# Chapter 15 - The House That Remembered Everything

The first scream came from a room that had been empty for fifteen years.

Victoria Vance heard it through the speakers mounted beside the gates of Whitmore House.

It was a child's scream.

High-pitched. Terrified. Desperate.

And somehow, she recognized it.

Not because she remembered the voice.

But because something deep inside her reacted before her mind could understand.

She staggered backward.

Detective Elena Brooks caught her arm.

"Victoria?"

The scream stopped.

A mechanical voice followed.

FINAL MEMORY RECONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE ACTIVATED.

SUBJECT ZERO RESPONSE MONITORING COMMENCED.

Victoria stared toward the mansion.

"What is that?"

Elena raised her radio.

"Control, report."

Static crackled.

Then an officer answered.

"Detective, the building's internal security system has activated. Doors are locking automatically. We're attempting to establish access."

"Any injuries?"

"Unknown."

Victoria looked toward the upper windows.

For a moment, she thought she saw a small figure standing behind the glass.

A little girl.

Dark curls.

A pale yellow dress.

Then the figure disappeared.

Victoria blinked.

"Elena..."

The detective turned.

"I saw her."

"Who?"

"My daughter."

Elena followed her gaze.

The window was empty.

Victoria's hands began trembling.

"She was standing there."

Elena studied the building.

"Victoria, the system may be playing recordings or projections. We don't know what equipment is inside."

Victoria barely heard her.

Because another sound emerged from the speakers.

A woman's voice.

Her own voice.

But younger.

Much younger.

Please don't take her.

Victoria stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

She's my baby. Please.

Then a man's voice answered.

Victoria, you need to calm down.

Charles.

Victoria recognized him immediately.

Her stomach twisted.

Give her back!

The younger Victoria screamed.

Then the recording ended.

A terrible silence followed.

Victoria pressed both hands against her mouth.

For fifteen years, she had believed her first pregnancy occurred nine years earlier.

Now she was hearing herself beg for a daughter she had forgotten.

And somewhere inside Whitmore House, the people responsible were listening too.

In Edward Whitmore's study, Emily stood frozen beneath the flashing red lights.

Sophia was pulling desperately at the locked door.

The woman in the green coat watched the ceiling with unsettling calm.

Edward sat in his wheelchair, his face drained of color.

"Shut it down," he whispered.

The woman turned toward him.

"No."

"Elizabeth, listen to me."

She smiled.

"Which Elizabeth?"

Edward flinched.

Emily stepped closer.

"What is this system?"

He looked at her.

"An old research installation."

"What does it do?"

Edward hesitated.

The mechanical voice spoke again.

SUBJECT E-01 CONFIRMED.

A red light illuminated above Emily.

She looked up.

Then another light flashed.

SUBJECT E-02 CONFIRMED.

Sophia stepped backward.

A third indicator activated.

SUBJECT E-03 CONFIRMED.

The woman in green lifted her chin.

Emily stared at her.

"You knew this would happen."

The woman said nothing.

Sophia turned sharply.

"You brought us here."

"Yes."

"Why?"

The woman's expression hardened.

"Because Edward was never going to tell us the truth voluntarily."

Emily felt anger rise.

"So you trapped us?"

"I activated a system that contains the original records."

Edward shook his head.

"You don't understand. It was never designed to be used this way."

The woman looked toward him.

"Neither were we."

The words struck him.

For a moment, he had no answer.

Then a large screen descended from the ceiling.

The lights dimmed.

A video began playing.

A young Victoria Whitmore appeared on the screen.

She was seventeen.

Her dark hair hung loosely around her shoulders.

She sat in a hospital bed, holding a newborn baby.

She was smiling.

Not the polished smile Victoria wore at charity events.

A genuine smile.

Filled with exhausted, overwhelming love.

"Hello, Elizabeth," she whispered.

The baby moved slightly.

Victoria kissed her forehead.

"You're my beautiful girl."

Emily felt her chest tighten.

Sophia covered her mouth.

The woman in green stared without blinking.

On the screen, Charles entered the room.

He looked much younger.

He carried a bouquet of white roses.

Victoria smiled at him.

"Look at her."

Charles approached.

"She's perfect."

He touched the baby's cheek.

Then Victoria said something that made Edward close his eyes.

"Promise me you'll never let my father take her."

Charles hesitated.

The younger Victoria looked up.

"Charles?"

He smiled.

"I promise."

The recording continued.

And the man who had spent fifteen years hiding the truth watched himself make a promise he would soon betray.

At the Vance estate, Charles received an emergency alert from Whitmore House.

He stared at the screen.

PROJECT EVE — PHASE FOUR ACTIVE.

His face turned white.

Catherine Bell noticed immediately.

"What happened?"

Charles stood.

"Edward's system has been activated."

"What system?"

"The original memory reconstruction installation."

Catherine frowned.

"What does it do?"

Charles grabbed his coat.

"Plays back archived recordings, triggers controlled environmental cues, and monitors responses."

Catherine stared at him.

"Environmental cues?"

"Sounds. Images. Familiar objects."

"You're describing psychological manipulation."

Charles stopped.

"Yes."

She felt sick.

"And Victoria is there?"

"Outside."

Catherine stepped closer.

"Then call her."

Charles shook his head.

"The system is already running."

"Then stop it."

"I can't from here."

Catherine stared at him.

"Why not?"

"Edward removed my access years ago."

She watched his face.

For the first time, Charles looked less like a powerful billionaire and more like a man watching a machine he had helped build turn against him.

Catherine reached for her phone.

"I'm calling the police."

Charles looked at her.

"They're already there."

"Then tell them everything."

He hesitated.

Catherine's expression hardened.

"Charles."

He looked away.

She stepped closer.

"If you still care about Thomas, Victoria, or any of those children, stop protecting yourself."

Charles closed his eyes.

Then he whispered:

"There's something you need to know."

Catherine stared at him.

"What?"

"The system wasn't designed simply to recover memories."

Her stomach tightened.

"What was it designed to do?"

Charles looked toward the emergency alert.

"To test whether a person could be made to accept a false history as their own."

Catherine felt a chill.

"And Victoria?"

He nodded.

"She was the primary subject."

Catherine stepped backward.

"Oh, God."

Charles continued.

"Edward believed that if he could replace a traumatic memory with a constructed one, he could change how the person responded to future events."

"And the children?"

"They were used to test attachment and identity."

Catherine stared at him.

"Then all those memories Sophia and the others share..."

Charles looked away.

"Some were deliberately introduced."

Catherine's voice trembled.

"How many?"

He did not answer.

She stepped closer.

"Charles, how many of their memories are real?"

He looked directly at her.

"That's what the final sequence was supposed to determine."

Inside the study, the video changed.

Victoria was no longer smiling.

She lay unconscious in a hospital bed.

A monitor beeped beside her.

Edward stood near the doorway, speaking to Charles.

"She knows too much."

Charles looked horrified.

"She's your daughter."

"I know."

"Then stop this."

Edward's younger face hardened.

"If she exposes the program, everything we've built will collapse."

Charles shook his head.

"She just gave birth."

"Which makes the timing unfortunate."

Emily stared at the screen.

Sophia began crying.

The woman in green clenched her fists.

On the recording, Charles stepped toward Edward.

"You promised she would be safe."

"She will be."

"Then why are you preparing another procedure?"

Edward looked toward the unconscious Victoria.

"Because she remembers."

The video cut to black.

Emily turned toward the old man.

"You did this to your own daughter."

Edward lowered his eyes.

"I believed I was helping her."

Sophia laughed through her tears.

"You keep saying that."

Emily stepped closer.

"You made her forget her child."

Edward's hands trembled.

"Yes."

"And then you used us."

He closed his eyes.

"Yes."

The admission shocked everyone.

For the first time, Edward had stopped defending himself.

Emily stared at him.

"Why?"

His voice broke.

"Because I couldn't admit the first procedure had failed."

The woman in green looked up sharply.

"What?"

Edward stared toward the dark screen.

"Victoria remembered Elizabeth even after the initial treatment."

Emily felt a chill.

"So you repeated it?"

He nodded.

"Several times."

Sophia covered her mouth.

Edward continued.

"Each time, the memories returned."

The woman in green stepped forward.

"And that's why you created the replacements."

Edward looked at her.

"Yes."

Emily felt sick.

He had not simply taken Victoria's daughter.

He had created an elaborate system of false identities and manipulated relationships to keep Victoria from discovering what happened.

Sophia stared at him.

"Then who am I?"

Edward closed his eyes.

"You're Sophia."

She shook her head.

"That isn't an answer."

He looked toward the screen.

"Your biological identity is recorded in the original registry."

Sophia stepped closer.

"Then show me."

Edward hesitated.

The woman in green smiled faintly.

"You can't."

Edward looked at her.

She continued.

"Because the final sequence has already begun."

A mechanical voice interrupted.

IDENTITY VERIFICATION STAGE INITIATED.

The screen illuminated.

Three names appeared.

Emily.

Sophia.

Elizabeth.

Then the names disappeared.

Replaced by three codes.

E-01.

E-02.

E-03.

Emily stared at the screen.

The system began displaying photographs.

Infants.

Children.

Teenagers.

Medical records.

Birth certificates.

And finally, three sealed genetic reports.

Sophia stepped forward.

"Open them."

Edward shook his head.

"Don't."

The woman in green pressed a button on the electronic device in her hand.

The first report opened.

SUBJECT E-01 — BIOLOGICAL MATERNAL MATCH: VICTORIA WHITMORE.

Emily stopped breathing.

Sophia looked toward her.

The woman in green remained silent.

Emily's hands began trembling.

"I'm her daughter."

Edward closed his eyes.

"Yes."

For a moment, Emily could not speak.

She thought of the years spent in locked rooms.

The nights she cried herself to sleep.

The times she asked about her parents and was told they were dead.

And somewhere above her, Victoria had been living in a beautiful mansion, unaware that her daughter was trapped beneath it.

Emily began crying.

Then the second report opened.

SUBJECT E-02 — BIOLOGICAL MATERNAL MATCH: NEGATIVE.

Sophia stared at the screen.

Her face crumpled.

"No..."

The woman in green reached toward her.

Sophia pulled away.

"Don't touch me."

She looked at Edward.

"Then who is my mother?"

He could not answer.

Sophia began sobbing.

For years, she had imagined discovering that Victoria was her mother.

Now even that hope had been taken from her.

Emily stepped toward her.

"Sophia—"

"No."

Sophia shook her head.

"Don't."

Emily stopped.

The third report opened.

SUBJECT E-03 — BIOLOGICAL MATERNAL MATCH: INCONCLUSIVE.

The woman in green stared at it.

Her expression changed.

"Inconclusive?"

Edward looked up.

She turned toward him.

"You told me I was Elizabeth."

He said nothing.

"You told me Victoria was my mother."

Edward closed his eyes.

The woman stepped closer.

"Was that another lie?"

He looked away.

She began trembling.

Then the mechanical voice spoke again.

IDENTITY VERIFICATION COMPLETE.

PROCEEDING TO FINAL DISCLOSURE.

Edward suddenly grabbed the edge of his desk.

"No!"

Emily turned.

"What?"

He looked toward the screen.

"Stop it."

The woman in green frowned.

"Why?"

Edward's voice rose.

"Because the final disclosure isn't about you!"

The room fell silent.

Sophia stared at him.

"What?"

Edward looked toward the security monitor.

Victoria stood outside the mansion.

The old man's face drained.

"It's about her."

Outside Whitmore House, Victoria heard the speakers crackle.

Then a familiar voice emerged.

Her father's voice.

Recorded fifteen years earlier.

The subject continues to demonstrate resistance to memory suppression.

A second voice answered.

Charles.

Then stop.

Edward replied.

We can't.

Why?

A pause.

Then:

Because she knows what happened to Elizabeth.

Victoria felt a chill.

The recording continued.

Charles sounded angry.

She's her mother. Of course she knows.

Edward's voice hardened.

She knows more than that.

Victoria gripped Elena's arm.

The recording crackled.

Then Edward spoke again.

She knows the original child wasn't the only infant involved.

Victoria stopped breathing.

Another baby.

Elena looked toward her.

Victoria's hands began trembling.

The recording continued.

Charles whispered:

You promised me there was only one.

Edward answered:

There was only one biological daughter.

A long silence followed.

Then Charles asked:

Then who was the other baby?

The recording abruptly stopped.

Victoria stared toward the mansion.

"What other baby?"

Elena raised her radio.

"Control, we need access to the building immediately."

An officer responded.

"Working on it, Detective. The external locks are reinforced."

Victoria barely heard them.

Because another memory was rising.

A hospital room.

Two bassinets.

One baby crying.

Another lying silent.

And her father standing between them.

She remembered reaching toward the second bassinet.

Edward had stopped her.

Not that one, Victoria.

She had looked up.

Why?

And he had answered:

Because that child isn't yours.

Victoria staggered.

Elena caught her.

"Victoria!"

She began shaking uncontrollably.

"I remember."

"What?"

"There were two babies."

Elena stared at her.

Victoria's voice broke.

"One was Elizabeth."

"And the other?"

Victoria closed her eyes.

The memory sharpened.

A tiny face.

Dark hair.

A pale blanket.

A silver identification bracelet.

She remembered reading the name.

Then the memory vanished.

Victoria gasped.

"I can't remember."

Elena held her steady.

"Don't force it."

But Victoria shook her head.

"No. I have to."

She looked toward the mansion.

The speakers crackled again.

A woman's voice began singing.

The same lullaby Noah had heard through the walls.

Victoria froze.

The voice sounded familiar.

Not Catherine.

Not Rebecca.

Not Sophia.

Her mother.

Victoria's eyes widened.

Her mother had died when she was thirteen.

Yet the recording sounded exactly like her.

Then a new voice spoke.

A little girl's voice.

Mommy?

Victoria stopped breathing.

The child continued.

Why won't you wake up?

A woman's voice answered.

Because she doesn't remember you yet.

Victoria began crying.

The recording ended.

Then the mechanical voice announced:

SUBJECT ZERO MEMORY RESPONSE DETECTED.

FINAL DISCLOSURE READY.

Inside the study, Edward Whitmore was shaking violently.

Emily stood beside him.

"Grandfather, what happens next?"

He looked toward the screen.

"The system will reveal the original records."

Sophia wiped her tears.

"Then let it."

Edward shook his head.

"You don't understand."

The woman in green stepped closer.

"Stop saying that."

Edward looked at her.

His voice broke.

"If the final records are released, Victoria will discover what happened to her mother."

Emily froze.

"Her mother?"

Edward closed his eyes.

Sophia stared at him.

"Victoria's mother died when she was thirteen."

Edward nodded.

"Yes."

The woman in green leaned forward.

"Then what happened?"

Edward looked toward the screen.

For a long moment, he remained silent.

Then he whispered:

"She discovered Project Eve."

Emily felt a chill.

"And?"

Edward's eyes filled.

"She tried to take Victoria away."

Sophia covered her mouth.

The woman in green stared at him.

"What did you do?"

Edward began crying.

"I stopped her."

Emily stepped backward.

"How?"

He could barely speak.

"I told Charles to prepare the procedure."

Sophia stared at him.

"Charles was involved even then?"

Edward nodded.

"He was working in my laboratory."

The woman in green looked horrified.

"Victoria was thirteen."

Edward closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Emily's voice trembled.

"What happened to her mother?"

Edward looked toward the floor.

Then whispered:

"She didn't die in the accident."

The room went silent.

Sophia stared at him.

"What accident?"

Edward looked up.

His face was wet with tears.

"The one I arranged."

At 11:29 a.m., Charles received a message from Whitmore House.

It contained a single sentence.

THE ORIGINAL MATERNAL RECORD HAS BEEN RELEASED.

Charles stared at the screen.

His hands began trembling.

Catherine noticed.

"What happened?"

He did not answer.

She stepped closer.

"Charles."

He looked toward her.

His face had turned white.

"Edward's system is releasing everything."

Catherine frowned.

"Then the truth will finally come out."

Charles shook his head.

"You don't understand."

She stared at him.

"What now?"

He swallowed.

"Victoria's mother."

Catherine felt a chill.

"What about her?"

Charles looked toward the window.

"Edward told Victoria she died in a car accident."

"Yes."

He closed his eyes.

"She didn't."

Catherine stared at him.

"Then how did she die?"

Charles hesitated.

Then whispered:

"She was taken to Whitmore House."

Catherine's stomach tightened.

"Alive?"

He nodded.

"What happened to her?"

Charles looked away.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he spoke.

"Edward used her in the earliest phase of Project Eve."

Catherine felt sick.

"And?"

Charles's voice broke.

"She survived."

Catherine stopped breathing.

"What?"

Charles looked directly at her.

"Victoria's mother never died."

A terrible silence followed.

Then Catherine whispered:

"Where is she?"

Charles looked toward the emergency alert on his computer.

His expression became one of pure dread.

"That's what Edward has been hiding."

At Whitmore House, the final video began playing.

A hospital room appeared.

An older woman lay in bed.

Her dark hair was streaked with gray.

Her face was pale.

But her eyes were open.

Emily stared at the screen.

Sophia covered her mouth.

The woman in green stepped backward.

Edward began crying.

On the recording, a nurse approached the bed.

"Mrs. Whitmore?"

The woman turned her head.

"Yes?"

"Your daughter is coming."

The woman smiled weakly.

"Victoria?"

The nurse nodded.

"Yes."

Tears filled the woman's eyes.

"After all these years?"

The nurse said nothing.

The woman reached toward the bedside table.

There was a photograph.

Victoria as a little girl.

The woman touched it gently.

Then whispered:

"My baby."

The video ended.

Emily turned toward Edward.

"Who is she?"

He could barely speak.

Sophia stepped closer.

"Professor?"
