Chapter 5 - The Son Between Two Dynasties
Julian Sterling kept the pistol pointed at Chloe while the blue metal box rested less than three feet from Alexander.
“Go on, Richard,” Julian said. “Tell him who my real father is.”
Nobody moved.
The storage unit suddenly felt too small for the secrets inside it.
Alexander stared at the man he had called his younger half-brother for twenty-nine years.
Julian looked almost exactly as he always did—expensive coat, carefully styled dark hair, effortless confidence—but Alexander could no longer see anything familiar in him.
His eyes dropped to the silver crest hanging around Julian’s neck.
A serpent wrapped around a crowned rose.
The Sinclair insignia.
“Put the gun down,” Alexander said.
Julian smiled.
“You still think you’re in charge.”
“You’re pointing a weapon at an unarmed woman.”
“I’m pointing it at the only person in this room everyone suddenly cares about.”
Chloe’s face hardened.
“I’m getting very tired of being used as leverage.”
Julian glanced at her.
For half a second, amusement crossed his face.
“You really are Evelyn’s daughter.”
Richard finally spoke.
“Julian, whatever William told you—”
“Don’t.”
The smile vanished.
“You don’t get to say his name like you knew him.”
Richard stared at him.
“I knew William longer than you did.”
Julian’s expression became dangerous.
“That is not the name I meant.”
Silence.
Alexander felt something cold settle inside him.
He looked at Richard.
“Tell me.”
Richard tightened both hands around his cane.
“Alexander—”
“Tell me who Julian’s father is.”
Richard closed his eyes.
When he opened them, he looked at Julian.
“Adrian Sinclair.”
Chloe inhaled sharply.
Alexander said nothing.
The name meant something.
A photograph in an old newspaper.
A funeral his father had attended without explaining why.
A man Alexander had been taught to remember as another Sinclair enemy.
“Your son,” Alexander said.
Richard nodded.
“My only son.”
Julian’s gun remained steady.
Chloe looked at Richard.
“So Julian is your grandson too?”
“Yes.”
Alexander turned toward Julian.
“And my mother?”
Richard answered.
“Catherine Sterling was Julian’s mother.”
Alexander’s face emptied of emotion.
His mother.
Richard’s son.
A child hidden inside the Sterling family.
It was absurd.
And yet, after everything that night, absurdity had become dangerously close to evidence.
“You expect me to believe my mother had an affair with Adrian Sinclair?”
Richard looked at him.
“It wasn’t an affair.”
“What was it?”
“They loved each other.”
Alexander laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“My father would have known.”
“He eventually did.”
Julian’s eyes sharpened.
“And that,” he said, “is where the bodies began.”
Chloe looked toward him.
“What happened to Adrian?”
Julian’s jaw tightened.
Richard answered.
“He died when Julian was two.”
“How?”
“A boating accident.”
Julian laughed bitterly.
“Another accident.”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“It was never proven otherwise.”
“Because William controlled the investigation.”
Alexander looked at Julian.
“You believe Father killed Adrian.”
“I know he did.”
“You were two.”
“But Mother wasn’t.”
Alexander froze.
Julian stepped closer.
“Catherine kept records.”
“The blue box?”
Julian glanced down at it.
“Some of them.”
Alexander’s eyes narrowed.
“If you already know what’s inside, why steal it?”
“I don’t know everything.”
“So you came here with a gun.”
“I came because Thomas told me Chloe would lead me to it.”
Marcus finally spoke.
“My father told you?”
Julian looked at him.
“Yes.”
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“You’ve been communicating with Thomas Vale.”
“For years.”
The betrayal landed differently.
Not because Marcus had done anything.
Because someone had used his dead father’s identity as a weapon while keeping him ignorant.
Marcus took one step forward.
Julian immediately shifted the pistol toward him.
“Don’t.”
Marcus stopped.
“Where is my father?”
“Alive.”
“I saw that.”
“Then congratulations. You know more about your family than you did this morning.”
Marcus’s jaw clenched.
“Where is he?”
“At the house.”
“With Evelyn?”
“Yes.”
“And William?”
Julian’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
Alexander noticed.
“You didn’t know he was there,” Alexander said.
Julian looked at him.
“Don’t pretend you can still read me.”
“I raised you half the time.”
“No. You managed me.”
“I protected you.”
“From what?”
“From Father.”
The answer came too quickly to be calculated.
For the first time, Julian’s confidence cracked.
Alexander remembered nights when William’s temper had filled the Sterling mansion.
Broken glasses.
Locked doors.
Julian hiding in Alexander’s bedroom at eleven years old, insisting he had only come because the thunder was loud.
There had been no thunder.
Alexander had known.
He had simply never made Julian admit it.
Something painful moved between them.
Then Julian looked away.
“Your protection always came with conditions.”
“What conditions?”
“That I remain beneath you.”
Alexander stared at him.
“That’s what you think?”
“That’s what I know.”
Richard interrupted.
“This is what William wanted.”
Julian turned the pistol toward him.
“Careful.”
“He raised both of you to distrust the wrong people.”
“And you’re the trustworthy one?”
“No.”
Richard’s answer surprised everyone.
“I failed my family long before either of you were old enough to understand it.”
His eyes moved toward Chloe.
“I chose power when I should have chosen my children.”
Then toward Julian.
“And pride when I should have protected Adrian.”
Julian’s hand trembled.
Barely.
But Alexander saw it.
Richard continued.
“Your father came to me three weeks before he died.”
“Stop.”
“He wanted to leave.”
“I said stop.”
“He wanted to take Catherine and both boys somewhere William could not reach.”
Alexander’s breath caught.
“Both boys?”
Richard looked at him.
“Adrian intended to take you too.”
Alexander stared.
“Why?”
“Because Catherine refused to leave without you.”
Something shifted inside Alexander.
For years, William had told him his mother had become unstable before her death.
Weak.
Disloyal.
Selfish.
Yet apparently Catherine had been planning an escape.
And she had refused to abandon him.
Julian’s gun lowered slightly.
Richard saw it.
“Your father loved your mother.”
Julian’s eyes glistened.
“And William murdered him.”
“I don’t know.”
“You always say that when the truth becomes inconvenient.”
Richard flinched.
Chloe slowly moved closer to Julian.
Alexander immediately noticed.
“Chloe.”
She ignored him.
“Julian.”
His eyes flicked toward her.
“What?”
“You said Thomas told you I would lead you to the box.”
“Yes.”
“Then why was someone already searching this unit before we arrived?”
Julian frowned.
“I sent no one.”
Alexander looked at him sharply.
“You didn’t break in?”
“No.”
Marcus glanced around.
“Then someone else got here first.”
Julian looked at the blue box.
“I found it outside.”
Chloe stared at him.
“What?”
“It was sitting beside the emergency exit.”
Alexander’s suspicion intensified.
“Waiting for you.”
Julian’s expression changed.
He had not considered that.
Marcus said, “Someone wanted you holding it when we arrived.”
The realization spread through the room.
Julian looked at the pistol in his own hand.
Then at Alexander.
A perfect scene.
The unstable younger brother.
A weapon.
The stolen evidence.
Richard Sinclair present.
Chloe present.
If police arrived now—
Sirens sounded outside.
Everyone froze.
Marcus swore under his breath.
Julian’s face went pale.
Alexander looked toward the corridor.
“How long?”
Marcus checked his phone.
“Police dispatch received an anonymous report six minutes ago.”
“What report?”
“Armed kidnapping.”
Chloe looked at Julian.
“They set you up.”
Alexander held out his hand.
“Give me the gun.”
Julian laughed nervously.
“So you can hand me to the police?”
“So I can keep you from doing something stupid.”
“You always think I’m stupid.”
“No.”
Alexander stepped closer.
“I think you’re angry.”
Another step.
“And angry men holding guns make mistakes.”
Julian’s eyes moved toward Chloe.
Then Richard.
Then back to Alexander.
For one second, he looked like the frightened boy who had once hidden in Alexander’s room.
He lowered the weapon.
Alexander took it.
“Marcus. Get everyone out.”
“What about the box?”
Alexander picked it up.
“We take it.”
Richard shook his head.
“Not here.”
Alexander looked at him.
“You don’t get a vote.”
They moved toward the rear emergency exit.
Marcus led them through another corridor as police entered the main building.
Chloe stayed close to Alexander.
Julian walked behind them.
Richard struggled to keep pace.
They reached the loading area.
Sterling security vehicles were waiting.
Then a shot cracked through the darkness.
Richard collapsed.
“Down!”
Marcus drew his weapon.
Alexander pulled Chloe behind a concrete pillar.
Julian rushed toward Richard.
“Richard!”
Blood spread across the old man’s coat.
The bullet had struck his side.
“Ambulance!” Chloe shouted.
“No ambulance,” Richard gasped.
“You’ve been shot.”
“They’ll know where I am.”
“I don’t care.”
Chloe pressed both hands against the wound.
“You’re going to bleed to death.”
Richard grabbed her wrist.
“The box.”
Alexander looked down.
He still held it.
“Open it.”
“Not here.”
“Now.”
Another shot struck concrete nearby.
Marcus fired toward a rooftop.
“Move!”
Alexander carried the box into the armored SUV while Julian and Chloe helped Richard inside.
The vehicles accelerated away.
Chloe continued applying pressure to Richard’s wound.
“We need a hospital.”
Richard shook his head.
“Private clinic,” Alexander ordered the driver. “Sterling medical facility.”
Richard laughed weakly.
“Trusting Sterling doctors. How poetic.”
“Save your energy.”
Alexander placed the blue box on the floor.
There was a small brass lock.
Chloe pulled Emily’s key from her pocket.
Everyone looked at it.
She inserted the key.
It turned.
The lid opened.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Photographs.
A cassette tape.
Several old computer disks.
And a sealed envelope marked:
**CATHERINE STERLING — CONFESSION**
Alexander stared at his mother’s handwriting.
Julian whispered, “Open it.”
Alexander did.
The first page was dated three days before Sinclair House burned.
He read silently.
Then stopped.
Chloe touched his arm.
“What does it say?”
Alexander continued.
His mother described a secret financial network created decades earlier by senior members of both families.
Sterling money.
Sinclair political influence.
Shell corporations.
Bribery.
Blackmail.
Illegal surveillance.
People had been destroyed to keep it hidden.
But Catherine and Evelyn had discovered something worse.
A program identified only by a name:
**JANUS.**
“What is Janus?” Chloe asked.
Alexander searched the remaining pages.
The answer was not there.
Instead, Catherine had written:
*William believes Janus protects the Sterling legacy.*
*My father-in-law believed it protected the country.*
*Richard Sinclair believes Janus died years ago.*
*They are all wrong.*
Richard, barely conscious, opened his eyes.
“Janus?”
Fear appeared on his face.
Real fear.
“You know it,” Alexander said.
Richard whispered, “Burn the box.”
Julian stared at him.
“What?”
“Burn everything.”
Chloe pressed harder against his wound.
“Why?”
Richard looked at her.
“Because Janus is why your mother disappeared.”
Alexander searched deeper inside the box.
Beneath the documents was a smaller envelope.
No name.
Only a date.
June 14, 1999.
Chloe’s birthday.
He opened it.
Inside was a hospital document.
A neonatal record.
Chloe leaned closer.
“What is that?”
Alexander read the names.
Mother: Evelyn Sinclair.
Infant: Charlotte Sinclair.
Then another document.
Same date.
Same hospital.
A second infant.
Alexander frowned.
Chloe noticed.
“What?”
He read it again.
There was no mistake.
A second baby had been born that night.
Male.
Chloe stared at him.
“My mother had twins?”
Richard began struggling to sit up.
“No.”
Chloe turned.
“The document says—”
“No!”
Richard grabbed Alexander’s sleeve with surprising strength.
“That record was destroyed.”
Julian leaned forward.
“You knew.”
Richard’s breathing became shallow.
Alexander looked at the second record.
The infant’s given name had been removed.
But the paternal information remained.
Father:
**Adrian Sinclair.**
Julian went completely still.
“No.”
Alexander looked at him.
Adrian Sinclair was supposedly Julian’s father.
But Adrian had allegedly died years before Chloe was born.
“That’s impossible,” Chloe whispered.
Richard closed his eyes.
Alexander looked again at the date.
Then at Julian.
Then at Chloe.
Something about the entire family chronology had been deliberately falsified.
“Who was the boy?” Alexander asked.
Richard refused to answer.
Julian grabbed him.
“Who was he?”
Chloe pulled Julian away.
“Stop! He’s bleeding.”
Richard coughed.
Blood appeared at the corner of his mouth.
Then he whispered something.
Alexander leaned closer.
“What?”
“The twins were separated.”
Chloe’s eyes widened.
“Why?”
“To hide Charlotte.”
“From William?”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
“Then from whom?”
Richard’s gaze moved toward the blue box.
“Janus.”
His eyes closed.
Chloe checked his pulse.
“He’s losing consciousness.”
Alexander reached deeper into the box.
There was one final object beneath the medical records.
A recent photograph.
Not twenty-seven years old.
Recent.
Chloe took it.
Two people stood outside a building.
One was Evelyn.
The other was a man approximately Chloe’s age.
On the back, someone had written:
**CHARLOTTE AND SUBJECT B MUST NEVER MEET.**
Chloe turned the photograph over again.
“Subject B?”
Alexander looked at the man.
There was something familiar about his face.
Marcus leaned back from the front seat.
His expression changed.
“I know him.”
Everyone looked at him.
“Who?”
Marcus hesitated.
“He works for Sterling Global.”
Alexander’s blood went cold.
“Name.”
Marcus answered.
“Dr. Nathan Reed. Biomedical research division.”
Alexander knew the name.
Nathan Reed was one of Sterling Global’s most brilliant genetic researchers.
Chloe stared at the photograph.
“My brother works for Alexander?”
Marcus shook his head slowly.
“There’s more.”
He opened Sterling Global’s internal database on his laptop.
“Nathan Reed’s personnel file says he was born June 14, 1999.”
Chloe stopped breathing.
Alexander stared at the screen.
Same birthday.
Same age.
Same mother, if the documents were genuine.
Marcus scrolled farther.
Then suddenly stopped.
“What?”
Alexander leaned forward.
Marcus turned the laptop.
Nathan Reed’s emergency contact was listed.
Not a spouse.
Not a parent.
One name.
**William Sterling.**
Alexander felt the air leave his lungs.
Then Marcus noticed the final line.
“Sir…”
“What?”
“Nathan’s access badge was used tonight.”
“Where?”
Marcus stared at the location.
“Sterling Global Genetic Archive.”
Alexander’s expression hardened.
“What is stored there?”
Marcus looked at Chloe.
“Every confidential genetic project the company has conducted for the last thirty years.”
Chloe’s voice became quiet.
“Janus?”
“No idea.”
Then an alarm appeared across Marcus’s screen.
**SECURITY BREACH — GENETIC ARCHIVE.**
A second notification followed.
**ARCHIVE PURGE INITIATED.**
Alexander leaned forward.
“Can you stop it?”
Marcus typed rapidly.
“No.”
“How long?”
A countdown appeared.
**00:09:58**
Ten minutes.
Julian stared at the screen.
“Someone is destroying the evidence.”
Alexander looked at the photograph of Nathan.
“No.”
Chloe turned toward him.
“What?”
Alexander pointed at the access record.
“Nathan didn’t go there to destroy it.”
“How do you know?”
“Because he accessed one file before initiating the purge.”
Marcus opened the activity log.
A single folder had been copied to an external device.
Its name appeared on screen.
**PROJECT JANUS — STERLING/SINCLAIR SUCCESSION PROTOCOL**
Chloe stared at the words.
Then Marcus’s phone rang.
Sterling Global internal line.
He answered.
No one spoke.
Instead, a video feed appeared.
Nathan Reed stood inside the Genetic Archive.
Blood covered one side of his face.
Behind him, smoke was beginning to fill the room.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Alexander Sterling.”
Alexander leaned toward the phone.
“Nathan.”
“If you’re seeing this, William knows you found Charlotte.”
Chloe moved into view.
Nathan saw her.
His expression collapsed.
For several seconds, he simply stared.
“Charlotte?”
Chloe’s eyes filled with tears.
“Nathan?”
He stepped closer to the camera.
“You found her.”
Alexander interrupted.
“What is Janus?”
Nathan looked at him.
Then at Chloe.
“You still think this is about inheritance.”
“What is it about?”
Nathan swallowed.
“Selection.”
The word chilled the vehicle.
“Selection of what?” Chloe asked.
Nathan looked directly at her.
“Us.”
The archive alarm screamed behind him.
Alexander’s voice hardened.
“Nathan, get out.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
Nathan turned the camera.
The archive door had been electronically sealed.
Smoke thickened.
Someone had trapped him inside.
Chloe covered her mouth.
“Nathan!”
He looked back at her.
For the first time, he smiled.
It was strangely sad.
“I always wondered what you looked like.”
Chloe began crying.
“We’re coming.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Charlotte, listen.”
The countdown reached seven minutes.
Nathan held up a small black drive.
“I have Janus.”
Alexander stared at it.
“Then protect it.”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
He looked directly into the camera.
“I’m going to send it to the only person William Sterling cannot control.”
Alexander expected Nathan to say Chloe.
Instead, Nathan said:
“Julian.”
Everyone in the SUV turned toward him.
Julian stared at the phone.
“What?”
Nathan’s expression became cold.
“Because Julian already knows what Janus is.”
Silence.
Alexander slowly turned toward his brother.
Chloe did the same.
Marcus stopped typing.
Even Richard, barely conscious, opened his eyes.
Julian’s face had lost all color.
Alexander spoke quietly.
“Is that true?”
Julian did not answer.
“Julian.”
Nothing.
Then Nathan said the words that changed everything.
“Ask him why he really came for the blue box.”
Alexander looked at Julian.
The realization arrived piece by piece.
The timing.
The gun.
Thomas Vale.
Julian knowing where they would be.
Julian knowing about Chloe.
Alexander’s voice became dangerously calm.
“You weren’t set up.”
Julian looked at him.
“You knew the box would be here.”
Still no answer.
Chloe backed away from Julian.
Nathan’s voice came through the phone one final time.
“Don’t trust him, Charlotte.”
The connection suddenly died.
Marcus looked at his laptop.
Nathan had transmitted the file.
A notification appeared.
**PROJECT JANUS TRANSFER COMPLETE.**
Recipient:
**JULIAN
