Chapter 10 - The Last Mercer Lie

For several seconds, Caroline heard nothing except her own breathing.

Rebecca hadn't given birth to her.

Eleanor had.

And the baby Rebecca had delivered that night was Juliette.

"No."

The word came automatically.

Douglas remained on the phone.

"Caroline—"

"No."

Thomas Vance lowered his eyes.

That was the confirmation Caroline didn't want.

She turned toward him.

"You knew."

Thomas said nothing.

"Look at me."

Slowly, the old detective raised his head.

"You knew."

"Yes."

Holloway stepped backward as if someone had struck him.

"What did you say?"

Thomas looked at him.

"Rebecca's daughter was Juliette."

Holloway's face emptied.

"No."

Marcus watched his father carefully.

Thomas continued.

"Douglas changed the maternity records. Rebecca was told her baby had been transferred. Eleanor was told Caroline's birth had been registered privately."

Holloway grabbed the edge of a table.

"Juliette..."

His daughter.

Not Caroline.

Caroline almost laughed at the cruelty of it.

Twenty-seven years of secrets had not merely hidden the truth.

They had rearranged an entire family.

"Then Adrian?" Caroline asked.

Thomas hesitated.

"Not Juliette's father."

Another lie collapsed.

"Then why did everyone believe he was?"

"Because Douglas needed them to."

Douglas remained silent on the phone.

Caroline's voice hardened.

"Explain."

Douglas finally spoke.

"Adrian's DNA was substituted into the fertility records."

"Why?"

"To create a legal claim."

"To Vale Industries?"

"Yes."

Caroline closed her eyes.

There it was.

Money.

Power.

Inheritance.

Underneath every death, every falsified document, every destroyed relationship, Douglas Mercer had been moving ownership around like pieces on a chessboard.

"And my father?"

Caroline asked.

Nobody answered.

She looked at Thomas.

"Who is my biological father?"

Thomas glanced toward the phone.

"Douglas should tell you."

Caroline's stomach tightened.

Douglas's voice came quietly.

"I am."

She froze.

For once, nobody contradicted him.

"You?"

"Yes."

Caroline gripped the phone.

"You are my biological father."

"Yes."

"And Eleanor was my biological mother."

"Yes."

Something inside Caroline finally settled.

Not healed.

Settled.

The truth was almost painfully ordinary compared with the elaborate lies built around it.

She had been Douglas and Eleanor Mercer's biological daughter all along.

Rebecca's daughter was Juliette.

Holloway's daughter.

Two girls.

Two mothers.

Two fathers.

Records deliberately exchanged until nobody knew which child belonged to whom.

"Why?" Caroline whispered.

Douglas took a long breath.

"Because Adrian discovered what I was doing with Vale Industries."

Adrian.

The archive.

The succession documents.

Caroline understood only pieces.

Douglas continued.

"Eleanor was Adrian's half sister. Their father never publicly acknowledged her, but the original Vale trust did."

Thomas walked toward Caroline.

"That is what the missing device proves."

Caroline looked at him.

"If Eleanor was a Vale..."

"You are a Vale descendant."

"And Juliette?"

Thomas looked toward Holloway.

"She isn't."

Holloway closed his eyes.

The entire foundation shifted again.

Douglas had fabricated Juliette's connection to Adrian to create a controllable heir.

Caroline was the real blood descendant through Eleanor.

"So the fortune belongs to me."

"No," Thomas said.

Caroline frowned.

Douglas answered through the phone.

"That's the final lie."

Caroline was too exhausted even to react.

"What now?"

"The original trust doesn't transfer ownership to a descendant."

"Then what does it do?"

Thomas answered.

"It dissolves the controlling shares if an heir is deliberately concealed."

Marcus understood first.

"So nobody gets it."

Thomas nodded.

"If the original document becomes public, control of Vale Industries passes into an independent foundation."

Caroline stared at him.

Twenty-seven years.

People had lied, killed, kidnapped, manipulated children, falsified deaths and destroyed families...

For something none of them could ultimately own.

She began laughing.

Marcus looked at her carefully.

"Caroline?"

The laughter turned into tears.

"All of this."

She wiped her face.

"For nothing."

"No," Thomas said.

"For power."

That was worse.

A gunshot exploded through the phone.

Caroline froze.

"Douglas?"

Silence.

Then Rebecca screamed somewhere on the line.

Caroline shouted, "Douglas!"

Another gunshot.

The call disconnected.

Holloway moved first.

"Mercer estate."

They ran.

---

By the time they returned, smoke was rising above the mansion.

Caroline stopped outside.

Fire.

Again.

For half a second, she couldn't move.

Marcus grabbed her hand.

"Look at me."

She did.

"This isn't the beach house."

Her breathing quickened.

"This isn't that night."

Another window shattered.

Caroline looked toward the flames.

Juliette was inside.

She pulled her hand free.

And ran toward the house.

"Caroline!"

Marcus followed.

The underground medical room was empty.

Blood covered the bed.

"Juliette!"

No answer.

Then Caroline heard coughing.

She followed the sound into the service corridor.

Rebecca was lying against the wall.

Blood covered her shoulder.

Holloway dropped beside her.

"Rebecca."

Her eyes opened.

"Richard?"

For all the hatred between them, something softened when she recognized him.

"Where's Juliette?"

Rebecca pointed toward the archive chamber.

"Douglas took her."

"Why?"

"The device."

Caroline ran.

The archive door stood open.

Inside, Douglas leaned against a desk.

He had been shot in the abdomen.

Juliette lay nearby, barely conscious.

And in Douglas's hand was a tiny black object.

The storage device.

Caroline stopped.

"You had it."

Douglas nodded.

"All these years."

"Give it to me."

He looked at the device.

"If this becomes public, everything ends."

"Good."

"Thousands of people lose control of companies, trusts, estates."

"Not my problem."

"Markets collapse."

"Not my problem."

"People will come after you."

Caroline stepped closer.

"They already burned me alive."

Douglas looked at her scars.

For once, he had no answer.

Juliette stirred.

"Caroline..."

Caroline rushed toward her.

Douglas raised the gun.

Marcus entered behind them and aimed at him.

"Drop it."

Douglas smiled weakly.

"Detective Vance."

"Former detective."

"Like father, like son."

"Drop the gun."

Douglas looked at Caroline.

"You want the truth?"

"I have enough."

"No one ever has enough."

He held up the storage device.

"This contains everything."

Caroline stared at it.

"Then give it to me."

Douglas shook his head.

"You still think truth fixes things."

"No."

Caroline looked at Juliette.

"I think lies destroy them."

Something changed in Douglas's face.

Perhaps he finally understood.

Or perhaps blood loss had simply exhausted him.

His gun lowered.

Caroline approached.

"Give it to me, Dad."

The word affected him.

His eyes filled with tears.

Despite everything, he had raised her.

Despite everything, some part of Caroline still remembered riding on his shoulders when she was six.

Humans were cruel that way.

Love didn't disappear merely because someone deserved hatred.

Douglas placed the device in her palm.

Then a gunshot erupted.

His body jerked.

Caroline screamed.

Douglas collapsed against her.

Behind him stood Evelyn Shaw.

Smoke curled from her pistol.

Marcus aimed at her.

"Evelyn!"

She was crying.

"For Laura."

Douglas fell.

Caroline caught him.

Blood spread across her hands.

"Stay with me."

Douglas looked almost amused.

"After everything?"

"Don't make me forgive a dead man."

He coughed.

"You sound like Eleanor."

Caroline's tears fell onto his face.

"Was she afraid?"

Douglas knew what she meant.

At the end.

"No."

"Did she really ask you to help her die?"

A long pause.

"No."

Caroline closed her eyes.

One final lie exposed.

"I killed her," Douglas whispered.

"Why?"

"She was going to expose everything."

Caroline looked at him.

"Then you murdered the only person who actually loved you."

Douglas's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

His breathing stopped moments later.

Caroline remained beside him.

She didn't forgive him.

She didn't need to.

---

Three hours later, Juliette was in surgery.

Rebecca survived.

Evelyn surrendered to Marcus without resistance.

Holloway sat outside Juliette's operating room, staring through the glass doors at the daughter he had discovered only hours earlier.

Adrian Vale was transported to a hospital under federal protection.

Thomas Vance disappeared before federal agents arrived.

Marcus pretended not to know how.

Caroline suspected otherwise.

At sunrise, she stood alone outside the hospital.

The storage device rested in her hand.

Marcus joined her.

"What are you going to do with it?"

"Release it."

"All of it?"

"The victims and protected identities stay sealed."

Marcus nodded.

"And everything else?"

"Public."

"Douglas said people will come after you."

Caroline looked toward the sunrise.

"They already did."

Marcus almost smiled.

Her phone rang.

Hospital.

Caroline answered immediately.

"Yes?"

A nurse spoke.

"Ms. Mercer? Your sister is awake."

Caroline closed her eyes.

Alive.

Juliette was alive.

For the first time in years, that mattered more than the truth.

"I'll be there."

She ended the call.

Then another notification appeared.

An email.

No sender.

No subject.

One attachment.

Caroline stopped walking.

Marcus noticed.

"What?"

She opened it.

A photograph.

Recent.

Taken only hours earlier.

Thomas Vance entering a private aircraft.

Beside him was Lillian Vale.

And a third person.

A woman.

Caroline enlarged the image.

Her heart stopped.

"No."

Marcus looked over her shoulder.

His expression changed.

"That's impossible."

Caroline knew the woman.

She had just spent an entire night hearing about her death.

She had watched footage of Douglas injecting her.

She had mourned her for eleven years.

But the woman in the photograph was older.

Gray-haired.

Thin.

Alive.

On her wrist was a bracelet Caroline remembered from childhood.

Caroline's hands began trembling.

Beneath the photograph was one sentence.

**DOUGLAS LIED ABOUT ONE LAST DEATH.**

Marcus whispered her name first.

"Eleanor."

Caroline stared at the woman she had called Mother.

The supposedly murdered Eleanor Mercer was alive.
