Chapter 13 - The Truth Behind the First Betrayal

The stone coffin slammed shut with Mira trapped inside, and Toby heard something far worse than her screams.

He heard her laughing.

Not the familiar laughter of the girl who had shared stolen potatoes with him behind the armory.

This laughter was cold, ancient, and filled with a hatred that had survived seven hundred years.

"Mira!" Toby shouted.

He struck the coffin with the Sunforged Blade.

Golden sparks exploded across the stone.

The weapon that had shattered the Primordial Anvil could not leave even a scratch.

Again he struck.

And again.

"OPEN!"

Behind him, Captain Lysandra seized his shoulder.

"Your Highness, stop!"

Toby twisted away.

"She's in there!"

"I know!"

"Then help me!"

Lysandra looked toward the seven dragon statues surrounding the tomb.

Their stone eyes had begun glowing red.

"This is the First Grave," she whispered. "The ancient laws are stronger here than the Sunforged Blade."

Toby raised the sword again.

"I don't care about ancient laws!"

The blade struck the coffin.

A terrible cracking sound filled the chamber.

But it did not come from the stone.

It came from Toby's wrist.

He cried out.

The golden crown mark beneath his skin split open, spilling brilliant light across his arm.

Then the Hollow King's voice echoed from inside the coffin.

"Strike once more, little prince. Every blow brings me closer to freedom."

Toby froze.

Caedric stood near the shattered doorway, his black armor smoking.

For once, the former king was not smiling.

"He's telling the truth."

Toby turned toward him.

"Why should I believe you?"

"You shouldn't."

Caedric slowly removed his damaged helmet.

The face beneath still resembled King Alaric, but something about it was changing. His borrowed features were becoming thinner, revealing the pale, angular face of the prince who had stolen his brother's throne.

"I have lied to you, threatened you, and helped deliver your kingdom into darkness."

"Then why are you helping us?"

Caedric looked toward the coffin.

"Because I finally understand what the Hollow King intends."

Lysandra raised her remaining dagger.

"Speak."

Caedric swallowed.

"He never needed Toby to open the final prison."

Toby felt a chill.

"He needed Mira."

Inside the coffin, Mira was falling.

There was no stone beneath her feet.

No ceiling.

No walls.

Only darkness stretching endlessly in every direction.

Black chains surrounded her wrists, pulling her downward through a sea of forgotten memories.

Then the darkness opened.

She found herself standing inside a magnificent palace.

Golden sunlight streamed through towering windows. White roses covered the balconies, and far beyond them enormous dragons circled a city suspended above the clouds.

Mira recognized the place immediately.

Aurelian's palace.

But this time she was not watching through someone else's eyes.

She was standing inside a memory that belonged to her.

A little girl ran across the marble floor.

She wore a blue dress embroidered with silver stars.

Her dark hair streamed behind her.

"Father!"

A young man turned.

He was perhaps seventeen, with chestnut-brown hair and brilliant golden eyes.

His face resembled Toby's so closely that Mira's chest tightened.

Aurelian.

He caught the little girl and lifted her into his arms.

"Seraphine, how many times have I told you not to run near the balcony?"

The child laughed.

"Seven!"

"And how many times will I have to tell you again?"

"A thousand!"

Aurelian smiled.

For one heartbreaking moment, he looked exactly like Toby when he was happy.

Mira stepped forward.

"Who are you really?" she whispered.

The memory shifted.

The palace became dark.

Thunder shook the windows.

A woman lay upon a bed surrounded by golden candles.

Her silver hair spilled across the pillows.

Aurelian knelt beside her, holding her hand.

"Please," he whispered. "Stay with me."

The woman smiled weakly.

"Promise me you'll protect our daughter."

"I promise."

"And promise me something else."

"Anything."

"Do not use the First Flame to bring me back."

Aurelian went still.

The woman tightened her grip.

"Death is not an enemy you can defeat without destroying something else."

Tears slipped down his face.

"I cannot lose you."

"You are not losing everything."

She looked toward the doorway.

The little girl stood there, crying.

"You still have her."

Then the woman's eyes closed.

Aurelian screamed.

The memory shattered.

Mira fell to her knees.

She understood now.

Aurelian had not opened the forbidden gate to save Seraphine.

He had opened it to resurrect her mother.

But that was only the beginning.

Outside the coffin, Caedric approached one of the dragon statues.

"The Hollow King has spent centuries searching for the one memory that could undo his imprisonment."

Lysandra frowned.

"What memory?"

"The moment Aurelian willingly surrendered his heart."

Toby stared.

"The Hollow King said his love was torn away."

Caedric nodded.

"Because that was the story he preferred to remember."

Toby stepped closer.

"What really happened?"

Caedric looked toward the coffin.

"Aurelian opened the Gate of Returning to resurrect his wife. But death cannot be reversed without an exchange."

"What exchange?"

"One life for another."

Toby's stomach tightened.

Caedric continued.

"The gate demanded the soul of someone Aurelian loved more than himself."

Lysandra went pale.

"His daughter."

Caedric nodded.

"Aurelian refused. He tried to close the gate, but the power he had unleashed began consuming the palace."

Toby remembered the broken city.

The burning towers.

The dragons descending.

"And Seraphine died?"

"Yes."

Caedric looked toward the golden statues.

"But not before something else happened."

"What?"

The former king hesitated.

"She chose to save her father."

A deep silence settled over the chamber.

Toby shook his head.

"She was a child."

"Yes."

"She couldn't understand what she was doing."

Caedric's expression darkened.

"She understood enough to know he was dying."

The Hollow King's laughter echoed from the coffin.

"Tell him everything, Caedric."

The former prince closed his eyes.

Then spoke.

"The little princess stepped into the gate and offered her own soul."

Toby felt sick.

"To bring her mother back?"

"No."

Caedric looked directly at him.

"To save Aurelian."

Mira stood inside the burning palace.

The walls were collapsing.

Golden fire poured through the windows.

Aurelian lay unconscious beside the forbidden gate, black veins spreading across his chest.

The little Seraphine knelt beside him.

"Father?"

He did not answer.

She shook his shoulder.

"Father, wake up!"

A monstrous shadow rose from the gate.

It had no face.

No eyes.

Only an endless darkness filled with whispering voices.

One soul, it said.

The little girl turned.

"What?"

One soul freely given, and he shall live.

Seraphine looked toward her father.

His breathing was fading.

She began to cry.

"Will he wake up?"

Yes.

"Will he remember me?"

The darkness hesitated.

No.

The little girl's lips trembled.

She looked down at Aurelian.

Then she leaned forward and kissed his forehead.

"That's all right," she whispered.

She stood.

Held out her hands.

And stepped into the darkness.

Mira screamed.

"NO!"

The memory froze.

The little girl turned toward her.

Her silver eyes widened.

For the first time, she seemed to see Mira standing inside the vision.

"Who are you?"

Mira stumbled backward.

"I..."

The child studied her face.

Then smiled sadly.

"You look like me."

Mira began shaking.

"I'm the one they made from your memories."

The little girl looked thoughtful.

"Then you must know my father."

Mira nodded.

"His soul is inside a boy named Toby."

The child's expression brightened.

"Is he kind?"

Mira's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

"Does he laugh?"

"Sometimes."

"Does he have friends?"

Mira swallowed.

"He has me."

The little girl smiled.

"Good."

She stepped closer.

"Then he didn't lose everything."

Mira could barely speak.

"Why did you do it?"

The child looked toward Aurelian.

"Because he was my father."

"But you died."

The little girl nodded.

"I know."

"That wasn't fair."

"No."

The child's voice trembled.

"I was very frightened."

Mira knelt before her.

"Then why didn't you run?"

Seraphine looked at her for a long moment.

"Because he would have done the same for me."

Mira began to cry.

The child gently touched her cheek.

"Please don't cry."

Mira shook her head.

"I've spent my whole life wondering whether I'm real."

The little girl smiled.

"Do you feel sad?"

"Yes."

"Do you feel happy?"

"Sometimes."

"Do you love anyone?"

Mira thought of Toby.

Of the armory.

Of seven imaginary chickens.

Of the boy who had hugged her while a silver blade pierced his shoulder.

"Yes," she whispered.

The child nodded.

"Then you're real."

The palace disappeared.

Mira found herself standing before the forbidden gate.

The original Seraphine stood beside her.

Beyond the gate waited the Hollow King.

He appeared as an enormous figure wearing a crown of black thorns.

His body was made of shadow and broken golden armor.

"At last," he whispered.

The child stepped backward.

Mira moved in front of her.

"Stay away."

The Hollow King laughed.

"You still don't understand what happened, little guardian."

Mira raised her hands.

Silver fire gathered around her fingers.

"I understand enough."

"Do you?"

He lifted one enormous hand.

A memory appeared between them.

Aurelian standing before seven dragons.

Solkarion hovering above him.

The First Dragon's golden eyes burned with grief.

You opened the gate against my warning.

Aurelian stood motionless.

His daughter was dead.

His wife was dead.

His kingdom was burning.

He looked toward Solkarion.

Then kill me.

The dragon lowered his head.

I cannot.

Why?

Because you are my son.

Aurelian began to laugh.

It was a terrible sound.

Then make me forget.

Solkarion went still.

Aurelian looked toward the ruined palace.

Take my memories. Take my grief. Take whatever remains of my heart.

The First Dragon hesitated.

If I do this, what remains may become something I cannot control.

Aurelian closed his eyes.

Then imprison it.

The memory shattered.

Mira stared at the Hollow King.

"You asked to be divided."

The creature smiled.

"Yes."

"Solkarion didn't betray you."

"No."

The Hollow King leaned closer.

"He obeyed me."

Mira's chest tightened.

The terrible truth was becoming clear.

Aurelian had not simply been punished for trying to resurrect the dead.

He had willingly surrendered his memories and compassion because he could not bear what he had done.

The Hollow King was not merely his stolen grief.

He was the part of Aurelian that had chosen never to feel love again.

And the six vessels had been attempts to restore the missing soul.

Mira looked toward the little Seraphine.

"Then why do you need her?"

The Hollow King smiled.

"Because she is the only one who can return what I surrendered."

The girl stepped backward.

Mira raised her silver blade.

"She already gave her life for you."

"Indeed."

The creature's smile widened.

"And now she shall give it again."

Outside the coffin, Toby felt the golden crown mark on his wrist ignite.

He gasped.

A vision struck him.

Mira standing before the Hollow King.

A small girl behind her.

The forbidden gate opening.

And a terrible exchange about to begin.

"MIRA!"

He rushed toward the coffin.

Caedric seized his arm.

"Don't!"

Toby shoved him away.

"She's going to die!"

"Not if we break the memory seal."

"How?"

Caedric looked toward the seven dragon statues.

"Each represents one of the original oaths. The seventh belongs to Solkarion."

Toby followed his gaze.

The final statue stood behind the coffin.

Its golden eyes were glowing.

"What do I do?"

"Place the Sunforged Blade beneath its heart."

Lysandra grabbed Caedric's shoulder.

"That will summon the First Dragon into the chamber!"

"Yes."

"The forge will awaken completely!"

"Yes."

"And the Hollow King will sense the final oath!"

Caedric looked toward Toby.

"He already knows where we are."

Toby ran toward the statue.

Lysandra shouted after him.

"Your Highness!"

But the boy did not stop.

He drove the Sunforged Blade into the stone beneath the dragon's chest.

Golden light erupted.

The entire chamber shook.

Then a voice thundered from above.

"AURELIAN."

Toby looked up.

Solkarion's enormous golden eye appeared within the statue.

The First Dragon studied him.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Toby raised his chin.

"My name is Toby."

The dragon's eye narrowed.

"YOU CARRY MY SON'S SOUL."

"Maybe."

Toby tightened his grip on the sword.

"But I'm not him."

Solkarion went silent.

Toby continued.

"I know he was your son. I know he made terrible mistakes. And I know he lost someone he loved."

His voice trembled.

"But Mira is in there."

He pointed toward the coffin.

"And I won't let her die because of what happened seven hundred years ago."

The dragon studied him.

Then its enormous eye softened.

"YOU HAVE HIS COURAGE."

Toby shook his head.

"No."

He remembered the six ghostly children.

Their fear.

Their sacrifice.

And the little boy asking whether Mira would know they had been brave.

"I have theirs."

For the first time, Solkarion lowered his head.

Not before a king.

Before a child.

"THEN I SHALL HELP YOU."

Golden fire poured from the statue.

The coffin shattered.

Mira fell onto the stone floor.

Toby rushed forward.

"Mira!"

She looked up.

"Toby!"

He caught her in his arms.

For one precious moment, neither spoke.

They simply held each other.

Then Toby noticed the little girl standing behind her.

The original Seraphine.

Her body was made of pale silver light.

She looked at him with wonder.

"Father?"

Toby froze.

Mira gently shook her head.

"No, Seraphine."

The child looked confused.

Mira knelt beside her.

"This is Toby."

The girl studied him.

Then smiled.

"You have his eyes."

Toby swallowed.

"Hello."

She stepped closer.

"Are you kind?"

Toby looked toward Mira.

"I try to be."

The little girl nodded.

"Good."

Then the mountain trembled.

Black fire erupted from the broken coffin.

The Hollow King's enormous shadow rose toward the ceiling.

"ENOUGH!"

Solkarion roared.

Golden flames filled the chamber.

The Hollow King recoiled.

"FATHER!"

The word shook the mountain.

Solkarion's voice thundered in reply.

"YOU ARE WHAT MY SON CHOSE TO CAST AWAY."

The Hollow King's eyes burned.

"AND YOU LET HIM!"

The golden dragon fell silent.

For one moment, the anger between them seemed almost human.

Then Solkarion spoke.

"I SHOULD HAVE SAVED HIM FROM HIMSELF."

The Hollow King laughed bitterly.

"But you did not."

Golden fire collided with black shadow.

The chamber began collapsing.

Lysandra dragged Caedric toward the staircase.

"Toby! Mira! RUN!"

Toby seized Mira's hand.

The original Seraphine followed.

But as they reached the stairs, the Hollow King raised one enormous hand.

A black chain struck the little girl.

She cried out.

Mira turned.

"SERAPHINE!"

The child was dragged toward the darkness.

Toby lunged forward.

But the Sunforged Blade suddenly grew impossibly heavy.

Solkarion roared.

"THE FIRST FLAME IS CALLING YOU!"

Toby looked toward the sword.

Golden runes spread across its surface.

A voice whispered inside his mind.

The seventh vessel must choose.

The Hollow King laughed.

"Yes, little prince."

He held the original Seraphine above the abyss.

"Choose."

Toby stared.

The creature's voice became soft.

"Save the girl, and I will take the First Flame."

Mira shook her head.

"Toby, don't listen!"

"Or destroy the final oath," the Hollow King continued, "and the child will disappear forever."

Toby felt his heart breaking.

The original Seraphine looked toward him.

She was crying.

But she did not beg.

Instead, she whispered:

"Please don't let my father become a monster again."

Toby closed his eyes.

He remembered the six children.

Their sacrifice.

Their courage.

And something inside him finally became clear.

There was a difference between saving someone and refusing to let them go.

Aurelian had destroyed the world because he could not accept death.

Toby would not make the same mistake.

He raised the Sunforged Blade.

Golden fire erupted around him.

The Hollow King's smile vanished.

"What are you doing?"

Toby opened his eyes.

"I won't trade the world for one life."

The creature snarled.

"THEN SHE DIES!"

Toby shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward Solkarion.

"She already died."

The First Dragon went still.

Toby continued.

"And she deserves to rest."

He drove the sword into the ground.

The seventh dragon oath shattered.

Golden fire exploded through the chamber.

The Hollow King screamed.

The original Seraphine looked toward Mira.

For one final moment, the two girls smiled at each other.

Then the child's silver form dissolved into light.

Mira began sobbing.

"Goodbye," she whispered.

The Hollow King staggered backward.

His black armor cracked.

For a brief instant, Toby saw the face of Aurelian beneath the darkness.

A young man.

Golden eyes.

Filled with unbearable grief.

Then the Hollow King smiled.

"Thank you."

Toby froze.

The creature's body began glowing.

Not black.

Gold.

Solkarion roared in horror.

"TOBY! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?"

The shattered oath had not destroyed the Hollow King.

It had freed him from the last restraint preventing him from entering the First Flame.

The creature spread enormous wings of golden fire.

The mountain split open.

Deep beneath them, the Ashen Forge blazed.

The Hollow King laughed.

"Seven hundred years, Father."

He rose toward the flames.

"Seven hundred years of imprisonment."

Toby grabbed Mira's hand.

Lysandra screamed from the staircase.

"RUN!"

But the Hollow King's voice thundered across the mountain.

"YOU HAVE GIVEN ME EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED."

The golden fire swallowed him.

For one heartbeat, the world went silent.

Then the Ashen Forge exploded.

And from within its flames emerged a new creature.

Not a dragon.

Not a man.

A towering figure with six golden wings, a crown of black stars, and a heart made of living fire.

Solkarion fell to his knees.

His voice trembled.

"MY SON..."

The figure opened its eyes.

One golden.

One black.

Then it smiled.

"No, Father. Your son died seven hundred years ago. I am what comes after gods."

Above the kingdom, the sun turned black.
