Chapter 12 - The Queen's Final Bargain
# Chapter 12 - The Queen's Final Bargain
The golden throne room offered Toby two choices, and both required someone he loved to die.
"Save your family," Queen Aurelia whispered, "or save the world."
Behind him, the ancient bridge began collapsing.
Enormous stone slabs broke away from its surface, disappearing into the bottomless darkness beneath the basilica. Golden dust poured from the ceiling, and the last remaining support chain snapped with a deafening metallic scream.
"Toby!" Elara shouted.
She seized his arm just as the floor beneath his feet gave way.
For one terrifying moment, he hung above the abyss, his legs kicking helplessly.
Then Ser Kaelen caught his other wrist.
"Hold on!"
The knight pulled with all his strength.
Elara braced herself against the remaining stones.
Together, they dragged Toby onto the narrow ledge before the throne room.
Behind them, the bridge collapsed completely.
There was no way back.
Mara, Malrec, and Cassian remained stranded on the opposite side, separated from the royal children by a chasm filled with rising golden smoke.
"Toby!" Mara called.
He looked across the darkness.
"We're all right!"
Cassian rushed toward the broken edge.
"Elara!"
She turned.
"I'm here!"
Her father looked toward the golden throne.
His expression changed.
"No..."
Queen Aurelia slowly rose.
Her white gown flowed across the polished floor without touching it. Seven golden stars floated above her silver hair, forming a crown that shone brighter than the sun.
She appeared beautiful.
Almost gentle.
But Toby could feel something terrible beneath that beauty.
A hunger that had survived four hundred years.
Aurelia extended one hand.
"Come closer, my heir."
Toby stepped backward.
"No."
The queen smiled.
"You have traveled so far to find me."
"I came to save my mother."
"And you have."
Lysandra stood beside him, her translucent form trembling.
She looked toward Aurelia with undisguised hatred.
"You have no right to speak to my son."
Aurelia's expression softened.
"Lysandra. My brave, foolish descendant."
"Stay away from him."
The queen sighed.
"Even after everything your family has done, you still believe I am your enemy."
Lysandra stepped between Aurelia and Toby.
"You are the reason this kingdom has sacrificed children for four hundred years."
Aurelia's smile disappeared.
"No."
Her voice became colder.
"I am the reason your kingdom still exists."
Far above them, King Alaric struggled to hold the First King beneath the ruined sanctuary.
The creature's enormous body had risen almost completely from the abyss.
Its seven floating crowns rotated around its head, casting shadows across the broken cathedral walls.
Alaric stood before it, gripping the shattered Crown of Ashes.
Black fire poured from the cracks in his armor.
"You cannot leave this place," he said.
The First King laughed.
You are no longer my jailer.
Alaric raised the broken crown.
"Then I will become your executioner."
He struck the floor.
A ring of black iron erupted around the creature.
For one brief moment, the First King stopped moving.
Then its enormous golden eyes narrowed.
You cannot destroy what created your bloodline.
Alaric clenched his jaw.
"Perhaps not."
He looked toward the passage where his children had disappeared.
"But I can give them time."
The First King lowered its massive head.
You still believe they can save you.
Alaric's expression darkened.
"No."
He raised the crown again.
"I believe they can save each other."
The creature roared.
A wave of darkness struck the sanctuary.
Alaric was thrown against a shattered column.
His armor cracked.
Blood spilled from his mouth.
But he forced himself to stand.
He had already lost twelve years with his children.
He would not surrender the few moments he had left.
Inside the golden throne room, Aurelia approached Toby.
The black crown-shaped mark on his hand began burning.
He winced.
Elara caught his wrist.
"What's happening?"
Aurelia looked at the mark.
"The succession is almost complete."
Toby stared at her.
"Then stop it."
"I can."
"How?"
The queen extended her hand.
"Give me the Crownfire."
Lysandra immediately stepped forward.
"No."
Aurelia ignored her.
"Your power belongs to me, Tobias. It was separated from my soul centuries ago."
Toby looked down at his hand.
Golden flames flickered beneath his skin.
"If I give it back, what happens to me?"
Aurelia hesitated.
Then she smiled.
"You will be free."
Lysandra shook her head.
"She means your body will be free of the Crownfire. She has not promised that you will survive."
Toby looked toward the queen.
"Will I?"
Aurelia's expression remained calm.
"Your sacrifice would save millions."
Elara stepped between them.
"Then the answer is no."
The queen looked at her.
"Princess Elara. Always the protective sister."
Elara raised her dagger.
"I've only been his sister for a few hours."
"And yet you would die for him."
"Yes."
Toby turned sharply.
"Elara!"
She did not look away from Aurelia.
"I already betrayed him once. I won't do it again."
The queen studied her.
Then she smiled.
"How fortunate."
Elara frowned.
"What?"
Aurelia raised one hand.
The golden floor beneath Elara's feet ignited.
Seven circles appeared around her.
Lysandra screamed.
"Elara, move!"
But the girl was already trapped.
Golden chains erupted from the floor, wrapping around her wrists.
She struggled.
The dagger fell from her hand.
Toby rushed toward her.
"LET HER GO!"
Aurelia's voice became cold.
"You asked me to spare your brother."
Elara stared at her.
"No..."
The queen continued.
"Very well."
The chains tightened.
"I accept your sacrifice."
Toby screamed.
Golden fire erupted from his hands.
The flames struck Aurelia directly in the chest.
For one instant, the queen's body dissolved into brilliant light.
Then she reappeared beside the throne.
Unharmed.
She looked almost disappointed.
"Violence again, Tobias?"
"Let her go!"
Aurelia shook her head.
"The Crownfire cannot harm its source."
Toby stepped backward.
His hands trembled.
Elara struggled against the chains.
"Toby, don't listen to her!"
The queen raised one finger.
Elara cried out as the chains tightened.
Toby froze.
"Stop!"
Aurelia smiled.
"Then listen carefully."
The golden walls began changing.
Images appeared across their surfaces.
Toby saw the kingdom as it had existed four hundred years earlier.
A land divided by war.
Burning villages.
Starving children.
Armies marching beneath seven different banners.
At the center stood a young Queen Aurelia.
She looked exhausted.
Desperate.
And terribly human.
"I was twenty-three when I inherited a dying kingdom," Aurelia said.
The vision shifted.
Aurelia stood before an ancient golden gate.
Beyond it waited the First King.
"He offered me the power to unite the seven kingdoms."
Toby watched as the queen accepted a crown of golden fire.
The battlefield changed.
The armies knelt.
The wars ended.
For a brief moment, the kingdom prospered.
Then the vision darkened.
The First King demanded his payment.
Seven children.
One from each royal bloodline.
Aurelia refused.
The creature punished her.
Plagues spread.
Crops failed.
Cities burned.
Aurelia returned to the golden gate.
"I tried to destroy him," she whispered.
The vision showed her raising a sword of white fire.
The First King laughed.
His body shattered.
But his essence entered Aurelia.
She screamed.
The vision split.
Two figures emerged.
One clothed in golden light.
The other wrapped in darkness.
Toby stared.
"You divided yourself."
Aurelia nodded.
"I separated the part of my soul that still remembered compassion from the part corrupted by the First King's hunger."
Lysandra's expression darkened.
"And then you imprisoned both halves."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Aurelia looked toward Toby.
"Because neither could survive without the other."
Toby frowned.
"Then the voice inside my head..."
"Was the compassionate fragment of my soul."
"And the creature that possessed my father?"
Aurelia's face hardened.
"The corrupted fragment, carrying the First King's will."
Toby looked toward the throne.
"Then who are you?"
For the first time, Aurelia did not answer immediately.
She lowered her gaze.
"I am what remains when those fragments are brought together."
Lysandra stepped backward.
"No..."
The queen looked at her.
"You understand now."
Toby felt cold.
"Understand what?"
Lysandra's voice trembled.
"The woman before us is neither the good half nor the corrupted half."
Aurelia smiled sadly.
"I am the original."
Across the broken bridge, Cassian watched the golden chains tighten around Elara.
His face drained of color.
"No."
He rushed toward the chasm.
Malrec caught his arm.
"You'll fall!"
Cassian struggled.
"She's my daughter!"
Mara looked toward the throne room.
The golden circles surrounding Elara were growing brighter.
She recognized the symbols.
The same binding that had imprisoned her for twelve years.
"They're preparing the transfer," she whispered.
Malrec turned.
"What transfer?"
"The Crownfire."
Cassian froze.
Mara continued.
"Once the ritual is complete, Elara will become the new vessel."
Cassian looked toward the queen.
"Seraphine told us the crown could be transferred."
Mara shook her head.
"That was what Edran wanted us to believe."
Malrec stared.
"Then what is the ritual actually doing?"
Mara's expression filled with horror.
"It isn't transferring the crown."
She looked toward Toby.
"It's separating the royal bloodline."
Cassian frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Mara swallowed.
"The First Oath allowed the Crownfire to be shared among willing guardians. But the corrupted covenant divided that power through forced sacrifice."
She pointed toward Elara.
"Aurelia is trying to use both children to reverse the division."
Malrec looked toward the golden throne.
"To restore herself."
Mara nodded.
"And if she succeeds, the First King will no longer be imprisoned beneath the basilica."
Cassian stared.
"Why?"
Mara's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Because he will have a living queen powerful enough to release him."
Inside the throne room, Toby stared at Aurelia.
"You want to free the First King."
The queen's expression changed.
"I want to end four hundred years of suffering."
"By sacrificing us?"
"By restoring what was broken."
Elara struggled against the chains.
"Don't believe her!"
Aurelia turned.
"You know nothing of sacrifice, child."
Elara's eyes flashed.
"I know what it's like to have my life stolen by people who claim they're protecting me."
The queen fell silent.
Elara continued.
"My father lied to me. My family hid the truth. Everyone decided what I should become."
She looked toward Toby.
"But I get to decide what happens now."
The golden chains tightened.
Elara cried out.
Toby rushed forward.
"STOP!"
Aurelia raised her hand.
The chains froze.
Then she looked at Toby.
"One final bargain."
He stared at her.
"What?"
"Give me your Crownfire willingly, and I will release your sister."
Lysandra shook her head.
"No."
Aurelia continued.
"I will restore your mother's body and soul. I will free your father from the First King's corruption. And I will spare Elara."
Toby felt his heart pounding.
"All of them?"
"All of them."
"And the kingdom?"
Aurelia hesitated.
Then she answered.
"The kingdom will survive."
Lysandra stepped forward.
"At what cost?"
The queen's eyes darkened.
"Every kingdom has a cost."
Toby looked toward Elara.
She shook her head desperately.
"Don't do it."
He looked toward his mother.
Her translucent form was fading.
He thought of his father fighting alone above them.
He thought of Brother Alden.
Of Mara's twelve years in darkness.
Of Queen Seraphine dissolving into golden light to save him.
Every sacrifice had been made in the name of protecting someone else.
And every sacrifice had created another prisoner.
Toby closed his eyes.
Then he remembered something.
Aurelia's words inside the white hall.
The Crownfire was never meant to belong to one person.
It was meant to be shared.
Not stolen.
Not surrendered.
Shared.
He opened his eyes.
"I accept."
Elara screamed.
"TOBY!"
Aurelia smiled.
"Wise child."
She extended her hand.
"Then give me your power."
Toby stepped forward.
Golden fire spread across his arms.
The queen reached toward him.
But before their hands touched, he stopped.
"One condition."
Aurelia's smile faded.
"What condition?"
Toby looked toward Elara.
"Release her first."
The queen studied him.
Then she waved her hand.
The chains around Elara vanished.
The girl collapsed.
Toby rushed toward her.
She seized his wrist.
"Don't."
He knelt beside her.
For a moment, they simply looked at each other.
Then Toby smiled.
"Remember the honey cake?"
Elara stared at him.
"What?"
"You gave me half."
Tears filled her eyes.
"Toby..."
He squeezed her hand.
"Now it's my turn to share."
Golden light flowed from his palm into hers.
Elara gasped.
The Crownfire entered her body.
A seven-pointed star appeared beneath her skin.
Aurelia stepped backward.
"No."
Toby rose.
He looked toward Lysandra.
"Mother."
The princess understood.
Her expression changed.
"Tobias..."
He extended his hand.
Golden light flowed into her translucent form.
Lysandra became solid.
For the first time in twelve years, she felt warmth.
She looked down at her hands.
Then toward Toby.
The boy smiled.
"We're doing this together."
The golden light spread across the throne room.
It crossed the broken bridge.
Mara gasped as a star appeared upon her wrist.
Malrec staggered.
Cassian stared at his glowing hands.
Ser Kaelen lowered his head.
Far above, King Alaric felt the Crownfire enter his chest.
His shattered armor began shining.
The First King recoiled.
NO.
Aurelia screamed.
"YOU FOOLISH CHILD!"
Toby turned toward her.
"You said the Crownfire belonged to you."
The golden circle expanded.
"But it doesn't."
The queen's body began cracking.
Golden light poured from her skin.
Toby continued.
"It belongs to everyone willing to protect someone else."
Aurelia staggered backward.
The throne beneath her shattered.
"No!"
The First Oath awakened.
Seven pillars of golden fire rose from the depths of the basilica.
The First King screamed.
His enormous body began dissolving.
Alaric raised the broken Crown of Ashes.
"For my children."
He struck the creature with the full force of the restored oath.
The golden eyes shattered.
The darkness collapsed inward.
For one glorious moment, Toby believed they had won.
Then Aurelia began laughing.
A weak, terrible laugh.
Toby turned.
The queen stood amid the ruins of her throne.
Her body was dissolving.
But she was smiling.
"You finally understand the First Oath."
Toby stared.
"Then why are you laughing?"
Aurelia looked toward the seven golden pillars.
"Because the oath was never meant to destroy the First King."
The golden light began changing.
One pillar turned black.
Then another.
Then another.
Lysandra screamed.
"Tobias, stop the ritual!"
But the Crownfire was no longer obeying him.
The seven pillars bent toward the center of the chamber.
A colossal golden crown appeared above the throne.
Aurelia's smile widened.
"The First Oath was created to choose a ruler."
Toby stepped backward.
"No..."
The queen looked toward Elara.
Then Lysandra.
Then the golden light spreading through every guardian.
"You have gathered the blood, the power, and the willing hearts."
Her body dissolved into a thousand golden sparks.
And her final words echoed through the chamber.
"Now the kingdom must choose its true sovereign."
The golden crown descended.
Not toward Toby.
Not toward Elara.
But toward the broken bridge.
Toward the man standing on the opposite side.
Lord Cassian Voss.
He stared upward in horror.
The crown stopped above his head.
A voice emerged from the golden light.
Ancient.
Powerful.
Absolute.
"CASSIAN VOSS. THE FIRST KING'S BLOOD HAS BEEN FOUND."
Elara screamed.
"FATHER!"
Cassian fell to his knees.
His eyes turned gold.
And from his mouth came a voice that was not his own.
"My children... you have finally brought me home."
