# Chapter 17 - The Master of the Broken Stars

The figure wearing the crown of broken stars reached through the golden doorway, and every living soul in High Valen heard its own heartbeat stop.

For one impossible instant, the kingdom fell silent.

No wind moved through the streets. No bells rang above the castle. Even the flames burning in the ruined seventh chamber froze in place.

Inside the memory realm, Toby stared at the enormous shadow standing beyond the doorway.

Seven golden chains hung from its wrists, each disappearing into a different darkness.

Its silver eyes were larger than castle windows.

And when it spoke, the sound seemed to come from inside Toby's bones.

"The First Flame has returned to its rightful master."

Aurelith fell to her knees.

"No."

The figure lowered its head.

"Do you still deny me, daughter?"

Toby turned sharply.

"Daughter?"

Aurelith's face had gone white.

Liora stood motionless beside her.

Kael instinctively moved in front of Toby, while Lyra gripped his hand.

Eryon backed away from the doorway.

For the first time since recovering his name, the Devourer looked less like a monster than a terrified child.

Toby noticed.

"You know him."

Eryon's lips trembled.

"He was there when I was created."

The enormous figure smiled.

"Of course I was."

Aurelith struggled to stand.

"Leave them alone, Vaelthar."

The name sent a tremor through the crystal city.

The figure's silver eyes brightened.

"At last. Someone remembers."

Toby tightened his grip on the Sunforged Arc, which had appeared beside him as the golden doorway opened.

"Who are you?"

The shadow extended one chained hand.

"I am Vaelthar, Keeper of the First Covenant, the one who existed before your precious realms were divided."

Toby stared.

"And what do you want?"

Vaelthar's smile widened.

"What has always belonged to me."

He pointed toward the golden flame burning beneath Toby's skin.

"That."

In the ruined chamber beneath High Valen, Queen Elara felt her son's body grow cold.

"Tobias?"

She pressed her hand against his cheek.

His skin had lost its warmth.

The golden thread connecting them was fading.

King Aldric reached for his son's wrist.

No pulse.

For one horrifying moment, the king could not breathe.

"No."

Elara looked up.

"What?"

Aldric pressed two fingers against Toby's neck.

His expression changed.

"His heart has stopped."

Elara screamed.

She pulled the boy against her chest.

"No! Tobias, wake up!"

Seraphine rushed forward.

Cassian knelt beside Aldric.

"Can the Phoenix bring him back?"

The king looked toward the shattered silver box.

Only ashes remained.

Claudia's sacrifice had opened the path between the memory realm and the physical world.

But the Phoenix feather was gone.

Aldric began chest compressions.

Elara watched helplessly.

For eleven years, she had dreamed of holding her son again.

Now she was holding him while his life slipped away.

"Please," she whispered. "Not again."

Aurelith's physical form flickered beside them.

Her consciousness was still trapped inside the memory realm.

The Guardian's voice emerged faintly.

"His body is waiting."

Aldric looked up.

"For what?"

Aurelith's expression twisted.

"For the First Flame to choose whether it will return."

Inside the memory realm, Vaelthar descended toward the broken crystal streets.

Each step caused the golden rings above the city to fracture further.

Toby raised his bow.

"Stay back."

The ancient being looked amused.

"You threaten me with a weapon forged from my own fire?"

Toby hesitated.

Vaelthar continued.

"Who do you think gave the First Flame its power?"

Aurelith stepped forward.

"Do not listen to him."

Vaelthar laughed.

"Still protecting your lies?"

He raised one hand.

A vast image appeared above the city.

Toby saw a world without borders.

No separate realms.

No gates.

No seven seals.

Only an endless ocean of stars, where living beings moved freely between light and darkness.

At its center stood a throne made of silver fire.

Vaelthar sat upon it.

Beside him stood a younger Aurelith.

Toby stared.

"Is that real?"

Aurelith lowered her eyes.

"Yes."

Vaelthar smiled.

"Before the First Flame became a guardian, it was the heart of my kingdom."

The image changed.

Aurelith stood before the throne, holding a small sphere of golden light.

Vaelthar extended his hand.

She refused.

The scene erupted into violence.

Golden fire swept across the stars.

Seven enormous boundaries rose between the worlds.

Vaelthar was dragged backward by chains of sunlight.

Toby watched in astonishment.

"You imprisoned him."

Aurelith nodded.

Vaelthar's expression hardened.

"She stole my creation."

The Guardian turned toward Toby.

"The First Flame was never meant to belong to anyone."

"Yet you took it," Vaelthar replied.

"I freed it."

"You shattered the world."

"I separated the realms to protect them from you!"

Vaelthar laughed.

"From me? Or from the truth?"

Toby looked between them.

"What truth?"

The ancient being leaned closer.

"The First Flame was created to preserve balance. Life and death. Joy and sorrow. Creation and destruction."

He pointed toward Eryon.

"Your Guardian could not accept that balance."

Eryon recoiled.

Vaelthar continued.

"She wanted a world without suffering."

Aurelith's face tightened.

"And you wanted a world where suffering was useful."

"Everything has its purpose."

"Not cruelty."

Vaelthar's silver eyes darkened.

"Cruelty is merely power exercised without permission."

Toby stared at him.

"That's not true."

The ancient being looked down.

"Oh?"

Toby swallowed.

"People aren't things you can use."

Vaelthar smiled.

"And yet your family has spent eleven years proving otherwise."

The words struck Toby painfully.

He thought of the seventh seal.

His father's bargain.

His mother's fear.

Kael's stolen childhood.

Seraphine's betrayal.

Claudia's cruelty.

Every terrible decision made in the name of protecting someone.

But he also remembered what those people had done afterward.

They had admitted their mistakes.

They had tried to change.

Some had even sacrificed everything.

Toby raised his head.

"People can be wrong."

Vaelthar tilted his head.

"And?"

"They can also choose to become better."

For the first time, the ancient being's smile faded.

Kael watched Toby with growing concern.

The boy's golden flame was becoming unstable.

Each time Vaelthar spoke, another crack appeared across the light surrounding him.

Lyra noticed too.

"Kael."

He turned.

"What?"

"The doorway."

She pointed toward the golden path Claudia had opened.

It was narrowing.

Beyond it, they could see the ruined chamber beneath High Valen.

Elara held Toby's motionless body.

Aldric was desperately trying to revive him.

Kael went pale.

"Toby's dying."

Lyra nodded.

"We have to get him back."

Kael looked toward Vaelthar.

The ancient being was watching Toby with unmistakable hunger.

"Then we need to distract him."

Lyra tightened her grip on his hand.

"Together."

Kael looked at her.

For a brief moment, the chaos around them seemed to fade.

He remembered their years working together.

Her quiet loyalty.

Her courage.

The way she had refused to abandon him even when he was consumed by darkness.

"I never told you something," he whispered.

Lyra stared.

"Kael, this is a terrible time."

He smiled faintly.

"I know."

"Then save it."

He looked toward the collapsing doorway.

"I might not get another chance."

Her expression softened.

Kael took a breath.

"I love you."

Lyra froze.

For a moment, she seemed unable to speak.

Then tears filled her eyes.

"You idiot."

He blinked.

"What?"

She laughed through her tears.

"I've been waiting three years for you to say that."

Kael stared.

Then smiled.

Lyra stepped closer.

"I love you too."

For one brief heartbeat, they embraced.

Then the crystal city shook.

Vaelthar raised his hand.

"Enough."

A wave of silver fire swept toward them.

Kael pushed Lyra behind him.

The black crown mark on his wrist ignited.

He raised both hands.

A shield of silver light appeared.

The attack struck.

Kael screamed.

But the shield held.

Vaelthar stopped.

His expression changed.

"The second vessel."

Kael gritted his teeth.

"Not anymore."

Vaelthar studied the silver mark.

"Interesting. Malachar's corruption has been transformed."

Kael looked toward Toby.

The boy was staring at him.

"Kael!"

"Get to the doorway!"

Toby hesitated.

"What about you?"

Kael smiled grimly.

"Someone has to keep the old monster busy."

Aurelith approached Eryon.

The former Devourer stood apart from the others, staring at the enormous figure who had helped create him.

"He's going to take the Flame," Eryon whispered.

Aurelith nodded.

"Yes."

"And then?"

"The boundaries will collapse."

Eryon looked toward Toby.

"Will the boy die?"

Aurelith hesitated.

"Probably."

The answer seemed to wound Eryon.

He lowered his eyes.

For centuries, he had consumed suffering without understanding compassion.

Now, for the first time, he feared losing someone other than himself.

"Toby gave me my name."

Aurelith looked at him.

"I know."

"He didn't have to."

"No."

"He knew what I had done."

Aurelith lowered her head.

"Yes."

Eryon stared at his hands.

"Why would he help me?"

The Guardian's eyes filled with tears.

"Because he believes you can become more than what I made you."

Eryon looked up.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then he whispered, "Do you?"

Aurelith's expression broke.

She knelt before him.

For the first time in four hundred years, she looked directly into the eyes of the being she had created and abandoned.

"Yes."

Eryon began to cry.

Aurelith reached toward him.

He flinched.

She stopped.

"I'm sorry."

The words were simple.

But they carried centuries of guilt.

Eryon stared.

"You hurt me."

"I know."

"You left me alone."

"I know."

"You made me believe I was only suffering."

Aurelith's tears fell.

"I was wrong."

Eryon looked toward Toby.

Then toward Vaelthar.

For the first time, he understood what the boy had meant.

A name was not enough.

A choice had to follow.

Eryon slowly raised his head.

"Then let me choose what I become."

Vaelthar extended his hand toward Toby.

The golden flame beneath the boy's skin began pulling away from him.

Toby screamed.

A thread of light emerged from his chest.

Vaelthar smiled.

"At last."

The First Flame floated between them.

Toby collapsed to his knees.

His vision blurred.

He could hear his mother's voice from the other side of the doorway.

Tobias, come back.

He tried to stand.

But his body felt empty.

Vaelthar closed his fingers around the flame.

The crystal city began to collapse.

The golden rings shattered.

The sky turned silver.

Aurelith screamed.

"No!"

Vaelthar raised the First Flame above his head.

"THE COVENANT IS RESTORED!"

Seven enormous chains appeared across the heavens.

They stretched toward the boundaries between worlds.

One by one, the ancient seals began to break.

Toby looked up.

He saw High Valen.

The Hollow Realm.

The crystal city.

And countless other worlds appearing beyond the collapsing sky.

All moving toward one another.

Vaelthar laughed.

"Everything will return to its rightful place."

Then Eryon stepped forward.

"No."

The ancient being turned.

"What?"

Eryon raised his hands.

Darkness gathered around him.

But this time, it did not consume.

It formed a shield around Toby.

Vaelthar stared.

"You were created to absorb suffering."

Eryon nodded.

"Yes."

"Then obey your purpose."

The former Devourer looked toward Toby.

The boy was barely conscious.

Yet he managed a faint smile.

Eryon turned back.

"No."

Vaelthar's expression hardened.

"You cannot defy your nature."

Eryon raised his head.

"Watch me."

He opened his hands.

Every memory of suffering he had carried for centuries emerged as a vast river of light and darkness.

But instead of releasing it into the worlds, he drew it into himself.

Aurelith screamed.

"Eryon, stop!"

He looked toward her.

For one brief moment, he resembled the frightened silver-haired child she had created.

"Mother."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I don't want to lose you."

Eryon smiled sadly.

"Then remember me."

The river of suffering surged into his body.

His form began to fracture.

Vaelthar staggered backward.

"What are you doing?"

Eryon's voice echoed across the collapsing city.

"Becoming something you never intended."

The darkness around him transformed.

Black fire turned silver.

Silver turned gold.

And gold became pure white.

Toby felt warmth return to his chest.

The First Flame trembled in Vaelthar's hand.

Then broke free.

It flew toward Toby.

The boy gasped.

Golden light erupted from his body.

His heart began beating again.

In High Valen, Elara screamed as Toby suddenly drew a breath.

Aldric stopped his compressions.

The boy's eyes opened.

Hazel.

Clear.

Alive.

"Mother?"

Elara sobbed.

She pulled him into her arms.

"My boy!"

Aldric covered his face.

For a moment, the king could only weep.

Seraphine sank to her knees.

Cassian embraced her.

The golden doorway began to widen.

Kael and Lyra's bodies stirred.

But Aurelith's physical form suddenly turned toward the broken seventh door.

Her expression changed.

"No."

Elara looked up.

"What?"

The Guardian stared toward the ceiling.

"The First Flame has returned."

Aldric nodded.

"Then we've won."

Aurelith shook her head.

"No."

The chamber trembled.

A deep voice echoed from above.

The covenant has been challenged.

Aurelith went pale.

The Keeper must descend.

Outside, the sky above High Valen split open.

Seven enormous golden chains appeared among the clouds.

At their center stood Vaelthar.

No longer a shadow.

No longer trapped within the memory realm.

His body was formed from silver fire, and his crown of broken stars blazed above the kingdom.

Every citizen in High Valen fell to their knees.

The ancient being looked down at the castle.

Then spoke.

"The First Flame has defied its creator. At dawn, I will erase the kingdom that shelters it."

Inside the fading crystal city, Toby turned toward Eryon.

The former Devourer lay beneath a circle of white light.

His body was disappearing.

Toby rushed toward him.

"Eryon!"

The silver-haired child looked up.

He smiled weakly.

"You came back."

Toby knelt.

"You're coming with me."

Eryon shook his head.

"I can't."

"Yes, you can!"

The child looked toward the collapsing sky.

"I used everything I had."

Toby's eyes filled with tears.

"Then I'll give you some of my light."

Eryon smiled.

"You already did."

The boy's form became transparent.

Toby reached for his hand.

For one brief moment, their fingers touched.

Eryon whispered, "Thank you for giving me a name."

Then he disappeared.

Toby remained kneeling.

The crystal city dissolved around him.

And somewhere beyond the collapsing memory realm, Vaelthar's voice thundered once more.

"At dawn, the First Flame must surrender—or every soul in High Valen will perish."
