Chapter 14 - The Man Behind the Monster
Richard Vale aimed the gun at his brother and smiled.
For the first time since Julian had known him, there was no warmth in Richard’s face.
No patient uncle.
No frightened survivor.
No guilty biological father.
Only calculation.
Thomas stared at him.
“You poisoned me.”
Richard’s smile faded.
“You poisoned everyone around you.”
“That wasn’t an answer.”
“Yes.”
Richard tightened his grip on the pistol.
“I poisoned you.”
Julian stepped slowly in front of Elena.
“Put the gun down.”
Richard looked at him.
“Move.”
“No.”
“Julian, this doesn’t concern you.”
Julian almost laughed.
“You’re my biological father, he raised me, my wife was hunted, my son was targeted, my mother was forced into hiding, Marcus’s daughter was kidnapped, and somehow this doesn’t concern me?”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“I did what I had to do.”
Thomas laughed.
Weakly.
Bitterly.
“You sound like me.”
“Shut up.”
“There it is.”
Thomas smiled at his brother.
“All those years pretending you were different.”
“I am different.”
“Of course.”
“You experimented on children.”
“And you poisoned your brother for seven years.”
Richard’s finger tightened near the trigger.
“I was stopping you.”
“No.”
Thomas shook his head.
“You were waiting for me to weaken.”
Silence.
Julian watched Richard carefully.
Thomas had found the wound.
“Why seven years?” Julian asked.
Richard looked at him.
“What?”
“If you wanted Thomas dead, why take seven years?”
Richard did not answer.
Marcus understood.
“Because he needed Thomas alive.”
Julian looked at him.
Marcus continued.
“Long enough to locate the trust.”
Thomas smiled.
“My son learns quickly.”
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“Don’t.”
Richard looked toward the archive.
“I needed the original documents.”
“For what?” Elena asked.
“The company.”
Julian stared at him.
Richard finally stopped pretending.
“Vale Global should have been mine.”
Thomas laughed.
Richard pointed the gun at him.
“You were always Edmund’s favorite.”
“Favorite?”
Thomas’s expression became almost incredulous.
“He experimented on me first.”
“And still gave you everything.”
“He tortured me.”
“He chose you.”
Thomas’s smile vanished.
There it was.
The oldest wound in the room.
Not money.
Not medicine.
Not inheritance.
A child who believed another child had been loved more.
Julian suddenly understood something terrible.
Thomas had spent his life becoming Edmund.
Richard had spent his life fighting Thomas.
Neither had escaped their father.
They had simply inherited different versions of him.
Richard looked at Julian.
“I watched Thomas turn you into another prisoner.”
“So you slept with his wife?”
Victoria flinched.
Richard’s face tightened.
“I loved your mother.”
“Then why did you leave her with him?”
“I was afraid.”
“Finally.”
Julian stepped closer.
“A truthful answer.”
Richard’s eyes filled with anger.
“You think courage is simple?”
“No.”
“I was twenty-seven.”
“So?”
“Thomas controlled everything.”
“And now you want me to believe you poisoned him for justice?”
Richard said nothing.
Julian shook his head.
“No. You did it because you wanted his chair.”
“That company belongs to you.”
“Then why manipulate the trust?”
“Because you were going to destroy everything.”
Julian stopped.
Richard continued.
“You said it yourself on the plane. You would destroy Vale Global if necessary.”
“Yes.”
“Do you have any idea what that means?”
“Apparently more than you.”
“Tens of thousands of employees.”
“Can be protected.”
“Pensions. Hospitals. Research programs. Governments. Entire industries depend on Vale capital.”
“And that justifies murder?”
“It justifies preserving the institution.”
Thomas laughed again.
Richard snapped.
“Shut up!”
Thomas’s expression was almost amused.
“You became Edmund after all.”
Richard fired.
The gunshot exploded through the archive.
Thomas jerked backward.
Victoria screamed.
Julian moved instinctively.
Thomas hit the floor.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Marcus rushed toward him.
“Thomas!”
Richard aimed again.
Julian tackled him.
The second bullet struck a filing cabinet.
They crashed to the floor.
Richard fought harder than Julian expected.
“You don’t understand!”
Julian struck his wrist against the concrete.
The gun skidded away.
Elena kicked it beneath a cabinet.
Richard punched Julian across the face.
Julian fell.
Richard lunged for the weapon.
Marcus intercepted him.
For one surreal moment, Thomas Vale’s two biological sons—one legal, one biological, depending on which truth mattered—fought the man who had secretly fathered Julian.
Richard slammed Marcus against the wall.
Julian rose.
Together they forced him down.
Camila grabbed the fallen gun.
“Enough!”
Everyone stopped.
She aimed at Richard.
“Move and I shoot.”
Richard stared at her.
“You won’t.”
Camila smiled without humor.
“Everyone keeps saying that to me today.”
He stopped moving.
***
Victoria knelt beside Thomas.
The bullet had entered high in his chest.
He was conscious.
Barely.
“You always did choose dramatic families,” he whispered.
Victoria pressed cloth against the wound.
“You need a surgeon.”
Thomas coughed.
“Apparently I need a psychiatrist.”
Victoria almost laughed.
Almost.
Julian crouched beside him.
Thomas looked up.
For the first time, Julian did not see his father.
He saw the man who had raised him.
That distinction hurt.
“Did you know?”
Thomas’s breathing was shallow.
“About Richard?”
“Yes.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Since you were seven.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because you were mine.”
Julian stared at him.
“Biology mattered enough for you to build the Continuity Project.”
“Not with you.”
Thomas opened his eyes.
“You were already my son.”
Julian had spent decades wanting those words.
Now they arrived from a dying man whose love had been indistinguishable from possession.
“You hated me.”
“No.”
“You punished me for existing.”
“Yes.”
Thomas’s honesty was brutal.
“Why?”
“Because every time I looked at you, I saw Richard.”
Julian swallowed.
“And every time you succeeded…”
Thomas coughed.
“I was proud.”
“Did you ever tell me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Edmund taught me pride made sons weak.”
Julian looked away.
Thomas whispered:
“I was wrong.”
Three words.
Too small for the damage.
Too late for forgiveness.
But perhaps not meaningless.
Julian looked back.
“Yes.”
Thomas smiled faintly.
“I know.”
***
Marcus found the emergency medical team Thomas had kept on-site.
Ironically, the people prepared to save Thomas through experimental treatment now fought to save him from Richard’s bullet.
He was taken upstairs under armed supervision.
Richard was restrained.
Camila accompanied the security team.
Before the elevator doors closed, Richard looked at Julian.
“Everything I did was for you.”
Julian stared at him.
“No.”
Richard’s face changed.
“You did it for the version of me you wanted to control.”
The doors closed.
Julian stood silently.
Elena came beside him.
“You okay?”
“No.”
“Good.”
He looked at her.
She touched his hand.
“I’d be worried if you were.”
He laughed softly.
Then remembered.
“Lily.”
Marcus was already moving.
***
They found Lily and Camille in the laboratory.
Lily ran toward Julian first.
“Julian!”
He crouched and caught her.
Then stopped.
Marcus stood several feet away.
This was his daughter.
Julian looked at Lily.
“Someone else wants to see you.”
She followed his gaze.
Marcus looked terrified.
More terrified than Julian had ever seen him.
Lily whispered, “Mr. Marcus?”
He crouched.
“Hi.”
“Are you sad?”
Marcus almost broke.
“A little.”
“Why?”
He looked at Camille.
She nodded through tears.
Marcus turned back to Lily.
“Because I found out something important today.”
“What?”
He struggled.
Julian knew that moment.
The impossible weight of discovering a child after years had already been stolen.
Marcus chose simplicity.
“I found out I’m your dad.”
Lily frowned.
“My daddy died.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
Camille knelt beside her.
“That’s what I told you.”
“Why?”
“Because I was scared.”
Lily looked between them.
“Is Mr. Marcus really my daddy?”
Camille nodded.
“Yes.”
Lily considered this with the seriousness only a child could give such news.
Then she walked toward Marcus.
She touched his cheek.
“You don’t look like a daddy.”
A laugh escaped him through tears.
“I can work on that.”
“Do you know bedtime stories?”
“No.”
“Pancakes?”
“I can learn.”
“Braids?”
Marcus looked terrified again.
Julian smiled.
“You’re on your own there.”
Lily looked back at Marcus.
Then hugged him.
He froze.
Slowly, he wrapped his arms around his daughter.
Camille began crying.
So did Elena.
Julian pretended not to.
***
Victoria led them back to Sublevel Four.
“We finish this.”
Julian looked at the archive.
“How?”
“Release everything.”
Marcus turned.
“Publicly?”
“All of it.”
Richard’s warning returned.
Vale Global.
Markets.
Employees.
Families.
Governments.
Julian looked at Elena.
“What do you think?”
“That depends.”
“On?”
“Whether you want to save your family name or your family.”
The answer became simple.
“Release it.”
Marcus nodded.
“We need copies first.”
They began transferring the archive.
Medical trials.
Patent fraud.
Illegal surveillance.
Shell corporations.
Payments.
Names.
Decades of crimes.
Then Marcus found another directory.
“Julian.”
“What?”
“Richard.”
A hidden financial ledger.
Payments from Richard to Thomas’s physician.
The poison.
Payments to private investigators.
Payments to BrightStar Hospitality.
Julian stared.
“BrightStar was Laurent-owned.”
“On paper.”
Marcus traced the transfers.
“Richard controlled it through a silent partnership.”
Elena went pale.
“He placed me at the hotel.”
“Yes.”
Julian understood.
Richard had wanted him to find Elena.
Why?
Marcus opened another message archive.
Richard’s communications.
Most encrypted.
One was readable.
SUBJECT E MUST BE REUNITED WITH J BEFORE DELIVERY. DISCOVERY OF PREGNANCY WILL DESTABILIZE T AND ACCELERATE SUCCESSION CONFLICT.
Julian read it twice.
“He used Elena to provoke Thomas.”
Victoria nodded.
“And you.”
Another message.
ENSURE J BELIEVES T ORDERED THE THREATS.
Elena covered her mouth.
The gray-haired man.
Thomas.
Had threatened her.
But perhaps not under his own plan.
Richard had manipulated Thomas too.
Marcus opened another file.
“Here.”
Audio recording.
Richard’s voice.
“Thomas must believe the child activates the trust. Julian must believe Thomas wants the child. Neither can know Marcus and Elena alone can authorize access.”
Julian felt cold.
Every layer had been engineered.
Thomas manipulating Richard.
Richard manipulating Thomas.
Both manipulating Julian.
And Elena trapped between them.
Elena looked at Victoria.
“Did anyone know the whole truth?”
Victoria shook her head.
“Isabel.”
“Anyone alive?”
“No.”
Marcus continued searching.
Then stopped.
“Wait.”
A recent access log.
Someone had opened the archive three days earlier.
Not Thomas.
Not Richard.
Not Victoria.
User:
I. MARQUEZ.
Elena stared.
“That’s impossible.”
Julian looked at her.
“Who?”
“My grandmother.”
“Isabel?”
“She died twenty-two years ago.”
Marcus checked the biometric verification.
“It wasn’t a password.”
“What was it?”
“Fingerprint.”
Elena’s face emptied.
“No.”
Julian almost laughed from exhaustion.
“Please don’t tell me we have another dead person.”
Victoria looked genuinely confused.
“Isabel died.”
“Did you see the body?” Julian asked.
Victoria hesitated.
Everyone groaned.
***
They located the access point.
Not remote.
Inside Saint Orison.
Sublevel Four.
Three days ago.
The archive contained a hidden corridor beyond the refrigerated storage room.
Victoria had never known it existed.
Marcus opened the concealed door.
A narrow passage led deeper underground.
The lights were already on.
Julian went first.
“Elena stays.”
She stared at him.
He corrected himself.
“Elena walks behind me.”
“Better.”
They reached another door.
No lock.
Julian opened it.
A small room.
A bed.
Books.
A table.
Fresh tea.
Someone lived there.
On the wall hung photographs.
Elena as a child.
Elena graduating.
Elena and Julian at their wedding.
A recent surveillance photograph of Daniel’s ultrasound.
Elena’s hands began shaking.
“No.”
An elderly woman sat beside the window.
Extremely old.
White hair.
Thin hands.
But her eyes were sharp.
Elena stopped breathing.
The woman looked up.
“Mi niña.”
Elena began crying before Julian understood.
“Grandma?”
Isabel Marquez smiled.
“You took long enough.”
Elena stumbled toward her.
“But you’re dead.”
“So I’ve been told.”
Julian closed his eyes.
Of course.
Isabel hugged Elena.
Then looked at Julian.
Her expression changed.
“You.”
Julian stepped forward.
“You know me?”
“I know exactly who you are.”
She looked at Victoria.
Then Marcus.
Then back at Julian.
“You opened the trust.”
“Yes.”
“Then we have very little time.”
“For what?”
Isabel looked toward the ceiling.
“Richard will escape.”
Marcus frowned.
“He’s under armed guard.”
“He has controlled Saint Orison longer than Thomas ever did.”
Julian’s phone rang.
Camila.
He answered.
“Julian.”
Her voice was frantic.
“What happened?”
“Richard escaped.”
Everyone looked at Isabel.
She did not seem surprised.
Julian tightened his grip on the phone.
“Where is he?”
“We don’t know.”
Then Camila said something worse.
“Thomas is gone too.”
“What?”
“Someone took him from the medical unit.”
Julian stared at Isabel.
She whispered:
“Richard needs Thomas alive.”
“Why?”
“Because the final transfer requires two Vale brothers.”
Julian frowned.
“Thomas and Richard?”
“No.”
Isabel looked toward Marcus.
“Thomas and his biological son.”
Marcus.
Julian’s blood turned cold.
Isabel continued.
“Richard doesn’t want Vale Global.”
A pause.
“He wants the Marquez research.”
“For money?”
“No.”
Her eyes filled with fear.
“To finish Edmund’s experiment.”
Elena stepped closer.
“What experiment?”
Isabel looked at her granddaughter.
“The one everyone misunderstood.”
She opened a drawer and removed a small glass vial.
Inside was a dark red sample.
“The compound wasn’t designed to cause heart disease.”
Julian stared.
“Then what was it designed to do?”
Isabel looked toward Daniel’s photograph on the wall.
“To stop aging.”
Silence.
Marcus almost laughed.
“That’s impossible.”
“I told Edmund the same thing.”
Isabel held up the vial.
“But after sixty years…”
She looked directly at Julian.
“…I am one hundred and twelve years old.”
No one spoke.
Isabel smiled sadly.
“And Richard has just kidnapped the only two people whose blood may allow him to reproduce it.”
Marcus understood first.
“Thomas.”
Isabel nodded.
Then looked at him.
“And you.”
Marcus’s face drained of color.
Julian turned.
Marcus was standing beside him.
Safe.
Then Marcus touched his neck.
A tiny dart protruded from his skin.
He looked confused.
“Julian…”
His knees buckled.
Julian caught him.
A hiss filled the corridor.
Gas.
Isabel shouted, “Run!”
The lights died.
Elena screamed.
Julian tried to lift Marcus.
Footsteps rushed toward them through the darkness.
A mask covered someone’s face.
Julian fought.
A needle entered his shoulder.
His strength disappeared.
The last thing he saw before losing consciousness was Richard stepping from the darkness.
Richard looked down at him.
Then smiled.
“Thank you for opening the archive, son.”
