Chapter 15 - The Price of Carrying Every Sorrow
# Chapter 15 - The Price of Carrying Every Sorrow
The first person Toby saw dying was someone he had never met.
A little girl stood barefoot in the ruins of a burning village, clutching a wooden doll against her chest. Flames consumed the houses around her, and smoke blotted out the sky. She was crying for her mother, but nobody answered.
Toby tried to reach her.
"Come here! I'll help you!"
The girl looked straight through him.
Then the burning village disappeared.
A battlefield replaced it.
Thousands of wounded soldiers lay beneath a blood-red sunset. A young man knelt beside his brother, begging him to open his eyes. Somewhere nearby, a horse screamed.
Before Toby could understand what was happening, the battlefield vanished.
He stood in a freezing room beside an elderly woman who was dying alone.
Then a prison.
Then a sinking ship.
Then a city collapsing beneath an unfamiliar sky.
The visions came faster.
Hundreds.
Thousands.
Millions.
Every grief the nameless creature had consumed was pouring into his mind.
Toby screamed.
"Make it stop!"
But the memories continued.
He felt every loss as though it belonged to him.
Every betrayal.
Every moment of terror.
Every desperate prayer that had gone unanswered.
And beneath it all, he heard the creature laughing.
Now you understand.
Toby fell to his knees.
His hands were glowing white.
The golden flame on his wrist had vanished beneath a spreading network of silver cracks.
This is what your precious compassion has given you.
He pressed his palms against his temples.
"I was trying to help!"
And now you will carry what I carried.
The darkness closed around him.
Forever.
In the shattered crystal city, Kael watched Toby rise several feet above the ground.
White fire streamed from the boy's eyes.
His hair floated as though suspended underwater, and the air around him twisted with unbearable heat.
Lyra shielded her face.
"Kael! What's happening?"
"I don't know!"
He rushed toward Toby.
The moment he crossed the circle of white light, a wave of memories struck him.
He was nine years old again.
The western nursery.
A locked door.
A woman screaming his name.
Then Queen Claudia appeared, holding a silver cup.
Drink this, little prince.
Kael stumbled.
He remembered the bitterness of the liquid.
The darkness that followed.
The years of believing his mother had abandoned him.
But now the memory continued.
Something he had never seen before.
Claudia kneeling beside his bed.
Her hands trembling.
Tears running down her face.
Forgive me, Kael.
The memory vanished.
Kael staggered backward.
Lyra caught him.
"What did you see?"
He stared at Toby.
"Something I forgot."
"About Claudia?"
Kael nodded.
For years, he had believed the queen was incapable of regret.
Now he knew she had regretted at least one thing.
But regret had not stopped her.
That realization hurt more than the memory itself.
Lyra tightened her grip on his arm.
"We need to get Toby out of there."
Kael looked toward the boy.
White fire had begun spreading across the crystal streets.
Every place it touched dissolved into glowing ash.
Liora stood nearby, staring in horror.
"The Flame is absorbing the entire memory realm."
Kael turned.
"Then stop it!"
"I don't know how!"
"You brought him here!"
Liora flinched.
"I thought the eighth seal could be restored."
"Well, it can't!"
She lowered her eyes.
Kael immediately regretted the cruelty in his voice.
But there was no time to apologize.
The ground beneath them split open.
A wave of white fire rushed toward Lyra.
Kael threw himself in front of her.
His damaged Nightglass sword absorbed the impact.
The blade shattered.
Black fragments scattered across the street.
Kael cried out as the force hurled him backward.
Lyra screamed his name.
He struck the ground hard.
For a moment, he could not breathe.
Then he looked down.
The black crown mark on his wrist had begun to glow again.
Not with Malachar's darkness.
With silver light.
Far beneath High Valen, Aurelith knelt beside Toby's unconscious body.
His skin was burning.
White cracks spread across his arms and throat.
Elara held him desperately.
"Do something!"
Aurelith placed both hands above the boy's chest.
Golden symbols appeared between her fingers.
But the moment they touched Toby, they shattered.
The Guardian recoiled.
Aldric caught her.
"What happened?"
"The Flame is rejecting me."
Elara stared.
"Why?"
Aurelith's expression twisted.
"Because I created the Devourer."
Claudia stood near the broken seventh door, clutching the Phoenix feather.
For once, she seemed genuinely uncertain.
"Then perhaps you should tell us what you did."
Aurelith looked at her.
"I already told you."
"No."
Claudia stepped forward.
"You told us what you intended. Not what actually happened."
The accusation hung in the chamber.
Aurelith lowered her eyes.
Seraphine looked up.
"She's right."
The Guardian remained silent.
Cassian approached.
"If our children are dying because of something you created, then we deserve the truth."
Aurelith closed her eyes.
For four hundred years, she had carried a secret that even the First Flame's guardians had never been allowed to know.
Now the secret had returned to destroy everything she had tried to protect.
"The Devourer was not meant to absorb suffering alone," she whispered.
Elara frowned.
"What else?"
Aurelith looked toward Toby.
"It was meant to transform suffering into light."
Aldric stared.
"Then why did it fail?"
"Because I removed something from it."
Claudia's expression hardened.
"What?"
Aurelith's voice broke.
"The ability to feel love."
The chamber fell silent.
Seraphine slowly rose.
"You created something that could experience every pain in existence but could never experience love?"
Aurelith began to cry.
"I believed affection would interfere with its purpose."
Claudia stared at her.
For a moment, the queen looked almost disgusted.
"You made it suffer."
"I didn't understand."
"You made it suffer forever."
Aurelith lowered her head.
"I know."
Elara looked down at Toby.
Her son had spent his entire life longing for love.
And now he was carrying the pain of a creature that had never known it.
She held him tighter.
"What happens if he absorbs everything?"
Aurelith's voice was barely audible.
"His human memories will disappear."
Elara froze.
"What?"
"He will forget his childhood. His family. His name."
"No."
"And when nothing remains except suffering, the First Flame will become a new Devourer."
Elara shook her head desperately.
"No!"
Aurelith looked toward the Phoenix feather.
"There is one way to stop it."
Claudia tightened her grip on the silver box.
"What way?"
The Guardian slowly raised her eyes.
"Someone must enter the memory realm and give the boy something stronger than the suffering he carries."
Aldric frowned.
"What could be stronger?"
Aurelith looked at Elara.
"A memory he would never willingly surrender."
Inside the white fire, Toby stood before the ruins of the Dawn Sanctuary.
The building was burning.
Again.
He saw Master Edrin kneeling beside the chapel doors.
Blood stained the old man's robes.
"Toby!"
The boy rushed toward him.
"Master!"
Edrin reached for him.
"Run!"
Toby stopped.
He knew this memory.
He had lived it.
But something was different.
This time, he could see beyond the burning doors.
Three Black Guard soldiers stood outside.
One carried a torch.
Another held a crossbow.
The third wore a silver serpent mask.
Toby recognized the voice beneath it.
Kael.
His stomach tightened.
The memory continued.
Kael raised his sword.
Edrin stepped between him and the hidden tunnel.
"There's no child here."
Kael looked toward the passage.
"Move."
"I won't."
The young commander hesitated.
Then a voice sounded from behind him.
Kill the old man.
Toby turned.
Queen Claudia stood beyond the flames.
But she was not speaking.
The voice came from a black gemstone hanging around her neck.
Malachar.
Toby stared.
Kael raised his sword.
Then lowered it.
"No."
The memory flickered.
Toby stepped closer.
Kael turned toward his soldiers.
"Search the outer buildings."
The guards hesitated.
"But the queen ordered—"
"I gave you an order."
They withdrew.
Kael looked at Edrin.
For a moment, their eyes met.
Then the young commander whispered, "Get the boy out."
Toby stopped breathing.
Kael had known.
He had seen the hidden passage.
And he had let Toby escape.
The memory changed.
Edrin collapsed beside the chapel.
Kael knelt.
He pressed a cloth against the old man's wound.
"Stay awake."
Edrin coughed.
"Why are you helping me?"
Kael looked toward the burning sanctuary.
"I don't know."
Then he lifted Edrin and carried him away.
Toby stared.
All this time, he had believed Kael was one of the people responsible for his mentor's death.
But Kael had saved him.
And Master Edrin.
A strange warmth spread through Toby's chest.
For the first time since absorbing the Devourer's suffering, the white fire around him flickered.
A small golden spark appeared.
In the crystal city, Kael suddenly remembered the sanctuary.
He gasped.
Lyra caught him.
"What?"
"I saved Edrin."
She stared.
"What?"
"The night the sanctuary burned."
Kael looked toward Toby.
"I remember now."
Liora stepped closer.
"Then the memories are returning."
Kael nodded.
"Malachar suppressed anything that contradicted Claudia's orders."
He swallowed.
"I let Toby escape."
Lyra's expression softened.
"Then you protected him before you even knew who he was."
Kael looked down at his hands.
For years, he had believed himself to be nothing more than Claudia's weapon.
But perhaps there had always been something inside him that refused to obey.
He looked toward Toby.
"Can he hear us?"
Liora hesitated.
"Maybe."
Kael stepped into the white fire.
Lyra seized his arm.
"Kael!"
He turned.
She looked frightened.
"Don't disappear."
He smiled faintly.
"Wasn't planning to."
Then he leaned forward and kissed her forehead.
It was brief.
Almost shy.
But it carried everything he had never found the courage to say.
Lyra's eyes filled with tears.
"Come back."
Kael nodded.
Then stepped into the light.
Toby stood in a field of white roses.
The suffering had stopped.
For the first time, there was silence.
He looked around.
A woman sat beneath a tree, holding a small child.
Elara.
His mother.
The child was him.
He watched her sing.
A lullaby he remembered from his dreams.
The same melody that had comforted him during lonely nights in the sanctuary.
Toby approached.
"Mother?"
She did not hear him.
The memory continued.
Elara kissed the infant's forehead.
"My little sun."
Aldric appeared beside her.
He knelt.
For a moment, the king looked younger.
Happier.
Unburdened by the secrets that would later destroy his family.
"He's beautiful," Aldric whispered.
Elara smiled.
"He has your eyes."
"And your stubbornness."
They laughed.
Toby felt tears gather.
He had spent eleven years believing he was unwanted.
Now he was watching proof that his parents had loved him before fear changed everything.
The memory shifted.
Master Edrin appeared in the nursery.
He lifted the infant carefully.
"Hello, little troublemaker."
Toby laughed through his tears.
Edrin smiled.
"You're going to be a handful."
The white roses began to glow.
Then another memory appeared.
Seraphine kneeling beside the infant's cradle.
Kael stood beside her, only a little boy himself.
He reached toward Toby's tiny hand.
"Can I hold him?"
Seraphine laughed.
"Not yet."
Kael frowned.
"Why?"
"Because he's very small."
The little boy considered this.
Then gently placed one finger inside Toby's palm.
The infant grabbed it.
Kael's face lit up.
"He likes me!"
Toby stared.
He had known Kael before the palace fire.
Before Claudia's lies.
Before the Black Guard.
They had once been family.
The realization struck him with unexpected force.
The white fire around him began turning gold.
In High Valen, Aurelith raised the Phoenix feather above Toby's body.
Elara knelt beside him.
"What do I do?"
The Guardian looked at her.
"Speak to him."
Elara swallowed.
"What should I say?"
"The truth."
She looked down at her son.
For eleven years, she had dreamed of telling him how much she loved him.
Now she feared her words would never reach him.
She touched his cheek.
"Tobias."
The boy remained motionless.
She began to cry.
"I was afraid."
Aldric lowered his head.
Elara continued.
"I was afraid of losing you. Afraid of Malachar. Afraid of the kingdom falling."
Her voice trembled.
"And because I was afraid, I made choices that hurt people."
She looked toward Seraphine.
"I'm sorry."
Seraphine's eyes filled with tears.
Elara turned back to Toby.
"I cannot undo what I did."
She kissed his forehead.
"But I can promise you this."
Her voice broke.
"If you come back, I will never ask you to carry our mistakes again."
The Phoenix feather blazed.
A golden thread emerged from Elara's chest.
It drifted toward Toby.
Aurelith watched in astonishment.
"The memory bond."
Aldric stepped forward.
"What?"
"The Flame is responding."
The golden thread entered Toby's wrist.
His body trembled.
The white cracks across his skin began to fade.
Elara gasped.
"Tobias?"
For one brief moment, his fingers moved.
Then the light stopped.
Aurelith's expression changed.
"Something is blocking him."
Claudia looked toward the broken seventh door.
"What?"
The Guardian's face darkened.
"The Devourer."
Inside the memory realm, Toby stood before a massive black wall.
Beyond it, he could hear his mother's voice.
Tobias, come back.
He pressed his hands against the barrier.
"Mother!"
The wall did not move.
A shadow appeared behind him.
The nameless creature.
Its white mouth opened.
"You cannot leave."
Toby turned.
"Why?"
"Because you accepted my suffering."
"I was trying to help you."
The creature laughed.
"And you did."
Toby looked toward the golden memories floating around him.
His family.
His childhood.
The people who had loved him.
"Then let me go."
The creature's smile widened.
"No."
Toby frowned.
"Why?"
For the first time, the Devourer's voice trembled.
"Because if you leave, I will be alone again."
The answer surprised him.
He had expected hatred.
Threats.
Cruelty.
But beneath the creature's monstrous form, he heard something else.
Fear.
Toby stepped closer.
"You don't have to be alone."
The creature recoiled.
"Do not lie to me."
"I'm not."
"Everyone leaves."
Toby swallowed.
"Then come with me."
The creature froze.
"What?"
Toby extended his hand.
"You don't have to carry everything by yourself."
The white mouth trembled.
For a moment, the darkness surrounding the creature became still.
Then a voice sounded behind Toby.
"Don't."
He turned.
Kael stood several paces away.
His face was pale.
His Nightglass sword was gone.
But his eyes were clear.
"Kael?"
The young man approached.
"That thing is using you."
Toby looked toward the creature.
"Maybe."
Kael stared.
"Maybe?"
Toby swallowed.
"But I think it's afraid."
Kael looked at the enormous shadow.
Then at the boy.
"Toby, fear doesn't make someone harmless."
"I know."
"Then don't give it your trust."
Toby hesitated.
Kael stepped closer.
"Give it a choice."
The boy frowned.
"What?"
"Trust has to be earned."
The words settled between them.
Toby slowly turned toward the creature.
"Kael's right."
The white mouth narrowed.
"Of course he is."
Toby continued.
"If you want to come with me, you have to stop hurting people."
The creature laughed.
"I cannot."
"Then learn."
The darkness trembled.
Toby held out his hand.
"But you have to choose."
For a long moment, the creature did not move.
Then its enormous body began to shrink.
The black tendrils withdrew.
The white mouth disappeared.
And where the monster had stood, a small child appeared.
A little boy with silver hair and dark eyes.
He looked no older than six.
Toby stared.
"Who are you?"
The child looked down at his hands.
For the first time, he seemed uncertain.
"I don't know."
Kael stepped forward.
"Don't trust this."
But Toby remained still.
The child looked up.
"Do I have a name?"
Toby hesitated.
Then smiled gently.
"Not yet."
The boy's eyes filled with tears.
"Can I have one?"
Toby opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, the memory realm shook.
A terrible voice echoed from beyond the black wall.
Do not name him.
Aurelith.
Toby looked toward the barrier.
The Guardian's voice thundered.
The Devourer was stripped of its name for a reason.
The silver-haired child began to tremble.
Kael seized Toby's arm.
"Listen to her."
But the child looked at Toby with desperate hope.
"Please."
Toby stared.
A name.
Such a small thing.
Yet every adult in his life had hidden names, stolen names, or used names to control others.
He thought of Malachar.
Of Caelen.
Of the royal birthmark.
Of the true name his father had concealed.
Then he looked at the child.
"What happens if I name you?"
The boy shook his head.
"I don't know."
The black wall cracked.
Aurelith's voice rose.
Tobias, do not give him a name!
The child began to cry.
Toby hesitated.
Then the golden flame on his wrist pulsed.
A memory surfaced.
Not of his childhood.
Not of the Old Dynasty.
But of the First Flame itself.
He saw Aurelith standing before a newly created being.
A small silver-haired child.
The child reached toward her.
Mother?
Aurelith stepped backward.
You were not made to love.
The child began to cry.
Then the Guardian raised her hand.
And erased its name.
Toby gasped.
The memory vanished.
He looked at the child standing before him.
Then toward the black wall.
For the first time, he understood why the Devourer had become a monster.
It had been created to carry pain.
Denied love
