Chapter 2 - The Nightmares in Level P4
Claire was mid-toast, lifting her crystal flute high to celebrate her promotion to managing partner. "To family harmony and the sacrifices that make true success possible," she declared with that signature poised smile that had fooled everyone in our social circle for three years.
My mother smiled proudly and touched Claire's forearm. "You've worked so hard for this, Claire darling. A true blessing to our family."
I walked straight to the table. The sudden shadow of my silhouette falling across their white linen tablecloth caught my brother-in-law's eye first. His smile faltered. Claire turned, her face instantly draining of color, though she scrambled to recover her polished demeanor.
"Sarah? What on earth... why aren't you at home? Is Lily sleeping?" Claire whispered, her voice dropping into a tense hiss as other patrons turned to look.
"Lily isn't sleeping, Claire. She's in the ER triage unit right now with IV fluids running through her arm because of extreme dehydration and mild hypothermia," I said, my voice steady, dangerously quiet.
