Chapter 9 - The Prince Who Was Never Born
The skull beneath the throne opened its eyes.
They were Toby's eyes.
Hazel, frightened, and unmistakably alive.
For one terrible moment, the ten-year-old boy stared into the face of something that should have been dead for centuries.
Then the skull spoke.
"You're wearing my life."
Toby staggered backward.
Mira caught his arm.
The silver tablet beside the skull burned with golden light.
TOBY — FIRST HEIR OF THE HOLLOW KING
Above them, the ancient voice repeated its verdict.
"THE CHILD KNOWN AS TOBY IS THE VESSEL PREPARED FOR THE HOLLOW KING'S RETURN."
King Alaric remained kneeling beside the shattered throne.
His face was pale.
His newly restored memories seemed to have left him more frightened than his years of imprisonment.
"No," he whispered. "That cannot be right."
The skull turned toward him.
Its empty jaws opened.
"Hello, Father."
Alaric recoiled.
Toby felt something break inside his chest.
He had spent his entire life wondering who his parents were. He had imagined a hundred explanations for his abandonment.
He had never imagined that he might not belong to himself.
"What are you?" he asked.
The skull's eyes narrowed.
"I was going to ask you the same question."
Mira stepped between them.
"Stop speaking to him."
The skull laughed.
"You protect him even now, Seraphine?"
"My name is Mira."
"Of course. Another stolen name."
Silver light flickered in her eyes.
"Say one more word—"
"Mira," Toby whispered.
She stopped.
He gently moved past her and approached the broken throne.
His hands were trembling, but he forced himself to look at the skull.
"If you're the real Toby," he asked, "then who am I?"
The skull stared at him.
For the first time, its expression changed.
The mockery disappeared.
In its place came something almost human.
Pity.
"You're the one they made after I died."
The Hall of Forgotten Names fell silent.
Far above the mountain, thunder rolled across Sunspire.
Toby could hear the distant groaning of collapsing stone, but the words inside his head were louder.
After I died.
He looked toward Alaric.
"Father?"
The king closed his eyes.
Toby hated how desperately he wanted the man to deny it.
"Tell me he's lying."
Alaric slowly stood.
"I remember a child," he said. "A little boy with your eyes. Your mother's smile."
Toby swallowed.
"Me?"
The king looked at the skull.
"I remember holding him when he was born."
A tear slipped down his cheek.
"But I also remember a funeral."
Mira shook her head.
"No. Toby has been alive for ten years."
Alaric looked at her.
"Yes."
"Then how could he have died?"
The king approached the silver tablet.
Its surface began to glow.
"Because the records are not telling us the whole truth."
The skull laughed bitterly.
"Finally. Someone remembers how to ask the right question."
Alaric lifted his hand.
The broken crown above the throne began to rotate.
A beam of pale light descended onto the tablet.
New words appeared beneath Toby's name.
ORIGINAL HEIR: DECEASED
SECONDARY VESSEL: ACTIVE
SOUL TRANSFERENCE: INCOMPLETE
Mira stared at the final line.
"Incomplete?"
The skull's eyes burned brighter.
"Ask your precious queen what she did."
Toby frowned.
"Queen Elara?"
"No."
The skull's voice became colder.
"Ask the woman who used her grief to build a prison out of two children."
The silver tablets along the hall began to tremble.
One by one, they projected fragments of memories into the air.
A room filled with golden light.
A woman screaming.
A royal physician holding a motionless infant.
Queen Elara collapsed beside a cradle.
"No," she whispered. "Please."
The physician lowered his head.
"I'm sorry, Your Majesty."
Toby stared at the image.
The baby in the physician's arms had dark hair.
A tiny copper pendant rested against his chest.
Toby touched his own pendant.
The memory continued.
Elara seized the physician's arm.
"There must be something you can do."
"His heart has stopped."
"Then make it beat again!"
The physician began to cry.
"Your Majesty..."
"GET OUT!"
The physician retreated.
Elara remained beside the cradle, holding the dead infant against her chest.
For a long time, she did nothing but rock him.
Then a second figure entered the room.
A woman in a dark cloak.
Her face was hidden.
She carried a narrow silver box.
"Your Majesty," the stranger whispered, "there may be another way."
Elara looked up.
"What way?"
The stranger opened the box.
Inside floated a small golden flame.
"A soul can be recalled before it crosses the final threshold."
Elara stared at the light.
"Can you bring him back?"
The stranger hesitated.
"Not without a price."
"What price?"
The cloaked woman looked toward the dead child.
"A living vessel."
The memory disappeared.
Toby felt sick.
He looked at Mira.
Her face had gone completely white.
She understood before he did.
"A vessel," she whispered.
The skull's laughter echoed through the hall.
"Now you see."
Toby shook his head.
"No."
Mira reached for him.
"Toby—"
"No!"
He stepped backward.
"You said she made Mira to protect me."
Alaric remained silent.
"You said she was created from the memories of a dead princess."
Mira looked down.
The silver mark beneath her skin began to glow.
Toby stared at it.
Then at the black dragon mark on his own wrist.
Two children.
Two pendants.
Two vessels.
One dead prince.
His breathing quickened.
"Did she make both of us?"
No one answered.
And somehow, that silence was worse than any confession.
A heavy impact shook the hall.
The floor split near the entrance.
Black smoke poured through the cracks.
Caedric's voice echoed from the darkness.
"How touching. The royal family finally learns what it truly is."
Mira spun toward the doorway.
A tall figure emerged through the smoke.
Caedric no longer wore the ordinary armor of a king.
His body was wrapped in molten black metal. Two curved horns rose above his head, and skeletal wings stretched behind him.
The stolen dragon oath burned within his chest.
Toby immediately raised the Sunforged Blade.
Its golden light flickered weakly.
Caedric smiled.
"Still carrying that useless weapon?"
Toby stood his ground.
"Where's Vaelthar?"
The creature touched its chest.
"Closer than you think."
A faint amber glow pulsed beneath the armor.
Toby felt a terrible ache inside his wrist.
The dragon's presence was still there.
Faint.
Trapped.
Alive.
Caedric noticed his expression.
"Ah. You can still feel him."
He leaned forward.
"Would you like to hear him scream?"
Black fire erupted around his chest.
A distant roar echoed through the hall.
Toby flinched.
"STOP!"
Caedric laughed.
Mira stepped beside Toby.
Silver light spread across her fingers.
"Leave him alone."
Caedric looked at her.
"Careful, princess. Your last command nearly destroyed your own body."
"Then I'll make this one count."
She raised her hand.
The remaining silver tablets began to glow.
Hundreds of ancient names appeared above them.
Caedric's smile faded.
"Don't."
Mira narrowed her eyes.
"Afraid?"
"Those names are sealed for a reason."
She took another step forward.
"Then tell us why."
Caedric's expression hardened.
"Because the Hall of Forgotten Names was never built to preserve the truth."
Alaric froze.
"What?"
Caedric looked toward the throne.
"It was built to imprison it."
The broken crown suddenly began to spin faster.
The skull beneath the throne screamed.
Not in anger.
In pain.
Golden chains erupted from the pedestal and wrapped around its jaw.
The ancient voice thundered.
"UNAUTHORIZED DISCLOSURE."
Caedric staggered backward.
"Ah."
He smiled grimly.
"There it is."
The skull struggled against its chains.
"Let me speak!"
The ancient voice repeated its warning.
"UNAUTHORIZED DISCLOSURE."
Toby rushed toward the pedestal.
"What are you doing to him?"
Alaric grabbed his shoulder.
"Stay back!"
But Toby pulled away.
The skull's eyes were filled with terror.
Not hatred.
Not jealousy.
Terror.
And suddenly Toby remembered something.
When he had first approached the Sunforged Blade in the cathedral, it had not felt like a weapon choosing a conqueror.
It had felt warm.
Comforting.
Like someone reaching for him.
The same warmth now stirred beneath the skull's golden chains.
Toby looked at the Sunforged Blade.
Its runes were glowing.
He understood.
"The sword recognizes him."
Mira looked toward the skull.
"The original heir?"
Toby nodded.
Caedric's eyes narrowed.
"Don't interfere, boy."
Toby ignored him.
He approached the pedestal and raised the sword.
Alaric shouted.
"Toby!"
The blade struck the golden chains.
A burst of light filled the hall.
The chains shattered.
The skull fell from its pedestal.
Toby caught it before it struck the floor.
For one strange moment, the skull felt warm in his hands.
Its eyes opened.
"Thank you," it whispered.
Then the Hall of Forgotten Names went dark.
A woman's voice echoed through the darkness.
"Finally."
Toby froze.
He knew that voice.
It was the same voice that had spoken to him through the Sunforged Blade.
The voice claiming to be Queen Elara.
A golden flame appeared above the skull.
It grew taller.
Brighter.
Then took the shape of a woman.
Long dark hair.
Hazel eyes.
A white gown embroidered with golden roses.
Queen Elara.
But unlike the woman imprisoned beneath the cathedral, this figure was transparent.
Her body was made of light.
Toby stared at her.
"Mother?"
The woman looked at him.
Her expression filled with unbearable sadness.
"My little boy."
The skull began to glow.
A second light rose from its forehead.
For one heartbeat, Toby saw a newborn child sleeping in a cradle.
Then the image vanished.
Elara turned toward Alaric.
"My husband."
The king staggered forward.
"Elara?"
She nodded.
"I have waited so long."
Alaric reached toward her.
His hand passed through her shoulder.
He began to cry.
"I thought you were gone."
"I am."
The words silenced him.
Elara looked toward Toby.
"The woman beneath the cathedral carries a fragment of my memories, but she is not me."
Toby swallowed.
"Then what is she?"
"A guardian who sacrificed her identity to keep the Hollow King imprisoned."
Mira stepped closer.
"Why does she look like you?"
"Because she was created from my blood and bound to my final oath."
Caedric laughed from the shadows.
"How noble."
Elara turned toward him.
Her expression hardened.
"You have no place here."
Caedric spread his arms.
"And yet here I am."
A golden flame erupted between them.
Caedric recoiled.
For the first time, Toby saw genuine fear in his face.
Elara looked back toward the children.
"We have very little time."
Toby gripped the skull.
"Tell me who I am."
She closed her eyes.
Then she knelt before him.
"You are Toby."
He shook his head.
"That's not enough."
She looked into his eyes.
"You are the child I raised."
"But was I born?"
Elara's expression trembled.
"The boy whose body was buried died shortly after birth."
Toby stared at the skull.
"Then how am I here?"
She took a long breath.
"I called his soul back."
Mira covered her mouth.
Elara continued.
"The ancient magic could not restore his body. So I fashioned another from the living essence of the First Crown."
Toby felt cold spread through his chest.
"You made me."
"Yes."
"Like Mira?"
Elara nodded.
"But you were not empty vessels. Neither of you was merely a copy."
Toby looked down at his hands.
He remembered every bruise from the armory.
Every cold winter night.
Every laugh he had shared with Mira.
Had those moments belonged to someone real?
Or had they been borrowed from a child who died before he could speak?
Elara seemed to understand.
"Your memories are yours, Toby. Your choices are yours. The boy who died and the boy who stands before me are connected, but they are not the same life."
Toby's eyes filled with tears.
"Then why does the Hollow King want me?"
Elara hesitated.
And Toby knew there was another secret.
The broken crown began to crack.
Caedric stepped forward.
"Tell him, Elara."
She ignored him.
Caedric smiled.
"Tell your precious creation why the Hollow King needs his body."
Alaric raised his sword.
"Silence!"
Caedric laughed.
"You still don't understand, brother."
The king froze.
Caedric continued.
"The Hollow King cannot return in his original form. His body was destroyed when the First Crown was forged."
Elara's expression tightened.
"He needs a vessel," Toby whispered.
Caedric nodded.
"A vessel made from royal blood and ancient magic."
Mira grabbed Toby's hand.
"That's why he wants you alive."
"Yes," Elara said.
Toby looked toward the skull.
"Then why preserve the original body?"
Elara's golden form flickered.
"Because the skull carries the first imprint of your soul. It is an anchor. Without it, the Hollow King cannot complete the transfer."
Toby stared.
"So if we destroy it..."
Caedric lunged forward.
"NO!"
Elara raised her hand.
A wall of golden flame struck him across the chamber.
He crashed into a pillar.
Stone shattered.
Elara looked at Toby.
"Do not destroy it."
He froze.
"Why?"
"Because the skull is also the only thing preventing the Hollow King from entering your body now."
Toby's stomach dropped.
The same object that could complete the ritual was holding it back.
He looked at the skull in his hands.
Its eyes had closed.
For the first time, it seemed peaceful.
Mira whispered, "Then we protect it."
Elara nodded.
"And take it to the Ashen Forge."
Toby remembered Vaelthar's warning.
"The northern mountains."
"Yes."
"Before the third sunrise."
Elara looked surprised.
"Vaelthar told you?"
Toby nodded.
Her expression softened.
"Then he still remembers his oath."
A distant roar echoed through the darkness.
Caedric rose from the rubble.
His armor was cracked.
Black fire poured from his chest.
"Enough!"
He spread his skeletal wings.
The hall began to collapse.
Elara's golden form flickered.
"Toby! Take the western passage!"
A doorway appeared behind the throne.
Cold mountain air rushed through it.
Mira grabbed Toby's arm.
"Come on!"
Alaric rushed toward them.
But Caedric raised his hand.
A black chain shot across the chamber.
It wrapped around the king's chest.
Alaric cried out.
"GO!"
Toby stopped.
"Father!"
Alaric seized the chain with both hands.
"Take Mira and run!"
The boy hesitated.
He had only just found his father.
He could not lose him again.
Elara looked toward her husband.
Their eyes met.
For one brief moment, the years of separation seemed to vanish.
"Alaric," she whispered.
He smiled sadly.
"I remember everything now."
Then he turned toward Toby.
"Your mother loved you before you had a name."
The king pulled the black chain toward himself.
Caedric stumbled.
Alaric wrapped his arms around his brother.
Both men fell backward toward the collapsing floor.
Toby screamed.
"FATHER!"
The darkness swallowed them.
Mira dragged Toby through the western passage.
Behind them, the Hall of Forgotten Names collapsed.
Golden light burst through the doorway.
Then the mountain fell silent.
They emerged onto a narrow stone ledge overlooking Sunspire.
Night had fallen.
The cathedral was a shattered ruin.
Smoke rose from the city.
Far beyond the valley, the northern mountains stood beneath a sky filled with storm clouds.
Toby collapsed beside a broken stone wall.
The Sunforged Blade lay across his knees.
In his hands rested the golden-crowned skull.
Mira sat beside him.
Neither spoke for a long time.
Finally, Toby whispered, "Do you think he's dead?"
Mira looked toward the mountain.
"I don't know."
Toby closed his eyes.
He had found his father only to lose him again.
He had learned his mother was dead.
And he had discovered that his own existence was tied to a terrible purpose.
Mira gently touched his shoulder.
"You're still Toby."
He looked at her.
She gave him a small, trembling smile.
"The boy who promised me seven chickens."
Despite everything, he almost laughed.
Then the skull moved.
Its golden crown began to glow.
Toby froze.
The eyes opened.
But they were no longer hazel.
They were black.
A voice emerged from its mouth.
Deep.
Ancient.
Patient.
"Thank you for bringing me outside the prison."
Mira stood.
"Toby..."
The skull's jaw widened.
Black smoke poured from its mouth.
Toby tried to drop it.
He could not.
His hands were locked around the bone.
The dragon mark on his wrist turned black.
The Hollow King's laughter echoed across the valley.
"Elara told you the skull was an anchor."
Toby struggled desperately.
"Let go of me!"
The voice continued.
"She told you it prevented my return."
Mira raised her silver-lit hands.
"Toby, hold on!"
The skull's eyes burned.
"She told you the truth."
A black symbol spread across Toby's chest.
"But she did not tell you whose soul was trapped inside."
The boy stopped struggling.
"What?"
The skull whispered:
"The dead child was never your original self. He was the first vessel. And you, little prince, are the seventh."
Then six ghostly children appeared around the ledge.
All of them looked exactly like Toby.
All of them wore golden crowns.
And every one of them was missing its heart.
