Chapter 10 - The Brother in the Shadows
Marcus Reed stared at his own birth certificate as if it were a death sentence.
“No.”
No one answered.
On the screen behind him, Victoria Vale’s recorded image had frozen mid-frame. Beneath it, the document remained brutally clear.
Father: Thomas Vale.
Child: Marcus Reed.
Julian looked from the screen to the man who had stood beside him for twelve years.
Employee.
Chief of staff.
Friend.
Confidant.
And, if the document was genuine—
Brother.
“No,” Marcus repeated.
His voice was quieter now.
Richard moved toward him.
“Marcus—”
“Don’t.”
Richard stopped.
Marcus looked at him.
“You knew.”
It was not a question.
Richard said nothing.
That silence was enough.
Marcus crossed the room and struck him.
Richard crashed into the table.
“Marcus!” Julian shouted.
Marcus grabbed Richard by the shirt.
“You knew who my father was?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
Richard’s eyes closed.
“All your life.”
Marcus hit him again.
Julian pulled Marcus backward.
“Enough!”
“Get off me!”
“Not while Elena is giving birth ten feet away!”
That stopped him.
A cry came from the medical room.
Elena.
Julian immediately released Marcus.
For one second, the two men looked at each other.
Brother.
The word existed between them now, whether either wanted it or not.
Then Julian ran to Elena.
***
Dr. Ward had converted the examination room into an improvised delivery suite.
Elena’s face was soaked with sweat.
Her contractions were less than three minutes apart.
Julian took her hand.
“I’m here.”
“You left.”
“I know.”
“You keep doing that.”
Despite everything, he almost laughed.
“I’m sorry.”
“You should be.”
Another contraction hit.
Elena crushed his fingers.
Julian leaned close.
“Break every bone if you need to.”
“I might.”
“That’s fine.”
The contraction passed.
Elena opened her eyes.
“What happened?”
“Nothing that matters right now.”
“That means something terrible happened.”
“Marcus may be my brother.”
Elena stared at him.
“What?”
“I’ll explain later.”
“You people need a family tree and a detective.”
Julian actually laughed.
The sound surprised both of them.
For several seconds, the terror surrounding them loosened.
Then Dr. Ward’s expression changed.
“What?”
She adjusted the ultrasound.
“The marker.”
Julian’s smile vanished.
“What about it?”
“It’s changing.”
“Changing how?”
The tiny object had begun producing a faint pulse on the monitor.
Dr. Ward checked another reading.
“I need to deliver the baby quickly.”
“Is he in danger?”
“I don’t know.”
Julian hated those words.
He had heard them too many times tonight.
“What about Elena?”
“I don’t know that either.”
Elena looked at Julian.
“Then we keep going.”
He nodded.
No argument this time.
He stayed beside her.
***
In the adjoining room, Marcus stood alone.
Richard approached carefully.
“Your mother loved you.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You don’t get to tell me that.”
“She did.”
“Which mother?”
Richard stopped.
Marcus turned.
“The woman who raised me was Sarah Reed.”
“Yes.”
“She told me my father died before I was born.”
“She believed that.”
“Another convenient dead man.”
“She didn’t know about Thomas.”
Marcus stared at Richard.
“Who was my biological mother?”
Richard hesitated.
“The original Camille Laurent.”
Marcus looked toward the screen.
“The woman in the hospital video?”
“Yes.”
“How old was she when I was born?”
“Twenty-three.”
“And the woman outside with Thomas?”
“Her daughter.”
“My…”
“Half-sister.”
Marcus sat down.
For perhaps the first time Julian had ever seen, Marcus Reed looked completely lost.
Richard continued.
“The original Camille had two children.”
“Me and Camila?”
“No.”
Marcus looked up.
“Camila is not her daughter.”
“Then who is?”
“The woman Thomas has been calling Camille.”
Marcus frowned.
Richard sat opposite him.
“The Laurent family buried the original Camille’s identity after she disappeared. Years later, her daughter assumed the name Camille to investigate what happened to her mother.”
“So Camila Laurent?”
“Is exactly who she says she is.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“This is insane.”
“Yes.”
“Why was I given away?”
“To protect you.”
Marcus laughed without humor.
“There it is again.”
Richard frowned.
“What?”
“That phrase.”
Marcus looked at him.
“Everyone destroys someone’s life and calls it protection.”
Richard had no answer.
***
Elena screamed.
Julian held her shoulders.
“You’re doing it.”
“I hate you.”
“That’s reasonable.”
“I mean it.”
“I know.”
“You did this to me.”
Julian almost corrected her.
Considering everything they had learned, even that statement had become disturbingly complicated.
He wisely remained silent.
Dr. Ward looked up.
“One more.”
Elena cried out.
Then—
A sound.
Small.
Sharp.
Alive.
A baby crying.
Julian stopped breathing.
The entire world narrowed to that sound.
Dr. Ward lifted a tiny infant.
A boy.
Their son.
Elena began sobbing.
“Is he okay?”
Dr. Ward checked him quickly.
“He’s breathing.”
“Is he okay?”
“Yes.”
Julian’s knees weakened.
He had negotiated acquisitions worth billions without blinking.
Now the sight of a six-pound premature baby reduced him to tears.
“That’s him?”
Elena laughed through her crying.
“No, Julian. We found another baby.”
He looked at her.
Then they both laughed.
It was exhausted.
Terrified.
Beautiful.
Dr. Ward placed the baby briefly against Elena’s chest.
Elena touched his tiny face.
“Hi.”
Julian sat beside them.
He could not speak.
His son opened his mouth and cried again.
Julian touched one tiny hand.
Five fingers closed around one of his.
Something inside Julian broke open.
Not painfully.
Completely.
“My son.”
Elena looked at him.
“Our son.”
Julian kissed her forehead.
“Our son.”
For several seconds, there was no Thomas.
No Continuity Project.
No inheritance.
No lies.
Only three people.
Then Dr. Ward suddenly said, “Wait.”
Julian looked up.
“What?”
She was examining the placenta.
The marker.
It had detached.
Dr. Ward carefully lifted the tiny device with surgical forceps.
Marcus entered.
“Is that it?”
“Yes.”
He brought over an evidence container.
Dr. Ward dropped the device inside.
The moment it left Elena’s body, a tiny green light appeared.
Marcus stared.
“It’s transmitting.”
“Block it.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“It’s not using cellular frequencies.”
“Satellite?”
“No.”
Marcus examined the signal.
“Something else.”
The device flashed three times.
Then died.
Every computer in the safe house came back online simultaneously.
The countdown vanished.
A new message appeared.
HEIR CONFIRMED.
Julian looked toward his son.
Then another message appeared.
TRUST ACCESS AUTHORIZED.
Marcus stared.
“What trust?”
“The Vale-Marquez Trust,” Richard said.
A third message appeared.
PRIMARY BENEFICIARY VERIFIED.
Elena whispered, “Our baby?”
Richard nodded.
Then the screen changed.
A financial portal opened.
Numbers populated.
Corporate holdings.
Land.
Patents.
Voting shares.
Offshore assets.
Julian stared.
Marcus whispered, “My God.”
The trust was not worth millions.
It was worth billions.
And buried within its holdings was something even more dangerous.
Vale Global voting rights.
Twenty-eight percent.
Julian already controlled thirty-one percent.
Together—
“He gives you majority control,” Marcus said.
Julian understood.
Their newborn son had just changed the balance of one of the largest private business empires in the world.
Thomas had not been protecting the Vale succession.
He had been trying to control it.
Richard looked at the screen.
“If those shares transfer legally, Thomas loses any path back into Vale Global.”
“Good,” Julian said.
“No.”
Richard looked frightened.
“That makes the baby more dangerous to him.”
Elena tightened her arms around her son.
Julian moved closer.
“No one touches him.”
Then the lights died.
Again.
Marcus swore.
“Backup power should have activated.”
It did not.
Darkness filled the safe house.
A red emergency light appeared in the corridor.
Then came a sound Julian had not expected.
A baby crying.
But not Elena’s baby.
The cry came from outside the room.
Lily.
“Elena, stay here.”
Julian ran into the hall.
“Lily?”
No answer.
Marcus followed.
They reached the living room.
Empty.
The couch where Lily had been sleeping was vacant.
The front door stood open.
“No.”
Julian ran outside.
The driveway was empty.
No vehicles.
No Thomas.
No Lily.
Only a small stuffed rabbit lay on the gravel.
Marcus picked it up.
A note was pinned to its chest.
Julian tore it free.
YOUR SON FOR YOUR DAUGHTER.
Marcus read over his shoulder.
“Thomas took her.”
Julian’s face hardened.
“He wants the baby.”
Richard came outside.
“No.”
Julian turned.
“What?”
Richard stared at the note.
“He wants you to think he wants the baby.”
“What else would this mean?”
“Thomas had access to Lily for four years. If he wanted to hurt her, he already could have.”
Marcus understood first.
“This is leverage.”
“For what?” Julian asked.
Richard looked toward the house.
“The trust.”
Julian crumpled the note.
“He wants the shares.”
“That’s part of it.”
“Then what’s the other part?”
Richard hesitated.
“The trust doesn’t only contain assets.”
Julian’s patience disappeared.
“What else?”
“Records.”
“What records?”
“Everything Edmund Vale did.”
Richard looked toward Elena’s room.
“Illegal medical trials. Bribery. Patent theft. Human experimentation.”
Marcus stared at him.
“That could destroy the company.”
“It could destroy more than the company.”
Julian understood.
Names.
Politicians.
Doctors.
Executives.
Families.
Decades of secrets.
Thomas was not protecting money.
He was protecting history.
Julian looked down at the stuffed rabbit.
His daughter had been taken.
His newborn son was now the legal key to an empire.
His father was alive.
His mother might still be alive.
And somewhere inside the trust was enough evidence to destroy the Vale dynasty permanently.
Julian looked at Marcus.
“Can you locate Lily?”
“I’ll try.”
“Don’t try.”
Marcus met his eyes.
“Find her.”
Something had changed between them.
For twelve years, Marcus had answered Julian as an employee.
This time he answered differently.
“As her uncle?”
Julian looked at him.
The word surprised them both.
Then Julian nodded.
“As her uncle.”
Marcus took a breath.
“I’ll find her.”
***
Twenty minutes later, the trust portal requested a second authentication.
PRIMARY BENEFICIARY VERIFIED.
PATERNAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
Julian placed his hand on the biometric scanner connected to Marcus’s computer.
ACCESS DENIED.
He tried again.
ACCESS DENIED.
Marcus frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“Try another scanner.”
They did.
Same result.
Richard watched silently.
Julian noticed.
“What?”
Richard said nothing.
“What do you know?”
“Nothing.”
“Richard.”
“The trust may not define paternity biologically.”
Julian stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
Richard moved toward the screen.
“The trust was created decades ago. It might require legal lineage.”
“I’m Elena’s husband.”
“That should be enough.”
“But it isn’t.”
Marcus checked the code.
“Wait.”
He found something.
“The system is requesting a specific paternal identity.”
“Whose?”
Marcus decrypted the field.
Then stopped.
His face changed.
Julian felt dread immediately.
“What?”
Marcus turned the screen.
REQUIRED PATERNAL AUTHORIZATION:
MARCUS VALE.
Silence.
Julian stared at the name.
Then at Marcus.
“No.”
Marcus shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
Elena appeared in the doorway behind them, weak but standing.
Julian immediately moved toward her.
“You shouldn’t be up.”
“I heard you.”
She looked at the screen.
Her face drained of color.
Marcus whispered, “The system thinks I’m the baby’s father.”
Julian’s mind returned to Thomas’s accusation.
Julian isn’t the father.
But Camille’s letter had insisted the opposite.
The child is yours.
Two contradictory claims.
Both perhaps designed to hide something else.
Elena shook her head.
“No. Julian is the father.”
“I believe you,” Marcus said.
Julian did too.
This time without hesitation.
“Then why Marcus?” Elena asked.
Richard suddenly sat down.
Everyone turned.
His face had gone gray.
“Because we misunderstood the word paternal.”
Julian frowned.
“What?”
Richard looked at Marcus.
“The trust doesn’t want the baby’s father.”
He swallowed.
“It wants the surviving male representative of Thomas Vale’s generation of succession.”
Marcus stared at him.
“But that would still be Julian.”
“No.”
Richard shook his head.
“Not if the original family registry was altered.”
Julian felt cold.
“Altered how?”
Richard looked at him with something dangerously close to pity.
“Julian, there’s one final thing your mother discovered.”
“Stop calling every lie final.”
“This one concerns you.”
“What about me?”
Richard hesitated.
Then said:
“Thomas Vale is not your biological father.”
Silence.
Julian stared at him.
Marcus did too.
Elena whispered, “Then who is?”
Richard looked directly at Julian.
“Me.”
Julian did not move.
Richard’s eyes filled with tears.
“Julian…”
He could barely speak.
“I’m your father.”
