Chapter 8 - The Price of a Son

"That child survived."

Samuel Mercer's confession echoed through the abandoned foundry, leaving Adrian Hale staring at the man who had spent decades guarding his family's darkest secrets.

Outside, police sirens wailed beneath the gray afternoon sky. Officers were escorting Charles Hale toward an armored vehicle, while investigators moved through the building collecting evidence of the kidnapping.

But Adrian barely noticed them.

He was holding Ethan against his chest, and the little boy's fingers were wrapped tightly around his jacket.

"Whose child?" Adrian demanded.

Samuel's eyes remained fixed on the concrete floor.

"Daniel's."

"You said Daniel died on Briar Bridge."

"He did."

"And now you're telling me he had another child?"

Samuel nodded.

"A daughter."

Adrian felt a painful tightening in his chest.

"A daughter?"

"Yes."

"Where is she?"

Samuel hesitated.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Samuel, my wife is fighting for her life. My son has just escaped a kidnapping. Charles has been arrested after spending seven years destroying our family. If there's something else I need to know, you tell me now."

Samuel lifted his head.

"Her name was Eleanor."

Adrian went still.

"Eleanor Price?"

The same woman who had helped Samuel recover the fertility records.

Samuel looked startled.

"You know her?"

"Marcus mentioned her name. She was helping you investigate Charles."

Samuel nodded slowly.

"Eleanor was raised believing she was the daughter of Margaret's childhood friend. She never knew the truth about her parents until recently."

Adrian struggled to understand.

"How old is she?"

"In her late sixties."

Adrian stared at him.

"Then she couldn't have been the unborn child from an aircraft incident twenty-six years ago."

Samuel's expression changed.

For the first time, he appeared genuinely confused.

"That's not what I meant."

Adrian's voice sharpened.

"Then explain yourself."

Samuel rubbed his forehead.

"Eleanor is the woman who preserved Daniel's records. She isn't his daughter. I was thinking of someone connected to her investigation."

Adrian felt a flash of anger.

"You just told me her name was Eleanor."

"I made a mistake."

"People don't confuse the identities of children they've spent decades hiding!"

Samuel looked toward Charles, who was standing beside the police vehicle in the distance.

Then he whispered, "You're right."

Adrian waited.

Samuel took a shaky breath.

"The child's name is Victoria Mercer."

"Where is Victoria?"

"I don't know anymore."

"What do you mean?"

"Margaret arranged for her to be raised under another identity. She believed Charles would kill her if he discovered she existed."

Adrian looked down at Ethan.

The boy was exhausted, frightened, and struggling to follow the conversation.

Adrian realized he was making the same mistake Charles had made for decades.

He was allowing the family's secrets to overshadow the child standing directly in front of him.

He knelt beside Ethan.

"Buddy, Marcus is going to take you to the hospital."

Ethan immediately shook his head.

"No."

"Your mom is there."

The boy's expression changed.

"Is she okay?"

"She's very sick. The doctors are helping her."

"Are you coming?"

Adrian brushed Ethan's hair away from his forehead.

"Yes. I'm coming with you."

Ethan looked relieved.

Then he glanced toward Samuel.

"Is he coming too?"

Adrian hesitated.

Samuel watched them silently.

"I don't know yet," Adrian answered.

Ethan considered that.

Then he whispered, "He helped me."

Adrian looked up sharply.

"What?"

"When Grandpa locked me in the room, Mr. Samuel talked to me through the wall."

Samuel lowered his gaze.

"He told me not to be scared," Ethan continued. "He said my dad was coming."

Adrian stared at his former chauffeur.

For seven years, Samuel had concealed truths that might have reunited Adrian's family.

Yet today, he had risked his life to help Ethan escape.

Both facts could be true.

And Adrian wasn't ready to decide what forgiveness might eventually mean.

"Get in the car, Ethan," he said gently.

The boy hugged him once more before allowing Marcus to guide him outside.

Adrian turned back toward Samuel.

"You're coming with us."

Samuel shook his head.

"I need to speak with the police."

"You will. But first, you're going to tell me everything about Victoria."

At St. Vincent Medical Center, the surgeons were preparing Olivia for emergency heart surgery.

Adrian arrived with Ethan just as the medical team began moving her toward the operating theater.

The boy ran down the corridor.

"Mom!"

A nurse stopped the gurney.

Olivia opened her eyes weakly.

For a moment, she seemed unable to believe what she was seeing.

Then she raised one trembling hand.

"Ethan?"

The child rushed toward her.

"I'm here, Mom!"

She touched his cheek.

Tears slipped down her temples.

"Oh, sweetheart."

Ethan began crying.

"I thought you were going to leave me."

Olivia's face crumpled.

"Never because I want to."

Adrian stood a few feet away, his throat tight with emotion.

Olivia looked past Ethan.

Her eyes found Adrian.

"You brought him back."

He nodded.

"He's safe."

She reached toward him.

Adrian stepped closer and took her hand.

For seven years, he had believed he would never feel her fingers close around his again.

Now, as she lay on the edge of a dangerous operation, he realized how fragile their reunion remained.

"Adrian," she whispered.

"I'm here."

"I'm scared."

He leaned closer.

"I know."

She looked at Ethan.

"Take care of him."

Adrian felt tears burning behind his eyes.

"We both will. Together."

Olivia gave the faintest smile.

Then her expression became serious.

"There's something about Margaret."

Adrian glanced toward the surgical team.

"Olivia, we can talk afterward."

"No."

Her grip tightened.

"You need to know."

Dr. Morgan approached.

"Mrs. Hale, we have to proceed."

Olivia looked desperately at Adrian.

"Margaret didn't tell me everything. But before she disappeared, she said Charles wasn't the only one who wanted Henry's trust."

Adrian frowned.

"Who else?"

Olivia's voice weakened.

"She said there was another heir."

Adrian went still.

"Victoria?"

Olivia's eyes widened.

"You know?"

Before he could answer, the surgical team began moving the gurney.

Olivia released his hand.

"Find her," she whispered.

Then the doors closed.

Ethan stood beside Adrian, watching the red indicator above the operating theater illuminate.

"Is Mom going to wake up?"

Adrian crouched and pulled the boy close.

"I hope so."

Ethan rested his head against Adrian's shoulder.

"Can we wait together?"

Adrian held him tightly.

"Of course."

Three hours later, Marcus Reed entered the family waiting room carrying a sealed folder.

Adrian had remained beside Ethan the entire time.

The child had finally fallen asleep beneath a blanket.

Marcus lowered his voice.

"We've recovered several documents from Charles's private office at the foundry."

Adrian looked up.

"Anything useful?"

"Financial records, correspondence, and a list of people receiving payments through offshore accounts."

"Samuel?"

"His name appears repeatedly."

Adrian sighed.

"That doesn't surprise me."

"But there's another name."

Marcus opened the folder.

"Victoria Mercer."

Adrian straightened.

"Where?"

"On a trust distribution record created twenty-five years ago."

Marcus placed the document on the table.

The payments had begun shortly after Margaret's supposed death.

They continued annually for decades.

The recipient was listed only as V. Mercer.

The amounts were substantial.

Adrian examined the final entry.

"These payments stopped two years ago."

Marcus nodded.

"Exactly six months before Charles supposedly died."

Adrian frowned.

"Why?"

"We don't know."

"Can we trace the account?"

"We've identified the bank, but the beneficiary information was sealed."

Adrian looked at him.

"Then unseal it."

"That will require legal authorization."

"Get it."

Marcus hesitated.

"There's something else."

He removed a second document.

A photograph.

It showed a younger Charles Hale standing outside an estate house beside a teenage girl.

The girl had dark brown hair and a faint smile.

She looked remarkably similar to Margaret.

Adrian stared at the image.

"Who is she?"

Marcus turned the photograph over.

A handwritten inscription read:

Victoria, age sixteen.

Adrian felt a chill.

"If Victoria was born twenty-six years ago, this photograph would be about ten years old."

"Correct."

"Where was it taken?"

"The property appears to be the former Mercer family estate."

Adrian examined the background.

A wide stone staircase.

Tall windows.

A fountain shaped like a swan.

He recognized the house.

His grandfather had owned it decades earlier.

It had been sold after Henry's death.

Or so Adrian had believed.

"Who owns that property now?"

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

"A private holding company."

Adrian stared at him.

"Controlled by whom?"

Marcus slowly placed a third document on the table.

The registered owner was:

MARGARET HALE FAMILY TRUST.

Adrian read the name twice.

His mother had apparently controlled the estate for years.

While the world believed she was dead.

While Charles continued operating Hale Industries.

While Olivia and Ethan struggled to survive.

Adrian looked toward the sleeping child.

"How many people knew?"

Marcus didn't answer.

Adrian whispered, "How many people knew my family was alive and did nothing?"

At the metropolitan police headquarters, Charles Hale sat across from two detectives.

He had refused food.

Refused legal representation from the public defender's office.

And refused to answer questions.

Until one detective mentioned Victoria Mercer.

Charles's expression changed.

"Where did you hear that name?"

Detective Laura Bennett leaned forward.

"We're investigating financial transfers connected to her."

Charles smiled faintly.

"Then you're wasting your time."

"Why?"

"Because Victoria is dead."

The detective studied him.

"When did she die?"

Charles looked toward the mirrored wall.

"Two years ago."

"Cause of death?"

"An unfortunate accident."

"What kind?"

Charles remained silent.

Detective Bennett placed the photograph from the Mercer estate on the table.

Charles stared at the girl.

For the first time since his arrest, he appeared genuinely unsettled.

"Where did you get that?"

"From your records."

"Destroy it."

The detective raised an eyebrow.

"Excuse me?"

Charles leaned forward.

"That photograph should never have been preserved."

"Why?"

His voice became sharp.

"Because some people are safer forgotten."

Detective Bennett leaned back.

"Is that what you told Adrian about Olivia and Ethan?"

Charles's expression hardened.

"Adrian has always been too emotional."

"And Victoria?"

Charles looked away.

The detective waited.

Finally, he whispered, "Victoria was the only one who understood what Henry had done."

"What had he done?"

Charles's eyes narrowed.

"He created an inheritance structure that would eventually destroy the entire family."

"How?"

Charles looked directly at her.

"By giving control to people who never should have been born."

At 8:17 p.m., Samuel Mercer arrived at the hospital under police escort.

He had agreed to cooperate with investigators in exchange for protection.

Adrian met him inside a private conference room.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Finally, Adrian placed Victoria's photograph on the table.

"Who is she?"

Samuel stared at it.

His face changed.

"Where did you find this?"

"Charles kept it."

Samuel slowly sat down.

"Victoria."

"Is she Daniel's daughter?"

Samuel nodded.

"Yes."

"Then explain the timeline."

Samuel looked toward the window.

"Daniel was married before he met Margaret."

Adrian froze.

"What?"

"Her name was Catherine Mercer. They were separated when Daniel began working for Henry Hale."

Adrian leaned forward.

"Separated?"

"Not legally divorced."

"Then Daniel had a wife when he was involved with my mother?"

Samuel nodded reluctantly.

Adrian stood.

"Jesus Christ."

Samuel continued.

"Catherine discovered she was pregnant shortly before the aircraft incident. She had agreed to meet Margaret because she believed Margaret could help protect her."

Adrian frowned.

"Protect her from what?"

"Charles."

"Why?"

"Because Catherine knew Daniel had uncovered financial crimes inside Hale Industries."

Adrian looked at the photograph again.

"So Catherine was the pregnant woman on the plane."

Samuel nodded.

"Yes."

"And Margaret survived."

"Yes."

"What happened to Catherine?"

Samuel's face darkened.

"She died."

Adrian closed his eyes.

Another death.

Another child left behind.

"How did Victoria survive?"

Samuel hesitated.

"Catherine didn't board the aircraft."

Adrian stared at him.

"What?"

"At the last moment, she changed her mind. Margaret boarded alone."

"Then who was the second woman?"

Samuel lowered his gaze.

"A decoy."

Adrian felt anger rise.

"Another decoy? How many people did Charles use to manufacture deaths?"

Samuel shook his head.

"That one wasn't Charles's plan."

Adrian froze.

"Whose was it?"

Samuel looked directly at him.

"Margaret's."

The room fell silent.

Adrian slowly sat down.

His mother had staged her own death.

Olivia's death had been staged by Charles.

Daniel's death records had been manipulated.

And now Samuel claimed Margaret herself had arranged a second passenger on the aircraft.

"Why would she do that?"

Samuel's voice became quiet.

"Because she knew Charles intended to destroy the plane. She wanted the authorities to believe two people had died."

Adrian stared at him.

"Then what happened to the decoy?"

Samuel looked away.

"She never boarded either. The aircraft was sent up without passengers after the crew received a warning. Margaret escaped before takeoff."

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"So no one died in that crash."

Samuel nodded.

"Not in the aircraft."

Adrian rubbed his temples.

"And Victoria?"

"She was born several months later."

"Where?"

"At a private clinic."

"Who raised her?"

Samuel hesitated.

"Margaret arranged for her care."

Adrian stared at him.

"Why did Charles have photographs of her?"

Samuel's expression hardened.

"Because Charles eventually found her."

Adrian leaned forward.

"And?"

"He made her an offer."

"What offer?"

Samuel looked at Victoria's photograph.

"A share of Hale Industries in exchange for helping him challenge Henry's trust."

Adrian felt a chill.

"Did she accept?"

Samuel didn't answer.

"Samuel."

The old chauffeur closed his eyes.

"She did."

At 10:43 p.m., Adrian received news from the operating theater.

Dr. Morgan entered the waiting room, her surgical cap still covering her hair.

Adrian stood immediately.

"Olivia?"

The physician looked exhausted.

"The procedure was difficult, but we were able to replace the damaged valve."

Adrian felt his knees weaken.

"She's alive?"

"Yes."

He closed his eyes.

For the first time that day, he allowed himself to breathe.

Ethan stirred on the couch.

"Dad?"

Adrian turned.

The boy sat up.

"Is Mom okay?"

Adrian crossed the room and knelt beside him.

"The surgery is over."

Ethan stared at him.

"Did she make it?"

Adrian smiled through tears.

"She did."

The boy threw his arms around his neck.

Adrian held him tightly.

For a few beautiful seconds, the world became simple again.

His son was safe.

Olivia was alive.

They still had a chance.

But Dr. Morgan gently interrupted.

"She's critically ill, Mr. Hale. The next several days will be important. She's being transferred to the cardiac intensive care unit."

Adrian nodded.

"I understand."

The physician gave him a sympathetic smile.

"We'll keep you informed."

As she walked away, Ethan looked up.

"Can we see her?"

"When the doctors say it's okay."

The boy nodded.

Then he whispered, "Dad?"

"Yes?"

"Can we go to the park when Mom gets better?"

Adrian felt his throat tighten.

"Absolutely."

Ethan smiled.

It was the first unguarded smile Adrian had seen on his face.

And Adrian realized that no financial victory in his life had ever felt as meaningful as that small expression of hope.

At midnight, a woman stepped out of a black sedan outside the Hale family estate.

She wore a dark green coat and carried a slim leather briefcase.

Her hair was shoulder-length and dark brown.

A faint scar crossed the inside of her wrist.

She paused beneath the security lights and looked up at the mansion.

For a long time, she remained motionless.

Then she approached the gate.

The security officer stepped forward.

"Can I help you, ma'am?"

The woman smiled politely.

"I'm here to see Adrian Hale."

"Do you have an appointment?"

"No."

"Then I'm afraid—"

She opened her briefcase and withdrew a document.

The officer examined it.

His expression changed.

"Where did you get this?"

"It's mine."

He looked up.

"Ma'am, this document identifies you as a beneficiary of the Henry Hale estate."

She nodded.

"That's correct."

"What is your name?"

The woman met his eyes.

"Victoria Mercer."

The guard stared at her.

Victoria smiled faintly.

"Please tell Adrian that his sister has come home."

At St. Vincent Medical Center, Adrian's phone rang.

Marcus was calling from the estate.

"Sir, there's a woman here claiming to be Victoria Mercer."

Adrian stood.

"Victoria?"

"Yes."

"Where is she?"

"At the main gate."

Adrian looked toward Ethan, now sleeping peacefully again.

"What does she want?"

Marcus hesitated.

"She says she has documents proving Charles manipulated the inheritance."

Adrian frowned.

"Then bring her to a secure location. I'll speak with her."

"There's something else."

"What?"

Marcus lowered his voice.

"She's claiming to be your sister."

Adrian felt the room grow cold.

"My sister?"

"Yes, sir."

"Daniel's daughter?"

"That's what she says."

Adrian stared toward the dark hospital window.

Then Marcus continued.

"She also says Henry Hale left a separate inheritance specifically for her."

Adrian's heart pounded.

"What inheritance?"

Marcus paused.

"According to her documents, she owns a controlling interest in the medical research company that operated your fertility clinic."

Adrian went completely still.

The clinic.

The altered reproductive samples.

The mysterious genetic donor records.

The company Charles had secretly controlled.

Victoria had apparently been connected to it all.

Adrian whispered, "Marcus, don't let her leave."

"Understood."

"And don't let her near Olivia or Ethan."

There was a brief silence.

Then Marcus said something that made Adrian's blood turn to ice.

"Sir... she already knows Ethan's genetic profile."

Adrian gripped the phone.

"How?"

Marcus's voice became strained.

"She says she personally authorized the substitution at the fertility clinic."

Adrian felt the floor disappear beneath him.

"What?"

Marcus continued.

"She claims Charles didn't order it."

Adrian's heartbeat thundered.

"Then who did?"

A woman's voice suddenly came through the phone.

Calm.

Controlled.

Almost gentle.

"Hello, Adrian."

He froze.

Victoria.

"I've wanted to meet you for a very long time."

Adrian's voice shook.

"What did you do to my son?"

The woman was silent for a moment.

Then she whispered:

"I didn't create Ethan to destroy your family, Adrian."

A faint smile entered her voice.

"I created him to destroy Charles."
