“Dad.”
The word barely escaped Khloe’s lips.
Marcus caught her before her knees touched the floor.
“Khloe!”
She gripped his jacket, staring at the empty stairwell.
“He was there.”
“Who?”
“My father.”
Marcus froze.
“Your father is dead.”
“I know.”
A nurse hurried toward them. Marcus lifted Khloe and carried her back into the room despite her protests.
“Please,” she whispered. “You have to believe me.”
Marcus lowered her carefully onto the bed.
“I believe you saw someone.”
“That was him.”
“Eleven years, Khloe.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I watched them bury him.”
That sentence disturbed Marcus more than anything else she had said.
“Then tell me what happened eleven years ago.”
Khloe turned away.
Again, silence.
Marcus felt his patience fracture.
“Someone just called me and mentioned October seventeenth. Now you claim your dead father is walking through this hospital. Stop protecting whatever this is.”
Khloe stared at him.
“You got a call?”
“Yes.”
“What did they say?”
“To ask where you were that night.”
Fear replaced confusion.
“Marcus, delete the call.”
“Why?”
“Just do it.”
“No.”
She reached for his phone.
He stepped back.
“Not until you tell me the truth.”
Before Khloe could answer, David entered.
He stopped when he saw their faces.
“What happened?”
Marcus looked directly at him.
“Apparently your dead brother is walking around your hospital.”
David said nothing.
That silence was enough.
Marcus narrowed his eyes.
“You know something.”
David closed the door.
“Security found an executive credential used tonight.”
“Whose?”
David looked at Khloe.
“Daniel Sterling’s.”
Khloe covered her mouth.
Marcus stared between them.
“Someone copied his credentials.”
“Maybe,” David said.
“Maybe?”
“The badge should not exist.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Wonderful. Anything else your family forgot to mention before I married into it?”
“Marcus,” Khloe whispered.
His phone vibrated.
A message from Ethan.
**Found something on Isabella. Call me.**
Marcus stepped into the corridor.
“Talk.”
Ethan’s voice came immediately.
“Isabella Rossi isn’t the problem.”
“What does that mean?”
“She has connections to Sterling Medical, but nothing major. I searched archived corporate filings like you asked.”
“And?”
“Eleven years ago, three days before Daniel Sterling died, he created a private holding company.”
Marcus frowned.
“Why?”
“I don’t know. But someone activated it again six months ago.”
“Who?”
“That’s the strange part. Authorization required two signatures.”
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
“Whose?”
“Daniel Sterling.”
Marcus looked through the glass at Khloe.
“And the second?”
Ethan hesitated.
“Khloe Sterling.”
---
Inside the room, David pulled the curtain closed.
“Tell me exactly what you saw.”
Khloe’s voice trembled.
“He looked older.”
“Of course he did.”
“No, Uncle David. You don’t understand.”
She grabbed his wrist.
“It wasn’t someone who looked like Dad.”
David stared at her.
“It was him.”
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then David asked the question he had avoided for eleven years.
“What happened the night your father died?”
Khloe released him.
“You know.”
“I know what the police report says.”
She looked toward the door.
Marcus was still outside.
“No,” she whispered.
“You know what everyone was supposed to believe.”
David went still.
“What does that mean?”
Khloe began crying.
“I saw him after the accident.”
David’s face drained of color.
“What?”
“He came to me.”
“When?”
“The next morning.”
“That’s impossible.”
“He was injured. There was blood everywhere.”
David stared at his niece.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
“Because Dad made me promise.”
“Promise what?”
Khloe looked at him.
“That I would let the world believe he was dead.”
The door suddenly opened.
Marcus stood there.
He had heard enough.
“Then whose body,” he asked slowly, “did we bury?”
No one answered.
Marcus’s phone vibrated again.
A photograph appeared from an unknown number.
It showed a coffin.
Daniel Sterling’s funeral.
Marcus enlarged the image.
Someone had circled one person standing among the mourners.
A seventeen-year-old Khloe.
Below it was a message:
**SHE KNEW THE COFFIN WAS EMPTY.**
