Chapter 12 - The Last Lie

**BIOLOGICAL FATHER: NOT MARCUS THORNE.**

Marcus stared at the screen.

Khloe stopped breathing.

“No.”

She looked at Marcus immediately.

“No. Marcus, I have never—”

“I know.”

His answer came without hesitation.

Khloe froze.

Marcus took her hand.

“I know.”

After every lie surrounding them, this was one truth he did not question.

Adrian examined the report.

“Then the result was manipulated.”

Dr. Caldwell shook his head.

“The laboratory system shows no manual alteration.”

Jonathan stepped closer.

“Because they weren’t testing Marcus Thorne.”

Everyone turned toward him.

He pointed at the screen.

“Project 417 still recognizes Marcus under his original genetic identity.”

Adrian understood first.

“Michael Jonathan Thorne.”

Jonathan nodded.

“The comparison algorithm was deliberately instructed to exclude the identity Marcus Thorne.”

Marcus stared at the report.

“So technically…”

“The result is meaningless,” Dr. Caldwell said. “We repeat the testing independently.”

Hours later, the answer came.

Marcus was the biological father.

Khloe began crying.

Marcus pressed his forehead against hers.

For the first time that night, neither cared about Project 417.

Their baby was alive.

And theirs.

---

But Project Heir was real.

Adrian recovered the remaining files before sunrise.

Victor had spent years identifying descendants of Project 417 subjects.

Not to create superior children.

Not to clone anyone.

The purpose was simpler.

And uglier.

Money.

The original project had hidden enormous assets behind fabricated identities, trusts and medical foundations.

Children descended from certain subjects could legally unlock fortunes no living Sterling knew existed.

Khloe and Marcus’s baby was one of them.

**HEIR-01.**

Worth nearly four billion dollars.

“That’s why Victor needed the genetic profile,” Marcus said.

Jonathan nodded.

“With confirmation, he could construct the documentation needed to control the trusts before your child was old enough to know they existed.”

Khloe looked disgusted.

“All of this for money?”

Adrian closed the laptop.

“It usually is.”

---

Victor Hale was charged.

The evidence Isabella preserved connected him to the security manipulation, the attack on Khloe, identity fraud and Project 417.

Isabella accepted responsibility for her own actions.

She had lied.

Manipulated Khloe.

Worked with Adrian.

But when she saw the needle approaching Khloe, she had tried to stop the attack.

The missing three seconds proved it.

Isabella had pulled Khloe away.

Another man had struck the chair.

Khloe had fallen during the struggle.

She had not forgiven Isabella.

Perhaps she never would.

But the truth was finally clear.

---

Daniel Sterling surrendered himself voluntarily.

Eleven years of living as a dead man required explanations no family conversation could solve.

Jonathan did the same.

David survived surgery.

His confession about killing Jonathan had contained another twisted truth: David had attacked Jonathan years earlier after being manipulated into believing Jonathan had betrayed the family.

He had believed Jonathan died.

Project 417 had made certain everyone believed exactly what they needed to believe.

Adrian handed the complete archive to federal investigators.

“What will you do now?” Marcus asked him.

Adrian looked at the bracelet bearing the name they had once shared.

“For the first time?”

He smiled faintly.

“Find out who I am without a project telling me.”

Then he walked away.

---

Three months later, Marcus stood beside Khloe on the balcony of their home.

The pregnancy was progressing normally.

Behind them sat the silver key to Box 417.

Neither wanted it anymore.

Khloe rested her head against Marcus’s shoulder.

“I should have told you before we married.”

“Yes.”

She looked up, surprised by the blunt answer.

Marcus smiled slightly.

“You want me to pretend otherwise?”

“No.”

“I’m still angry.”

“I know.”

“And rebuilding trust takes longer than solving a mystery.”

“I know that too.”

He placed his hand over her stomach.

“But I’m here.”

Khloe covered his hand with hers.

“So am I.”

That was enough.

Not perfect forgiveness.

Not a magical repair.

A beginning.

---

Six months later, their daughter was born.

They named her Elizabeth Catherine Thorne.

Not because of Project 417.

Because two women whose names had been used and distorted by others deserved to be remembered for who they actually were.

Marcus refused every trust connected to Project Heir until investigators established its legitimate ownership.

Daniel testified.

David retired from Sterling Medical Group.

Jonathan slowly became part of Marcus’s life—not as the father Marcus had always wanted, but as a complicated man trying to earn a place he had surrendered decades earlier.

And the Project 417 servers were dismantled.

One by one.

Every stolen identity was investigated.

Every surviving victim was given the opportunity to learn the truth.

Some wanted it.

Others chose the lives they already had.

Marcus finally understood something Project 417 never had.

Identity was more than DNA.

More than a birth certificate.

More than a name inside a database.

It was the life a person chose after learning the truth.

---

One year later, Marcus and Khloe attended another Sterling Medical charity gala.

The same ballroom had been restored.

The broken crystal was gone.

The overturned chair was gone.

The camera remained.

Khloe noticed Marcus looking at it.

“What?”

He smiled.

“Nothing.”

She followed his gaze.

“The cameras.”

Marcus nodded.

Khloe took his hand.

“They caused a lot of trouble.”

“No.”

Marcus looked at his wife.

“People caused the trouble.”

Above them, the camera continued recording silently.

Khloe smiled.

“And cameras?”

Marcus remembered David’s words from the night everything began.

“Cameras never lie.”

His phone vibrated.

For a moment, both of them froze.

Marcus took it out.

Unknown number.

Khloe’s smile disappeared.

“Marcus…”

He opened the message.

There was no threat.

No photograph.

No secret identity.

Only six words:

**PROJECT 417 INVESTIGATION OFFICIALLY CLOSED.**

Marcus showed Khloe.

She exhaled.

“Is it finally over?”

Marcus deleted the message.

Then he switched off his phone.

“Yes.”

This time, he meant it.

He took his wife’s hand and led her back toward the ballroom, where their daughter was waiting in Jonathan’s arms.

Behind them, the security camera continued to record.

But there were no missing seconds.

No erased footage.

No hidden man in the reflection.

Nothing left to conceal.

For the first time in decades, the Sterling family had no secret worth protecting with a lie.

And Marcus Thorne no longer needed anyone to tell him who he was.

He already knew.
