Chapter 23 - When the Dead Came Home

The dead did not attack High Keep.

They asked to be let inside.

That was worse.

Thousands of living people crowded the valley beneath the walls, while among them stood husbands who had been buried years earlier, children whose graves still held their names, soldiers killed in forgotten wars, and mothers whose families had already learned how to survive without them.

At the center stood six-year-old Elowen.

Her eyes were completely black.

"Five flames," she said.

Every resurrected mouth repeated her words.

"Open the door."

Toby's Sovereign Crest burned.

Beside him, Cael's answered.

Then Mira's.

Lyra's.

Finally Evelyn's two marks—gold and black—ignited simultaneously.

Gareth grabbed Toby.

"Back from the wall."

Toby didn't move.

Queen Elara stood below.

Edric's mother.

Dead for ten years.

Beside her was Lucian.

Gareth's father.

Brother Caldus.

Rellan.

Hundreds more.

Gareth himself had gone pale.

Toby looked up.

"You see him."

"Yes."

"Lucian."

"Yes."

"Do you think it's really him?"

Gareth's jaw tightened.

"That question is exactly what whoever did this wants me to ask."

Below, Lucian lifted his face.

"Gareth!"

Gareth stopped breathing.

The voice was right.

Not close.

Not an imitation.

Right.

"My son!"

Toby saw Gareth's hand tremble.

Lucian smiled.

"You called me Father before I fell."

Gareth closed his eyes.

Only the real Lucian should have known how much that moment mattered.

Then Lucian said:

"Call me that again."

Gareth took one step toward the stairs.

Toby grabbed him.

"Father."

Gareth stopped.

Now two voices were calling him by the same bond.

One from life.

One from death.

He looked at Toby.

The boy shook his head.

"Don't."

Gareth slowly stepped back.

Below, Lucian's smile disappeared.

Every resurrected person turned toward Toby simultaneously.

"Selfish child."

Gareth's grief vanished beneath fury.

"That's not my father."

---

Edric was having more difficulty.

Queen Elara stood directly beneath the gate.

"My son."

Edric gripped the stone parapet.

Thane stood beside him.

"Your Highness."

"Don't."

"You cannot go down."

"I know."

"Then step away."

"I said I know."

Elara lifted both hands.

"I was wrong."

Edric froze.

The queen began crying.

"I was wrong about the twins."

Toby looked toward her.

"I was afraid."

She continued.

"I convinced myself that killing children was necessary because I was too frightened to search for another answer."

Edric's eyes filled.

Those were exactly the words he had always wanted his mother to say.

Ancient Lyra whispered:

"That's how it gets you."

Edric looked at her.

"The dead return with the apology you needed."

Aeron nodded.

"Or the forgiveness."

Cael looked toward the crowd.

"Or the person you wanted."

Ancient Lyra's expression darkened.

"Whatever makes you open the door."

Mira whispered:

"But some of them could still be real."

Nobody answered.

That was the cruelty.

Perhaps they were.

---

Inside the council chamber, the family argued.

Edric wanted the gates kept closed.

Gareth agreed.

King Aldren wanted to understand the phenomenon before making any irreversible decision.

Aeron wanted the resurrected destroyed before they multiplied.

Toby hated that plan.

"They could be people."

"They could be memories wearing people," Aeron replied.

"That's what everyone said about Evelyn."

Evelyn sat silently near the window.

Aeron looked toward her.

"She is different."

"How?"

"She has independent memory."

"So do they."

"Do they?"

Toby stopped.

Aeron continued.

"Every dead person outside is behaving exactly as the living remember them."

Mira understood.

"No contradictions."

"Correct."

"Real people contradict expectations."

Cael looked toward the window.

"That's depressing."

"It's also useful."

Toby frowned.

"So we test them."

Gareth immediately said, "No one goes outside."

"We don't have to."

Toby looked at Veyron.

"Bring one to the gate."

---

They chose Rellan.

The dead knight who had attacked Gareth in the southern tower.

The man Gareth had killed before realizing Rellan was trying to protect Toby from the black serpent.

Rellan stood outside the closed iron gate.

Gareth faced him through the bars.

"You remember me."

Rellan smiled.

"You stabbed me."

"Technically accurate."

"You always were terrible at apologies."

Gareth's expression tightened.

"What did you say before you died?"

Rellan answered:

"That the massacre wasn't a coup."

"What was it?"

"A containment."

Correct.

Toby watched carefully.

Gareth asked another question.

"Why did you attack Toby?"

"I didn't."

"What did you do?"

"Reached past him for the serpent."

Correct again.

Cael muttered, "He remembers."

Toby wasn't convinced.

"Ask something you didn't know."

Gareth looked at him.

"What?"

"If he's built from your memory, ask something you never learned."

Gareth understood.

He turned toward Rellan.

"Who ordered you to the southern tower?"

Rellan smiled.

"Captain Veyron."

Gareth already knew that.

"Why?"

Rellan's smile weakened.

"To protect the boy."

"Still known."

Gareth stepped closer.

"Who were your parents?"

Rellan stared.

"I..."

"Names."

Silence.

"What village were you born in?"

Rellan's face twitched.

"I don't..."

"Who taught you to use a sword?"

No answer.

His skin began trembling.

Gareth's voice hardened.

"You don't know."

Rellan's eyes turned black.

"Those details don't matter."

Toby whispered:

"They mattered to Rellan."

The creature behind the gate screamed.

Its face split into smoke.

Veyron struck it with a golden-marked dagger Ancient Lyra had prepared.

The body collapsed.

Empty.

Toby looked away.

Aeron had been right.

Not Rellan.

A reconstruction.

Made from memory.

---

A roar rose from the valley.

The crowd had seen the body fall.

The living began shouting.

"MURDERERS!"

"They killed him!"

"Open the gates!"

A mother screamed toward the walls.

"My daughter is down there!"

A man held the hand of a resurrected woman.

"My wife came back!"

The emotional pressure became more dangerous than an army.

Edric looked across the battlements.

"If we tell them the dead aren't real, they won't believe us."

Cael answered:

"Because some don't want to."

Toby stared at the families below.

Could he blame them?

If Gareth died and returned tomorrow, would Toby ask questions before embracing him?

He already knew the answer.

That frightened him.

---

That evening, Evelyn collapsed.

All five flames rushed to her.

Her black crest was spreading.

Mira knelt beside her.

"Evelyn!"

"I'm here."

"What happened?"

"The door."

Ancient Lyra approached.

"What door?"

Evelyn looked toward the valley.

"They're building it."

"Who?"

"The living."

Silence.

Aeron closed his eyes.

"Belief."

Evelyn nodded.

"Every person who believes the dead have returned is giving the boundary shape."

Toby frowned.

"I thought belief made Nhalor stronger."

"It did."

"But Nhalor is gone."

"No."

Evelyn grabbed his hand.

"Not Nhalor."

"Then what?"

"The idea behind him."

Ancient Lyra understood.

"Death can be reversed."

Evelyn nodded.

"If enough people believe that..."

"The world accepts it."

Gareth stared.

"How do you fight an idea?"

Nobody answered.

Then Cael said:

"With another one."

Everyone looked at him.

He seemed annoyed by the attention.

"What?"

Toby smiled.

"That was intelligent."

"I regret speaking."

Toby turned toward Ancient Lyra.

"If belief can weaken the boundary, can belief strengthen it?"

She considered.

"Possibly."

"Then we tell everyone the truth."

Edric shook his head.

"They won't accept it."

"Not from us."

Toby looked toward the resurrected procession.

"But maybe from the dead."

---

They captured three more resurrected people.

Each failed the same test.

They possessed memories known by the living.

Nothing independent.

No private histories outside what surviving people remembered.

Then they brought Queen Elara.

Edric insisted.

She stood beyond the gate.

"My son."

Edric's face trembled.

"Mother."

"Please."

He closed his eyes.

Then asked:

"What did you do the morning before the massacre?"

Elara smiled.

"I attended council."

Edric shook his head.

"No."

Her smile faded.

"You canceled council."

Silence.

"You disappeared for six hours."

Elara stared.

"I never learned where you went."

The dead queen's face twitched.

Edric stepped closer.

"So tell me."

"I..."

"Where were you?"

"I don't remember."

"Because I don't remember."

Her eyes turned black.

Edric began crying.

The thing wearing his mother screamed.

But Edric did not retreat.

"You are not her."

"EDRIC!"

"You have her face."

The creature slammed itself against the gate.

"You have my memories of her."

"SON!"

"But my mother had memories that belonged only to herself."

The creature dissolved.

Edric remained standing.

Broken.

But standing.

Then he turned toward the valley.

Thousands had watched.

He raised his voice.

"THEY ARE NOT OUR DEAD!"

The crowd quieted.

Edric pointed toward the empty body.

"They are our grief given faces!"

Some listened.

Others screamed.

A man shouted:

"Liar!"

Another:

"You want the throne!"

Then a child's voice:

"My father knows my name!"

Toby's heart broke.

Edric continued.

"Your memories are real. Your love is real. But those things are not the people you lost!"

The crowd divided.

Some began pulling away from the resurrected.

Others held them tighter.

And as doubt spread, several dead bodies flickered.

Ancient Lyra whispered:

"It's working."

Then Elowen stepped forward.

The six-year-old girl looked up at the wall.

"Very clever."

Cassian appeared beside Aldren.

His apparition had weakened but remained.

"Elowen."

She looked at him.

"Brother."

"You're not her."

Elowen smiled.

"No."

Cassian's face filled with grief.

"Then what are you?"

The child's body changed.

Older.

Younger.

Male.

Female.

Thousands of faces.

Then Elowen again.

"I am what they asked for."

Toby frowned.

"Who?"

The entity spread its arms toward the crowd.

"Them."

Silence.

"Every prayer whispered beside a grave."

Its voice became thousands.

"Every promise that death could not be the end."

Every resurrected person turned toward High Keep.

"I am the answer."

Aeron whispered:

"It's not Nhalor."

Ancient Lyra looked terrified.

"No."

"What is it?"

"Something new."

Human grief had created another collective.

Not an ancient monster.

A newborn one.

The entity smiled.

"You may call me Mercy."

Cael raised Kingsbane.

"That's manipulative."

Mercy laughed.

"Names usually are."

Then every resurrected body knelt.

The living crowd gasped.

Mercy looked toward the five flames.

"You fear me because you think I want to destroy death."

Toby stared.

"Don't you?"

"No."

"What do you want?"

"Choice."

The word moved through the valley.

"No one should die unless they choose to remain dead."

For a heartbeat, even Toby felt the temptation.

No stolen children.

No parents lost too soon.

No final goodbye.

Gareth could have Lucian.

Edric could have Elara.

Cassian could have Elowen.

Everyone could choose.

Then Ancient Lyra whispered:

"Ask the price."

Toby looked at Mercy.

"What does it cost?"

Mercy's smile remained.

"Only one life."

Silence.

Cael frowned.

"Whose?"

Mercy lifted one small hand.

Pointed toward High Keep.

Toward the five flames.

Then directly at Evelyn.

"Hers."

Toby immediately stepped in front of his sister.

"No."

Mercy smiled.

"Of course you say that."

"Why Evelyn?"

"She is neither fully living nor fully dead."

Aeron understood.

"She can anchor both sides."

"Yes."

Evelyn went pale.

Mercy continued:

"Give me the child who was never born, and death becomes a door instead of a wall."

Thousands of living people heard.

The valley erupted.

Some screamed no.

Others—

far too many—

began chanting.

"ONE FOR ALL!"

Gareth's face became murderous.

The chant grew.

"ONE FOR ALL!"

Evelyn backed away from the wall.

"ONE FOR ALL!"

Toby grabbed her hand.

Cael took the other.

Mira and Lyra surrounded her.

Five siblings.

One family.

Below, thousands demanded a sacrifice.

Mercy smiled.

"See?"

The chanting shook High Keep.

"Your living are making the choice for you."

Then a new voice rose from inside the castle.

"Perhaps they should."

Everyone turned.

King Aldren stood behind them.

Edric stared.

"Father?"

Aldren looked at Evelyn.

His face was filled with unbearable sorrow.

"One life..."

Gareth stepped between them.

"Careful."

Aldren continued.

"...for every person who has ever died."

Evelyn stared at him.

"You would give me to them?"

Aldren closed his eyes.

"I don't know."

That answer was worse than yes.

Toby looked around.

At the king.

At the crowd.

At the dead.

At his family.

Something changed in his expression.

"No."

Mercy smiled.

"You've already answered."

"No."

Toby climbed onto the battlement.

Gareth grabbed him.

"What are you doing?"

"Making them choose again."

Toby looked toward the valley.

Then shouted:

"YOU WANT ONE LIFE FOR ALL?"

The crowd quieted.

Mercy watched.

Toby pulled Evelyn beside him.

"This is the life!"

Evelyn stared.

"Toby..."

He pointed toward her.

"She has a name!"

Silence.

"EVELYN!"

His voice echoed across the valley.

"She's my sister!"

Cael climbed beside him.

"So if you want her dead..."

His expression was cold.

"...look at her first."

Mira joined them.

Then Lyra.

Evelyn stood between her siblings.

Toby shouted:

"Say her name before you ask her to die!"

No one spoke.

A woman in the crowd lowered her head.

Then another.

Someone whispered:

"Evelyn."

The chant did not resume.

Mercy's smile vanished.

Toby understood.

"That's why you wanted her to stay a key."

Mercy stared.

"A sacrifice."

Toby continued.

"Not a person."

The entity's face twisted.

"You think names change necessity?"

"Yes."

The five flames ignited.

Mercy screamed.

The resurrected bodies began flickering.

The living crowd backed away.

Toby shouted:

"REMEMBER YOUR DEAD!"

Mercy smiled again.

That was what it wanted.

But Toby finished:

"AND LET THEM BE DEAD!"

The words struck the valley like thunder.

Mercy froze.

One by one, people began crying.

A man released the hand of the thing wearing his wife.

A mother kissed the forehead of the child she had lost.

Then stepped away.

A soldier saluted his dead commander.

A woman whispered goodbye to her father.

Every act weakened Mercy.

The resurrected began dissolving into light.

Not screaming.

Not fighting.

Simply fading.

Lucian appeared one last time below Gareth.

This time he did not ask to return.

He smiled.

Gareth whispered:

"Father."

Lucian nodded.

Then vanished.

Edric saw Elara.

She smiled.

No apology.

No plea.

Just the memory of his mother.

He bowed his head.

"Goodbye."

She disappeared.

Cassian turned toward the image of Elowen.

The false girl was fading.

He whispered:

"I remember you."

Then both were gone.

Mercy screamed.

"No!"

Its body cracked.

The five flames burned brighter.

"You need them to refuse grief," Toby said.

Mercy collapsed.

"You need them to believe love means holding on forever."

The entity looked at him with hatred.

"What does a child know about death?"

Toby's eyes filled.

"Enough."

Mercy's body shattered into white light.

The valley fell silent.

Thousands cried.

But no one chanted.

The dead were dead again.

The boundary held.

For now.

Then Evelyn gasped.

Toby turned.

Her black crest had disappeared.

Only gold remained.

She smiled.

"I feel..."

"What?"

"Alive."

Gareth approached.

"Is that good?"

She laughed.

"Heavy."

Toby remembered.

She had said the same thing when she first entered High Keep.

Heavy.

Alive.

Real.

Then Ancient Lyra suddenly collapsed.

Aeron caught her.

"Lyra!"

Her body had become translucent.

She looked at her hands.

"No."

Toby ran toward her.

"What's happening?"

Aeron already knew.

"The dead are leaving."

Ancient Lyra smiled sadly.

"So am I."

Toby shook his head.

"No."

"You just taught an entire kingdom to let us go."

"But you're different."

She touched his face.

"Everyone says that when goodbye becomes difficult."

Toby began crying.

Ancient Lyra looked toward her brother.

Aeron's body was fading too.

He smiled.

"Together this time?"

She took his hand.

"Together."

The original twins looked at their descendants.

Cael.

Toby.

Mira.

Lyra.

Evelyn.

Five flames.

Ancient Lyra whispered:

"Do better than we did."

Then she and Aeron dissolved into golden light.

The wind carried it over High Keep.

Toby watched until the last spark vanished.

For the first time in three thousand years, no ancient voice remained to tell them what they were supposed to become.

Then Kingsbane cracked.

Cael looked down.

A fracture ran along the black blade.

Once.

Twice.

The sword shattered.

Inside the broken hilt was a rolled piece of parchment.

Everyone stared.

Gareth picked it up.

"Apparently even the sword had a secret."

Cael sighed.

"Of course."

Gareth unrolled the parchment.

Ancient writing covered it.

King Aldren approached.

His face changed as he read.

"What?"

Toby asked.

Aldren looked toward the five siblings.

"This isn't a prophecy."

"What is it?"

"A warning."

Gareth read the final line aloud.

When the dead are released and the Five Flames remain, the oldest throne shall fall.

Edric looked toward High Keep.

"The throne?"

A deep crack echoed through the castle.

Everyone turned.

The royal throne chamber split down the center.

The ancient stone throne collapsed.

Beneath it, hidden for centuries, was a staircase.

Descending.

Cael stared into the darkness.

"Please tell me we're not going down there."

From below came a child's voice.

"Cael?"

He
