Chapter 2: The Basement Birth Certificate

The little girl collapsed into my arms, shivering violently despite the warmth of the room.

"Sophie," I breathed, my throat closing up. Her hands were icy cold. Her oversized pink sweater smelled of dust and damp drywall. "How long have you been in there?"

She didn't answer. She only pressed her pale forehead against my shoulder, clinging to my flannel shirt as though letting go would make her dissolve into the dark.

Behind me, Main Antagonist stood frozen, her face drained of every drop of blood. Her knuckles were white against the wooden doorframe.

"Tell me the truth, Main Antagonist," I said, keeping my voice dangerously low so Lily wouldn't hear from the downstairs playroom. "Who is this child? And why is she living behind our daughter's wall?"

Main Antagonist's knees buckled. She slid down the doorframe until she was sitting on the hardwood floor, burying her face in her trembling hands. "Six months, Main Protagonist. She's been in that room for six months."

"Six months?!" The words exploded from my chest like shrapnel. "You kept a four-year-old locked in a crawlspace for half a year in my own house?!"

"I had no choice!" Main Antagonist sobbed, looking up with wild, bloodshot eyes. "If my father found out she survived the clinic... if Third Character (The Pivot) knew where she was, he would have made sure neither of us ever saw daylight again!"

My mind spun violently. Third Character (The Pivot) Whitmore. My powerful, ruthless father-in-law. The billionaire patriarch who had always treated me like an unwanted intruder in his dynasty.

"What does Third Character (The Pivot) have to do with this child?" I demanded.

Main Antagonist pointed a trembling finger toward the floorboards. "Underneath the basement floor safe. Behind the water heater. The metal lockbox with the blue seal. Look at the birth certificate, Main Protagonist. Look at who signed as her father four years ago."

Ten minutes later, with Sophie safely asleep in Lily's bed under two heavy quilts, I stood in the damp darkness of our basement. My flashlight beam cut through the dust as I pried open the rusted floor safe.

Inside lay a leather-bound hospital dossier stamped from St. Jude Medical Center, dated four years before I ever met Main Antagonist.

I flipped open the first yellowed page. My eyes locked onto the father's signature at the bottom of the certificate.

It was my signature.

My handwriting. My personal identification number. Signed on a date that my medical records claimed I had spent in a coma following a hit-and-run crash.

Suddenly, the phone in my pocket buzzed with an incoming text from an untraceable number.

I stared at the glowing screen. The message read:

"Ask your wife where your first daughter is. Before Third Character (The Pivot) puts her on the private flight tonight."
