toward the northern mark.
"What was?"
The Hollow stared at him.
"The First Keep."
"What did it imprison?"
The Hollow's face became pale.
"Me."
Nobody spoke.
Then Finn whispered:
"He doesn't want you to know."
Cael looked at his friend.
"Know what?"
Finn stared at the Hollow.
"Why everyone forgot him."
The Hollow moved.
Gareth raised his sword.
Too late.
The Hollow seized Finn.
"NO!" Cael shouted.
White light filled the corridor.
When it vanished, both were gone.
Only Finn's wooden horse remained on the floor.
Cael picked it up.
His hands shook.
Toby touched his shoulder.
"We'll get him back."
Cael stared toward the northern mountains.
His expression hardened into something Toby recognized.
Not rage.
Purpose.
"He waited ten years for me."
Cael closed his fist around the toy.
"I'm not making him wait another day."
Outside High Keep, thunder rolled across a clear sky.
Far to the north, King Aldren stood before a fortress no map had shown for a thousand years.
The First Keep.
Its gates were already open.
Inside, five enormous stone coffins surrounded an empty sixth tomb.
Aldren stepped closer.
Words were carved across it:
HERE LIES THE MAN WHO TAUGHT DEATH TO REMEMBER.
Behind him, someone whispered:
"You came back."
Aldren turned.
His face filled with horror.
Because standing inside the forgotten fortress was Queen Maeryn.
Not a ghost.
Not a Shade.
Alive.
She looked exactly as she had sixty years ago.
And in her hands she held a crown made entirely of human bone.
"Hello, son."
Queen Maeryn smiled.
"It's time you learned why I erased the Hollow from history."
