Chapter 13 - The Name Daniel Deleted

The warning on the terminal finished loading before my finger reached **NO**.

**WARNING: CANCELLATION WILL PERMANENTLY DELETE DANIEL HART'S SUCCESSION MODIFICATIONS.**

Beneath it, another line appeared.

**ALL PROTECTED BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS WILL REVERT TO THE ORIGINAL 1928 TRUST.**

I stopped.

Outside the core room, people were shouting.

A gun fired.

Someone screamed.

The verification counter remained frozen at ninety-eight percent.

I had seconds.

Maybe less.

“Ava!”

Elena.

I turned.

She stood beyond the glass door with blood running from a cut above her eyebrow.

Victoria had disappeared from my view.

Marcus was fighting one of Elena's guards.

Claire was dragging Ryan's chair behind a concrete pillar.

Rachel knelt beside Dr. Voss.

Elena pressed both hands against the glass.

“Do not cancel it!”

“Why?”

“Because the original trust is worse.”

“How?”

“Daniel changed it for you.”

“For me?”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me what he changed.”

“There isn't time.”

I laughed.

Of course.

There was never time for truth.

Only obedience.

I looked back at the screen.

**YES**

**NO**

Then a third option appeared.

**VIEW MODIFICATIONS**

I pressed it.

Elena's face changed.

“Ava—”

“No.”

The screen opened a list.

**MODIFICATION 1: MORAL ELIGIBILITY CLAUSE**

The rule that excluded beneficiaries convicted of violence, coercion, fraud or exploitation.

Ryan.

Possibly Victoria.

Possibly half the people in the building.

**MODIFICATION 2: DUAL-BENEFICIARY CONTROL**

Claire and me.

**MODIFICATION 3: TRUSTEE LIMITATION**

I stopped.

“Elena.”

She said nothing.

I opened it.

**THE TRUSTEE SHALL HOLD CUSTODIAL AUTHORITY ONLY. THE TRUSTEE MAY NOT OVERRIDE A VERIFIED BENEFICIARY AFTER ACTIVATION.**

That explained her fear.

Once verification completed, Elena lost power.

Not everything.

But enough.

“You weren't trying to protect the trust.”

“I was.”

“You were trying to keep control.”

“No.”

“Then why didn't you tell me this?”

“Because you weren't ready.”

There it was again.

Another person deciding when I was ready to own my own life.

I opened the next modification.

**MODIFICATION 4: DISCLOSURE REQUIREMENT**

**ALL IDENTITY, ADOPTION, MEDICAL, FINANCIAL AND CRIMINAL ARCHIVES SHALL BECOME ACCESSIBLE TO VERIFIED BENEFICIARIES UPON ACTIVATION.**

Claire appeared behind Elena.

Her face changed when she read it.

“The ledger.”

“Everything,” I said.

Daniel had not intended to destroy the truth.

He had intended to transfer it.

I opened the final modification.

**MODIFICATION 5: AVA PROTOCOL**

My heart stopped.

Not beneficiary.

Not Hart.

Ava.

I selected it.

A password request appeared.

**ENTER THE WORD DANIEL USED FOR HIS DAUGHTER.**

My eyes burned.

A memory surfaced.

My father and me beside the lake.

I was seven.

I had fallen from the dock trying to rescue an injured duck.

He pulled me out of the water.

I expected him to be angry.

Instead, he wrapped me in his jacket and laughed.

*You impossible little compass.*

“Compass.”

The terminal unlocked.

A video appeared.

Daniel Hart filled the screen.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Alive.

Recorded three years ago.

Around the time of my wedding.

I forgot the chaos outside.

Forgot the guns.

Forgot the registry.

“Dad.”

His recorded eyes looked directly into the camera.

**Ava, if you're watching this, then I failed to reach you before the trust activated.**

My hand covered my mouth.

**First, I am sorry.**

I began crying.

Not elegantly.

Not quietly.

**I told myself that every lie was temporary. That one day I would explain everything when it became safe.**

He smiled sadly.

**The problem with waiting for safety is that fear eventually becomes the architect of your life.**

Behind me, the fighting stopped.

People were listening.

Even Elena.

**You are going to discover conflicting records about your birth. Some will say Rachel is your mother. Some will identify Marcus as your father. Others will connect you to Victoria, Julian, or children who died before you were old enough to remember them.**

I leaned toward the screen.

He knew.

**Most of those records were created deliberately.**

My pulse accelerated.

**Including the genetic profile stored under your name.**

Amelia had told the truth.

The registry wasn't reading me.

It was reading Daniel's uploaded data.

**I created the false profile.**

Marcus swore softly behind me.

Daniel continued.

**I did it because the Continuity Trust was searching for you.**

For me.

Not Claire.

Not Ryan.

Me.

**Not because you were a Hart heir.**

My chest tightened.

**Because you were evidence.**

The room became silent.

I wiped my face.

“Evidence of what?”

As though he could hear me, my father continued.

**You were not born at the Hart Women's Clinic.**

Everything stopped.

Rachel stared at the screen.

Marcus whispered, “Then the profile…”

False.

All of it.

**You were brought there eleven months later.**

Eleven months.

Not born there.

Brought there.

**Rebecca Shaw carried you into my office on a rainy Thursday afternoon. You were sick, underweight and wearing a plastic hospital bracelet with no name.**

Elena covered her mouth.

She had never known.

**Rebecca told me you had been removed from a private pediatric research program operated through companies controlled by the Continuity Trust.**

My stomach turned.

Research program.

Children.

**The program used infants whose identities had already been altered through the adoption network.**

Claire whispered, “Oh my God.”

**Those children were medically invisible. If something happened to them, no parent could ask questions because, on paper, many had never existed.**

I felt nauseated.

Was that me?

**Rebecca rescued three children.**

Three.

**Two died within weeks.**

I closed my eyes.

**You survived.**

My knees weakened.

Daniel smiled on the screen.

**You did more than survive. You screamed at me for forty-five uninterrupted minutes the first time I held you.**

A broken laugh escaped me.

That sounded believable.

**Rebecca begged me to hide you. Evelyn agreed.**

I looked at my mother.

She was crying.

**We gave you a name that belonged to a child the trust believed had already died. Ava Vale.**

Rachel collapsed into a chair.

Her dead daughter.

They had used the identity.

That was why my medical profile matched Marcus and Rachel.

Not because their blood was mine.

Because Daniel deliberately attached their dead daughter's DNA record to me.

**Later, when the danger increased, we changed the surname to Hart and altered the birth date.**

December seventeenth.

My false birthday.

**The trust stopped searching.**

I whispered, “Who am I?”

Daniel's face changed.

**I never discovered your original name.**

The answer hurt more than I expected.

No secret princess.

No lost heir.

No elegant explanation.

Just a child without records.

**But I discovered where you came from.**

I leaned closer.

**And that is why I had to disappear.**

The video paused.

A file appeared.

**PROJECT EVE**

My mother gasped.

“Eve?”

Not Evelyn.

EVE.

An acronym.

I opened it.

A list of children appeared.

Numbers instead of names.

Subjects.

Dates.

Procedures.

Most entries were marked:

**DECEASED**

Others:

**TRANSFERRED**

Three:

**UNRECOVERED**

One:

**SUBJECT E-17 — RECOVERED BY R. SHAW**

My age matched.

Me.

Claire turned away.

Marcus looked sick.

Ryan stared at the screen from behind the pillar.

Even Victoria had reappeared near the registry chamber.

Her face had lost all color.

“You knew about this,” I said.

She shook her head.

“Not that.”

“You were part of the network.”

“Adoptions.”

“Stolen children.”

“Yes.”

The admission came quietly.

“But not experiments.”

I almost didn't believe her.

Then I saw her face.

She was horrified.

There were depths even Victoria had apparently never reached.

Daniel's video resumed.

**Project EVE did not belong to Victoria.**

Victoria closed her eyes.

**It did not belong to Rachel.**

Rachel looked up.

**It was not created by Julian.**

A shadow crossed Julian's reputation without clearing him of anything else.

**Project EVE was created by the original trustee structure.**

I looked toward Elena.

She shook her head.

“I didn't know.”

Daniel continued.

**The research began decades before Elena became trustee. By the time Alexander selected her, most of it had been hidden even from the trustee.**

Elena stared at the screen.

For once, she looked genuinely blindsided.

**Someone inside the Continuity Trust preserved the program after Alexander attempted to terminate it.**

A list of initials appeared.

Doctors.

Administrators.

Attorneys.

One remained highlighted.

**R.S.**

Elena whispered, “Rebecca Shaw?”

No.

That didn't make sense.

Rebecca had rescued me.

Daniel answered.

**R.S. does not refer to Rebecca Shaw.**

The initials expanded.

**REGINALD SHAW**

Elena stopped breathing.

“My father.”

Her voice was barely audible.

Daniel continued.

**Reginald Shaw served as deputy trustee under Alexander Hart.**

Elena backed into the wall.

“No.”

**When Alexander discovered Project EVE, Reginald ordered him confined at St. Augustine.**

Marcus stared at Elena.

“Your father imprisoned mine.”

She shook her head.

“I didn't know.”

**Reginald later selected Elena as trustee, using forged instructions attributed to Alexander.**

Elena's gun lowered completely.

Everything she believed about her authority had just collapsed.

**Elena, if you are watching this, I am sorry.**

She began crying.

**Your father used you.**

The video ended.

For several seconds, nothing moved.

Then the registry resumed automatically.

**99%.**

Adam ran to the terminal.

“We have maybe sixty seconds.”

“What happens if it finishes?”

Elena stared at the screen.

“I don't know anymore.”

That was the first honest answer she had given me all day.

The core terminal displayed the choice again.

**CONTINUE VERIFICATION**

**CANCEL AND REVERT**

I looked at Claire.

“If we continue, we get access to the archives.”

“And maybe activate the purge.”

“If we cancel, the original trust returns.”

“With whoever controls it.”

“Reginald?”

Elena shook her head.

“My father died twelve years ago.”

Marcus almost laughed.

“Are you certain?”

Elena looked at him.

This family had destroyed the usefulness of that question.

The registry chimed.

**99.4%.**

Then a new message appeared.

**EXTERNAL TRUSTEE OVERRIDE REQUEST RECEIVED**

Elena stared.

“I didn't send that.”

“Who did?”

The screen displayed an authorization.

**R.S.**

Elena whispered, “No.”

A second line loaded.

**PRIMARY TRUSTEE CREDENTIALS ACCEPTED.**

Her face went white.

“That is impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because those credentials belonged to my father.”

The core-room door slammed shut.

Steel locks engaged.

Emergency shutters dropped across the archive exits.

The registry changed.

**CONTINUITY PROTOCOL AUTHORIZED**

**ARCHIVE PURGE: 10:00**

Ten minutes.

A countdown began.

Victoria ran toward the exit.

Locked.

Marcus struck the door.

Nothing.

Rachel looked toward the ventilation system.

“No airflow.”

Smoke would kill us before fire.

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

**DO NOT CANCEL THE VERIFICATION.**

Another.

**DANIEL BUILT A BACK DOOR FOR YOU.**

Then:

**COMPASS.**

I stared at the word.

The same password.

Whoever was messaging me knew Daniel's private name for me.

I typed **COMPASS** into the terminal.

A hidden menu appeared.

**DANIEL HART EMERGENCY OVERRIDE**

Two options.

**RELEASE ARCHIVES**

**RELEASE SUBJECT E-17 RECORD**

My record.

My real identity.

I selected it.

A file opened.

For the first time, I saw the record that existed before Daniel renamed me.

**PROJECT EVE**

**SUBJECT E-17**

**SEX: FEMALE**

**APPROXIMATE DOB: UNKNOWN**

**BIOLOGICAL MOTHER: CONFIRMED**

My hands began shaking.

There was a name.

Not Rachel.

Not Victoria.

Not Evelyn.

I opened the field.

The woman listed as my biological mother was:

**REBECCA SHAW**

I stopped breathing.

Elena screamed.

“No.”

I turned toward her.

Rebecca.

The nurse who rescued me.

The woman Elena called her sister.

My biological mother.

But beneath Rebecca's name was another field.

**PATERNAL IDENTITY: CLASSIFIED**

I selected it.

**ACCESS REQUIRES PRIMARY TRUSTEE AUTHORIZATION.**

The countdown reached:

**08:41**

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man spoke.

Old.

Weak.

But unmistakably amused.

“Ava.”

Not Julian's imitation.

A different voice.

Elena heard it.

Every bit of color left her face.

“Dad?”

The man laughed softly.

Reginald Shaw.

Supposedly dead for twelve years.

“Hello, Elena.”

She nearly dropped her gun.

I gripped the phone.

“You activated the purge.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To correct Daniel's mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“Letting you live.”

My blood turned cold.

“Why are you afraid of me?”

“I am not afraid of you.”

“Then why spend twenty-eight years hiding who I am?”

Silence.

I looked at the classified paternal field.

Then understood.

“You're protecting my father.”

Reginald laughed.

“No, child.”

The countdown continued.

**08:03**

“I'm protecting the world from what your father left behind.”

“Who is he?”

“You've met him.”

My heart pounded.

“Who?”

Reginald's voice softened.

“Ask Rebecca.”

“She was shot.”

“No.”

Again.

Another performance.

Another false death.

“Where is she?”

“Closer than you think.”

A sound came from behind the archive wall.

Three knocks.

Everyone turned.

Three more.

A hidden panel beside the specimen shelves moved.

Rebecca Shaw stumbled through.

Blood covered her shirt, but she was alive.

Elena ran toward her.

“Rebecca!”

Rebecca ignored her.

She looked only at me.

Her daughter.

For the first time, I understood the expression on her face.

Not duty.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Love.

“Mom?”

The word escaped before I could stop it.

Rebecca began crying.

Then she crossed the room and pulled me into her arms.

For one second, the trust disappeared.

The guns disappeared.

The countdown disappeared.

I was simply being held by the woman who had given birth to me.

Then she whispered into my ear:

“You cannot let them learn who your father is.”

I pulled back.

“Why?”

The countdown reached:

**07:21**

Rebecca looked toward Elena.

Then Marcus.

Then Rachel.

Then Victoria.

Everyone waiting.

Everyone listening.

Finally she said:

“Because your father isn't part of the Hart family.”

“Then who is he?”

Rebecca's face filled with terror.

“He created Project EVE.”

The room went silent.

I stepped backward.

“No.”

“He didn't know I was pregnant when it began.”

“Who?”

Tears ran down Rebecca's face.

“Julian.”

My stomach dropped.

Julian Cross.

Again.

Rebecca grabbed my hands.

“But Julian Cross isn't his real name.”

No one moved.

“What is it?”

Rebecca looked toward the terminal.

The countdown continued.

**06:58**

Then she said:

“His real name is Alexander Hart.”

Marcus stopped breathing.

“My father?”

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.”

Marcus stared.

“But Voss said—”

“Voss was lied to.”

“Then who is Marcus's father?”

Rebecca swallowed.

“Daniel.”

The room erupted.

Marcus staggered backward.

Rachel shouted something.

Elena dropped into a chair.

Claire stared at me.

Ryan closed his eyes.

Every branch of the family tree shifted again.

But I heard only one thing.

Alexander Hart.

Julian Cross.

My biological father.

The man with Daniel's voice.

The man who had hunted Rebecca.

The man standing at the center of every secret.

Then Rebecca delivered the final truth.

“Alexander didn't disappear after Marcus was born.”

She looked directly at me.

“He became Julian Cross.”

And from somewhere in the locked clinic, my father's voice came over the speaker system.

Not Daniel's.

Julian's.

Alexander's.

“Now that everyone knows who I am…”

The countdown froze at six minutes and forty-one seconds.

“…we can finally discuss which of my children gets to leave alive.”
