# Chapter 10 - The Traitor Among the Seven

The six guardians collapsed at once, their bodies striking the shattered marble floor like puppets whose strings had been cut.

Lord Edran Solmere remained standing.

His crimson eyes burned beneath his white brows, and the silver symbols that had once moved beneath his skin turned black.

Then he began to laugh.

It was a terrible sound, filled with four hundred years of bitterness.

"Very clever, Prince Tobias."

Toby stood between Edran and Elara, golden fire circling his hands.

"You were never trying to save us."

Edran smiled.

"On the contrary. I have spent centuries trying to save this kingdom."

"By sacrificing children?"

"By preventing something far worse."

Ser Kaelen stepped forward, his broken sword raised.

"Edran, what have you done?"

The ancient guardian looked at him with undisguised contempt.

"What you lacked the courage to do."

Kaelen's expression hardened.

"I served the covenant."

"And I created the means to end it."

A deep rumble passed through the basilica.

Below them, the crowned figure imprisoned within the seventh chain began moving again.

Its black crown now bore five restored spikes.

Two remained broken.

Toby looked toward the abyss.

His father's body was still trapped beneath the darkness.

His mother's consciousness remained suspended inside the golden cage.

And somewhere beyond the walls of Saint Valerius, her living body waited in Blackthorn Palace.

Every answer seemed to lead toward another prison.

Edran followed his gaze.

"You want to save them."

Toby turned back.

"Yes."

"Then you will need me."

Elara stepped closer to her brother.

"Don't listen to him."

Edran smiled at her.

"Princess Elara. The daughter who was hidden in plain sight."

She raised her dagger.

"Say another word about my family."

"Your family?" Edran laughed. "You still don't understand what your family has done."

Toby raised his burning hand.

"Then tell us."

The old guardian's smile vanished.

"Very well."

He extended one finger toward the six unconscious guardians.

"Those six were never the true keepers of the covenant. They were replacements."

Kaelen went still.

"Replacements for whom?"

Edran looked toward the abyss.

"For the six royal children sacrificed before Tobias was born."

Silence engulfed the sanctuary.

Queen Seraphine staggered backward.

"No..."

Edran's eyes gleamed.

"Oh, Your Majesty. Did you truly believe your family was innocent?"

Seventeen years earlier, the royal council had gathered beneath Blackthorn Palace.

The kingdom was facing a crisis.

The seven ancient bindings were weakening.

For generations, the priests had renewed them through rituals involving royal blood, but the sacrifices were no longer sufficient.

Each new binding lasted fewer years than the one before it.

The council feared that the imprisoned entity would eventually escape.

Edran had offered a solution.

A permanent vessel.

One living heir powerful enough to contain the entire darkness.

"The first candidate was Elara," Edran explained.

Elara felt her stomach twist.

"Me?"

"Yes."

He looked toward Cassian.

"Your beloved guardian was instructed to raise you until the Crownfire awakened."

Cassian's expression darkened.

"You promised she would survive."

Edran laughed.

"I promised the vessel would survive."

Elara stared at Cassian.

He lowered his head.

Edran continued.

"But Princess Lysandra discovered the plan. She fled with her daughter and hid beneath the protection of House Voss."

"Then why did my mother disappear?" Elara demanded.

"Because she returned to the palace."

"Why?"

Edran's smile faded.

"To save her second child."

Toby's breath caught.

"Me."

The ancient guardian nodded.

"Your mother believed she could destroy the covenant before your first birthday."

He looked toward the golden cage.

"She nearly succeeded."

Far below, Lysandra raised her head.

Her expression filled with hatred.

"Edran..."

The guardian bowed mockingly.

"Princess."

"You promised the children would be spared."

"I promised the kingdom would endure."

"You murdered innocent people!"

Edran's face hardened.

"Six children died so millions could live."

Toby felt the golden fire surge around his fingers.

"Who were they?"

Edran hesitated.

The boy stepped closer.

"Tell me their names."

For the first time, the ancient guardian appeared uncertain.

Then he answered.

"Prince Darian. Princess Celene. Prince Oren. Princess Mirelle. Prince Lucan. Princess Eveline."

Seraphine covered her mouth.

Tears spilled down her cheeks.

Toby stared at her.

"You knew them?"

The queen nodded.

"They were children of the royal branches. Cousins. Nephews. Nieces."

Her voice broke.

"Some were younger than you."

Toby looked back at Edran.

"And you killed them?"

The guardian's expression remained cold.

"I fulfilled the covenant."

Toby shook his head.

"No."

Edran frowned.

"No?"

"You murdered them."

The golden fire grew brighter.

"And you called it duty because you didn't want to admit what you were."

Near the ruined altar, Mara struggled to keep Brother Alden conscious.

His breathing had become weaker.

Malrec knelt beside them, examining the black wound through his chest.

"The magic is spreading."

Mara looked up.

"Can you stop it?"

The inquisitor hesitated.

"I know a binding prayer."

"Then use it!"

Malrec looked toward the crimson seal.

"The prayer requires a sacred flame."

Mara followed his gaze.

The basilica's ceremonial lanterns had been extinguished during the battle.

Only Toby's golden fire remained.

She turned toward him.

"Toby!"

The boy looked back.

"Brother Alden needs you!"

Toby hesitated.

Edran smiled.

"Go to him, little prince."

Kaelen immediately raised his sword.

"Do not move."

Edran's eyes narrowed.

"Still pretending to be a guardian?"

Kaelen stepped between him and Toby.

"I am not pretending."

Toby rushed toward Alden.

The old monk lay pale and motionless.

Mara was crying.

"Please," she whispered. "Please help him."

Toby knelt.

He looked at the man who had raised him.

The man who had betrayed Mara.

The man who had lied to him.

And the man who had taken a fatal wound trying to protect him.

Toby placed his hand above Alden's chest.

Golden light flickered.

"Please work," he whispered.

The Crownfire flowed from his fingers.

Alden's body arched.

Mara gasped.

The black wound began glowing.

For one hopeful moment, the darkness seemed to retreat.

Then Toby screamed.

A sharp pain tore through his chest.

Black symbols appeared beneath his skin.

Malrec seized his shoulder.

"Stop!"

Toby tried to pull away.

He couldn't.

The wound was drawing the Crownfire out of him.

Mara stared in horror.

"It's killing him!"

Malrec struck Toby's wrist with the flat of his dagger.

The connection broke.

Toby collapsed.

Alden gasped for breath.

The wound remained.

And the old monk's eyes slowly opened.

"Toby..."

The boy crawled closer.

"I'm sorry."

Alden shook his head.

"No."

"I couldn't save you."

The monk managed a faint smile.

"You already did."

Toby's eyes filled with tears.

Alden reached toward Mara.

She took his hand.

For a moment, father and daughter looked at each other.

"I was afraid," Alden whispered.

Mara sobbed.

"I know."

"I thought I could save both of you."

"You should have told me."

"I know."

His breathing became shallow.

Mara gripped his hand.

"Don't leave."

Alden looked at her.

"You deserved a better father."

She shook her head desperately.

"Please..."

He turned toward Toby.

"Little star."

Toby began crying.

"Don't."

Alden smiled.

"Your mother was right."

His fingers loosened.

"Even in the darkness..."

His voice faded.

"...you shine."

Then his hand fell still.

Mara froze.

"Father?"

No answer.

She shook him.

"Father?"

The old monk did not move.

Mara pressed her forehead against his chest.

A terrible cry escaped her.

Toby sat motionless beside them.

He had imagined losing Brother Alden many times since the battle began.

But imagination had not prepared him for the silence.

For the absence of the familiar voice.

For the terrible realization that there would be no more winter stories, no more secret bowls of soup, no more gentle reminders to wash his hands.

Brother Alden was gone.

And this time, no magic brought him back.

Across the sanctuary, Edran watched the scene without emotion.

"One life," he murmured.

Kaelen turned.

"What?"

"One life ends. Another begins. That is the nature of the covenant."

The knight's expression darkened.

"You have learned nothing."

Edran smiled.

"On the contrary."

He raised both hands.

The six unconscious guardians began trembling.

Silver light poured from their bodies.

Their skin cracked.

Their eyes opened.

But they were no longer human.

Their bodies rose from the floor, suspended by black threads of magic.

Kaelen stepped backward.

"What are you doing?"

"Completing what I began four hundred years ago."

The six guardians turned toward the abyss.

Edran extended his arms.

"Their lives were bound to the covenant. Their deaths will break it."

Seraphine screamed.

"Stop!"

Too late.

The first guardian dissolved into silver ash.

A thunderous crack echoed from below.

The seventh chain split along its length.

The second guardian vanished.

Another crack.

The crowned figure beneath the basilica began laughing.

"YES!"

Kaelen lunged toward Edran.

But the ancient guardian raised one hand.

A wall of black fire erupted between them.

The third guardian dissolved.

Then the fourth.

The fifth.

The sixth.

Six pillars of silver light shot into the abyss.

The seventh chain shattered.

The sound was like the world breaking.

Toby looked up.

The entire basilica trembled.

The golden cage holding Lysandra's consciousness cracked.

The crowned figure rose from the abyss.

Its seven-spiked crown was whole.

For the first time, the darkness surrounding its body began peeling away.

A man emerged.

King Alaric Aurelian.

His face was pale and exhausted.

His silver-gray eyes were filled with pain.

But the black crown remained fixed upon his head.

Lysandra screamed.

"Alaric!"

The king looked toward her.

For one brief moment, recognition crossed his face.

"My love..."

Then his expression twisted.

A second voice emerged from his mouth.

"At last."

The darkness spread across his skin.

His eyes turned crimson.

Edran fell to one knee.

"My sovereign."

Kaelen stared.

"You serve it?"

Edran smiled.

"I have always served the true power beneath the throne."

The crowned king extended one hand.

Black fire gathered around his fingers.

"Four hundred years," he whispered.

Then he looked toward Toby.

"And now my heir stands before me."

Toby rose slowly.

His face was wet with tears.

"You killed Brother Alden."

The crowned king tilted his head.

"One old man among thousands."

Toby's hands began glowing.

Elara rushed toward him.

"Toby, don't!"

But he stepped forward.

"You killed six children."

The crowned king smiled.

"And many more."

"You hurt my mother."

"She resisted."

"You stole my father."

The smile widened.

"He invited me."

Toby's golden fire erupted.

"Then I'm going to take him back."

The crowned king laughed.

"You think you can defeat me?"

Toby raised his hand.

"No."

The king hesitated.

Toby looked toward Elara.

Then Mara.

Then Seraphine.

Then Kaelen.

"I think we can."

The Crownfire spread across the floor.

Golden symbols appeared beneath the feet of everyone standing near him.

Elara gasped as a warm light surrounded her.

Mara looked up.

Seraphine stared in disbelief.

Kaelen's broken sword began glowing.

The ancient guardian whispered, "The First Oath."

Edran's expression changed.

"No..."

Toby looked at him.

"You said the covenant required sacrifice."

Golden fire climbed the walls.

"But Queen Aurelia told me something else."

The crowned king stopped laughing.

Toby continued.

"The Crownfire was never meant to belong to one person."

The golden symbols connected.

A circle formed around the surviving allies.

"It was meant to be shared."

Seraphine began crying.

"The original oath..."

Kaelen lowered his head.

"Before the covenant was corrupted."

Toby raised both hands.

The golden fire surged toward the crowned king.

For the first time, the creature screamed in fear.

"No!"

The black crown cracked.

Alaric's human face emerged beneath the darkness.

"Tobias!"

The boy stepped closer.

"Father!"

Alaric struggled against the shadow.

"Do not stop!"

The golden circle brightened.

The creature screamed.

The crown split.

A shard of black metal flew across the sanctuary.

It struck Edran through the chest.

The ancient guardian staggered.

He looked down at the wound.

For the first time in four hundred years, he appeared truly mortal.

"No..."

He fell to his knees.

The crowned king screamed again.

The darkness surrounding him began separating from his body.

Toby felt hope rising.

They were winning.

Then Edran began laughing.

A weak, terrible laugh.

Kaelen turned toward him.

"What have you done?"

Edran coughed blood.

"You fools..."

The golden circle flickered.

Edran looked toward the shattered seventh chain.

"You think the crown was the prison?"

Toby froze.

The ancient guardian smiled.

"The crown was the lock."

The floor beneath the sanctuary split open.

A second abyss appeared.

Far deeper than the first.

From within it came a sound that made every person in the basilica stop breathing.

A heartbeat.

Slow.

Enormous.

Ancient.

Edran whispered his final words.

"Now you've opened the door."

Then he collapsed.

His body dissolved into silver ash.

The golden circle shattered.

Toby fell to his knees.

The crowned king staggered backward.

The darkness around Alaric's body peeled away completely.

For one brief moment, the king stood free.

He looked toward Lysandra.

Then toward his children.

His expression filled with horror.

"Run."

Toby stared.

"Father?"

Alaric seized the broken crown.

"RUN!"

The second abyss widened.

A colossal shadow moved beneath the earth.

It was larger than the basilica.

Larger than the city.

Its shape was impossible to understand.

Then two enormous eyes opened in the darkness.

They were not crimson.

They were golden.

The same color as Toby's Crownfire.

Queen Seraphine collapsed.

"No..."

Kaelen stared into the abyss.

His face drained of color.

"The First Hunger."

Alaric looked toward Toby.

His voice broke.

"Son, listen carefully."

Toby struggled to stand.

"What is that?"

The king's eyes filled with tears.

"The thing Queen Aurelia imprisoned before the First Dynasty."

Toby shook his head.

"But we destroyed the crown!"

Alaric looked toward the enormous eyes.

"Yes."

His voice became a whisper.

"And now nothing stands between it and the world."

The shadow rose.

The entire basilica began collapsing.

Toby reached toward his father.

"Come with us!"

Alaric shook his head.

"I cannot."

"Why?"

The king looked toward the broken crown in his hands.

"Because I was never its prisoner."

Toby froze.

Alaric's expression became unbearable.

"I was its guardian."

Then the enormous shadow spoke.

Its voice did not echo through the air.

It echoed inside every living mind.

"AT LAST, MY CHILDREN. THE FIRST KING HAS RETURNED."

Toby stared at his father.

Alaric closed his eyes.

And whispered the truth that changed everything.

"Tobias... I am not the first king."

He looked toward the colossal shadow.

"That is."
